5. • Can I allow renters to serve alcohol in my space even though I don’t
have a license?
• Can renters sell alcohol? Can I?
• What if the renter wants to host a ticketed event?
• Who is allowed to physically serve and pour the alcohol?
• How can I let people throw parties in my space without them destroying
my belongings?
What We’ll Cover
We want to answer a number of questions that we often get from Peerspace hosts
7. The first step for venues without a liquor license is determining whether or not the
event in question qualifies as a private party
Non-Licensed Venues
You’re all set! No need to
do anything else
You’ll need to get an ABC
permit
If Yes... If No...
8. To qualify as ‘private’, an event has to meet 4 criteria
Private Party Criteria Common Disqualifying Factors
1. Closed guest list
● Open to public
● Walk-ups allowed
2. Renter provides the alcohol ● Having alcohol catered in
3. All drinks are complimentary
● Cash bar
● Paid-for drink tickets
4. No admission fee, or any other fees
● Entrance fee / selling tickets
● Silent auction
Private Parties
9. If any one of those 4 criteria are not met, you’ll need to get a one-off permit
from the ABC
Type 221 Permit
● Need to be a qualifying
non-profit organization
(501-C3)
● Typically takes 30+ days notice
to get approved if it’s your first
time, 10+ days after that
Type 218 Permit
● Can only be obtained by holders
of an Alcohol Caterer’s Permit
(Type 58)
● Ideally the ABC branches want
10+ business days notice, but
can do rush delivery with 3+
days if you deliver in-person
Permit Options
11. 1) Primary Insurance
As per Peerspace’s terms and conditions, you’re required to maintain the proper
insurance, as required by law and as suitable for your space
2) Peerspace Supplemental Insurance
3) Guest / Event Insurance
4) Vendor Insurance
We recommend that hosts maintain multiple layers of liability insurance
Insurance
13. • Require a bartender for alcohol service
• Make sure all bartenders are licensed and insured
• Do your homework + get references
• Give bartender time to set up and get familiar with the space
• No shots (can selectively enforce)
Here are a couple recommendations for how to ensure responsible alcohol
service in your space
Best Practices
14. Having a go-to bartending service can provide simplicity and safety
• Familiarity: You get to know the staff, and the staff gets to know your space
• Safety: Having the staff report to you greatly increases the chances that
your rules are followed
• Accountability: Staff can be your eyes and ears on the ground
• Efficiency: No more researching company websites, vetting insurance
policies, and answering logistical questions
• Profitability: Offering in-house bartenders can add to your bottom line

55. Fear not, but travel with caution
• Ask Questions: Screen, read between the lines
• Stick to Private Parties: Open to the public, ticketed events, we pass
• Don’t Go Late: We wind down after 11pm, venue clear by midnight
• Monitor the Event: security, site rep, cameras
• Teenagers: All about trusting the parents
• 18-24: Adults? Chaperones? Parental supervision?
• Noise: More drinking, more noise (voices, music)
