The full name of James Joyce (2 February 1882 – 13 January 1941) is James Augustine Aloysius Joyce.
He is an early 20th century Irish novelist and poet.
Joyce is one of the pioneers of ‘stream of consciousness’ technique in novel and a new type of poetry called ‘Prose Poem’.
He is one of the most influential writers in the modernist avant-garde of the early 20th century also.
He used the style of ‘the examination of big events through small happenings in everyday lives’.
Dramas staged between 1660 and 1700 are called ‘Restoration Dramas’. The dramatic literature of the period was dominated by comedies called ‘Comedy of manners’. Actually ‘Restoration Comedy’ is used as a synonym for “Comedy of Manners”. The plot of the comedy, often concerned with scandal, was traditionally less important than its witty dialogues.
The comedy of manners was first developed in the new comedy of the Ancient Greek Playwright Menander. His style, elaborate plots, and stock characters were imitated by the Roman playwrights Plautus and Terence, whose comedies were widely known and copied during the Renaissance. The best-known comedies of manners, however, may well be those of the French playwright Moliere.
Oscar Wilde and William Congreve are the most celebrated authors of ‘Comedy of Manners’.

D. H. Lawrence has displayed a bold originality of his genius and his consummate artistic finesse in Sons and Lovers. With his pioneering artistry, he deviated from the traditional patter of fiction and tried to break fresh grounds.

The Preface to the Lyrical Ballads is an essay, composed by William Wordsworth, for the second edition of the poetry collection Lyrical Ballads, and then greatly expanded in the third edition of 1802. It has come to be seen as a de facto manifesto of the Romantic movement.
:-“Mac Flecknoe; or, A satyr upon the True-Blew-Protestant Poet, T.S.” was a lampoon by John Dryden against the poet laureate Thomas Shadwell who superseded him in 1669.
Mac means ‘son of’. So, MacFlecknoe means ‘Son of Flecknoe’, while the word ‘True-Blew’ means an extreme ‘Whig Blue’ which was the colour of the Tories.
Richard Flecknoe (c. 1600 – 1678) was an English dramatist and poet. His works were praised by some critics and derided by others. Why John Dryden used his name to ridicule and satirize Thomas Shadwell, his contemporary and one time friend who later became an enemy, is not clear. Flecknoe was a minor poet having religious inclinations and most of his writings were private writings. So, Dryden calling him ‘the monarch of absolute nonsense’ was similar to Iago’s ‘motive hunting of a motiveless malignity’. Thomas Shadwell was called the ‘son and successor’ of Flecknoe’.

From The Damned Human Race by Mark Twain
Mark Twain is a central figure in American literature. The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, his finest
work, is the story of a journey down the Mississippi by two memorable figures, a white boy and a
black slave. Twain was born Samuel Langhorne Clemens in 1835 and was raised in Hannibal,
Missouri. During his early years, he worked as a riverboat pilot, newspaper reporter, printer, and gold
prospector.
Although his popular image is as the author of such comic works as The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,
Life on the Mississippi, and The Prince and the Pauper, Twain had a darker side that may have
resulted from the bitter experiences of his life: financial failure and the deaths of his wife and daughter.
His last writings are savage, satiric, and pessimistic. The following selection is taken from Letters
from the Earth, one of his last works. It has been under the title The Damned Human Race and has
been printed in numerous essay anthologies.
Did today’s newspaper feature headlines about people fighting somewhere in the world (Iraq,
Afghanistan, Africa)? Most likely, it did. In the following selection, Mark Twain concludes that the
combative and cruel nature of human beings makes them the lowest of creatures, not the highest. With
scathing irony, he supplies a startling reason for humans’ warlike nature.
The Damned Human Race
Mark Twain
I have been studying the traits and dispositions of the lower animals (so-called), and contrasting them
with the traits and dispositions of man. I find the result humiliating to me. For it obliges me to
renounce my allegiance to the Darwinian theory of the Ascent of Man from the Lower Animals; since
it now seems plain to me that the theory ought to be vacated in favor of a new and truer one, this new
and truer one to be named the Descent of Man from the Higher Animals.
In proceeding toward this unpleasant conclusion I have not guessed or speculated or conjectured, but
have used what is commonly called the scientific method. That is to say, I have subjected every
postulate that presented itself to the crucial test of actual experiment, and have adopted it or rejected it
according to the result. Thus I verified and established each step of my course in its turn before
advancing to the next. These experiments were made in the London Zoological Gardens, and covered
many months of painstaking and fatiguing work.
Before particularizing any of the experiments, I wish to state one or two things which seem to more
properly belong in this place than further along. This, in the interest of clearness. The massed
experiments established to my satisfaction certain generalizations, to wit:
1. That the human race is of one distinct species. It exhibits slight variations (in color, stature,
mental caliber, and so on) due to climate, environment, and so forth; but it is a species by itself, and
not to be confounded with.

