The RBS Innovation Gateway
Challenge - RBS is on a journey to maximise resource efficiency by targeting opportunities to reduce energy, waste and water
from across its estate. In order to do this we realised that we need to discover and nurture new innovations which would help to
drive resource efficiency in our buildings, in doing so we would support customers to accelerate their innovations to market.
Overview
Solution
• RBS partnered with 2degrees in December 2013 to build and
manage an online innovation community.
• RBS collaborates with hundreds of SMEs, innovators and
experts in order to crowd source qualified ideas, prototypes and
market ready propositions with the potential to help save water,
waste and energy on the estate.
• Garage-tested and market-ready innovations pitch to trial within
the RBS estate.
• Those at conceptual stage are given practical help and a business
grant.
• Successful innovators then have the opportunity to use one of the
2,500 RBS properties as a live test environment, with the potential
to roll out the best of these solutions across the estate later.
Results
• The Innovation Gateway community has grown to 1070 members
through which we continue crowd source further innovations to help
meet sustainability targets. We recently completed the third round of
the Gateway:
• Initial launch - Over 140 qualified innovations crowd sourced in the
first 8 weeks, with 26 named finalists. The first round of the Gateway
has the potential to generate at least 10% of energy budget savings
over the next 3 years.
• Gogarburn regeneration – From nanotechnology to beehives,8
SMEs emerged from the Gogarburn Challenge with diverse solutions
for our most iconic campus in a bid to reduce impacts
• Bristol Challenge - Thermal imaging to bird boxes, 12 successful
SME’s emerged from the Bristol Go Green Challenge with a range of
solutions for Bristol properties. Further enhancing Bristol’s green
credentials as the UK’s first European Green Capital.

Bristol Innovation Gateway/ low carbon branch
Summary – Launched in June this year - successful eco-innovations will be trialled in RBS Bristol properties as part of the bank’s
on going search for cutting edge solutions to save water, waste, energy and travel. From thermal imaging to bird boxes, the 11
successful SME’s that emerged from the Bristol Go Green Challenge will bring a diverse range of solutions to the bank’s Bristol
properties and beyond. This will contribute significantly to our ambition to create a low/ zero carbon branch adding to solar power.

Innovation Gateway
• The Innovation Gateway community has grown to 1070 members
• In Bristol it fostered 91 ideas focused on the five pillars.
• The ideas will be implemented in Bristol include:
• 1. Halcyan Water Conditioners are a passive, eco-friendly solution to
hard water which uses alloys to the change the shape and structure
of the mineral content to create softer water.
• 2. Bird Brick Houses provide essential nest sites for birds whilst
fitting neatly into the brickwork of new and existing buildings.
• 3 . Green Rewards’ JUMP programme embeds sustainability and
well-being in organisations via a platform that tracks positive
behaviours and rewards participants for improvements.
• 4. EndoTherm by EndoEnterprises is a unique, energy saving
central heating additive that helps radiators heat up quicker and
stay warmer for longer reducing boiler load and energy use.
• 5. ShoweBoB from BoB Products helps people save water, energy
and money every time they take a shower by providing a visual
reminder of the impact of your shower.
• 6. Oxypod, is a compact device that removes air from the water in
heating systems resulting in warmer rooms, a reduction in energy
usage and an improvement in boiler performance.
• 7. Supergreen’s Infrastore is a Far Infrared, open vented thermal
storage system that ensures heating and hot water requirements are
met with optimal energy use.
• 8. IES’ CI2 Technology Led Consulting makes smart use of
operational building data together with 3D performance models and
real weather data to better manage energy efficiency onsite.
• 9. Ocuair Ltd’s IRT Carbon Dashboard can quantify a thermal image
to identify the location and range of heat, energy, carbon and
money that is being lost through a building’s infrastructure.
• 10. Free Flow Valve from Envirowater is a retro-fit, water free urinal
system which saves water, prevents bad odour and reduces costs.
• 11. PhotonStar LED’s HalcyonPRO is an intelligent wireless lighting
system, which uses the behavioural, environmental and energy data
that it gathers to deliver the right light at the right time.
Low carbon branch
• The Senslogix product will also support engagement and awareness
as we install a visible dashboard of our environmental
performance in branch and measure the impact of new projects on
site.
• Existing solar PV installation to create a truly low carbon branch.
• Propelair toilets reduce water per use by 84%
• Water flow devices will halve tap water use.
• Carbon assessor being appointed to measure impact.

Sustainable sourcing
Summary – Workplace Services are working with key suppliers to understand how they can support us to operate more
sustainably as part of this project and others. Following strategy meetings we have aligned specific responsibilities to suppliers to
support. The Supply Chain Services team have policy, guidance and a