All sit~s of enforced marginalisalioll - ghettos, shanty towns, prisons, madhouses, COIl-

too evasive to use the zoo as a symbol. The zoo is a demonstration of the relations
between man and animals; nothing else .
Berger 24
When we go to th e zoo, we take with us all our worries and joys, our heroes and vil-
lains, and we dole them out to the various species, casting each one ill th e role best

Dcrrida. "The Animal Thai Therefore I Am" 402; emphasis in original
The burgeoning field of animal studies offers a new perspective on that ove r-
lap of cultural and performance space that we call mimesi s. In proposing the
neologism "zooes is" for this new perspective, I hope to invoke, as a founda-
tion for my exploration of animal discourses in modern drama, the path-break-
ing work of Cary Wolfe, whose tenn "zoontologies" suggests just how much
is at stake for literature and the humanities in the "the question of the animaL"
Noting the central role played by the figure of the animal and the category of
animality in all those "seminal reroutings of contemporary theory away from
the constitutive figure of the human " (Wolfe, Introduction xi) in the works of

Donna Haraway, Wolfe also points out that work in contemporary sciences,
especially cognitive ethnology and field eco logy , has decisively undermined
" the old saws of anthropocentricism (language, tool use, the inheritance of
c ultural behaviors)" (x i). These phil osophical and sc ientific deve lopments that
bring the animal into view in new ways have also enabled new analyses of the
many contexts in whi ch anim ali ty has been depl oyed rhetorically to oppres.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.
June 3, 2024 Anti-Semitism Letter Sent to MIT President Kornbluth and MIT Cor...Levi Shapiro
Letter from the Congress of the United States regarding Anti-Semitism sent June 3rd to MIT President Sally Kornbluth, MIT Corp Chair, Mark Gorenberg
Dear Dr. Kornbluth and Mr. Gorenberg,
The US House of Representatives is deeply concerned by ongoing and pervasive acts of antisemitic
harassment and intimidation at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Failing to act decisively to ensure a safe learning environment for all students would be a grave dereliction of your responsibilities as President of MIT and Chair of the MIT Corporation.
This Congress will not stand idly by and allow an environment hostile to Jewish students to persist. The House believes that your institution is in violation of Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, and the inability or
unwillingness to rectify this violation through action requires accountability.
Postsecondary education is a unique opportunity for students to learn and have their ideas and beliefs challenged. However, universities receiving hundreds of millions of federal funds annually have denied
students that opportunity and have been hijacked to become venues for the promotion of terrorism, antisemitic harassment and intimidation, unlawful encampments, and in some cases, assaults and riots.
The House of Representatives will not countenance the use of federal funds to indoctrinate students into hateful, antisemitic, anti-American supporters of terrorism. Investigations into campus antisemitism by the Committee on Education and the Workforce and the Committee on Ways and Means have been expanded into a Congress-wide probe across all relevant jurisdictions to address this national crisis. The undersigned Committees will conduct oversight into the use of federal funds at MIT and its learning environment under authorities granted to each Committee.
• The Committee on Education and the Workforce has been investigating your institution since December 7, 2023. The Committee has broad jurisdiction over postsecondary education, including its compliance with Title VI of the Civil Rights Act, campus safety concerns over disruptions to the learning environment, and the awarding of federal student aid under the Higher Education Act.
• The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is investigating the sources of funding and other support flowing to groups espousing pro-Hamas propaganda and engaged in antisemitic harassment and intimidation of students. The Committee on Oversight and Accountability is the principal oversight committee of the US House of Representatives and has broad authority to investigate “any matter” at “any time” under House Rule X.
• The Committee on Ways and Means has been investigating several universities since November 15, 2023, when the Committee held a hearing entitled From Ivory Towers to Dark Corners: Investigating the Nexus Between Antisemitism, Tax-Exempt Universities, and Terror Financing. The Committee followed the hearing with letters to those institutions on January 10, 202

6. Animal Fables
• In traditional animal fables, the trickster fox cheats the birds of prey out of the next meal, and in Volpone, the
trickster cheats the legacy-hunters out of their fortune. In the food chain of the animal kingdom, the mammal
would die, the carrion birds would feast on the carcass, and the insects would devour what was left. The
"trick" of the play seems to be set up the same way: Volpone would die, the legacy-hunters would fight for his
fortune, and Mosca would be left with whatever scraps the victor chose to throw him. But this natural order is
turned upside down by the characters' unnatural greed. From the beginning, Volpone dupes the legacy-
hunters, but when he greedily binges on the pleasure of their suffering, he makes himself vulnerable to
Mosca's attack. Sensing an opportunity to feast on the entire carcass himself, the fly usurps the carrion birds.
In doing so, the natural order is so destroyed that Volpone confesses everything, leaving everyone open to the
court's harsh punishment.
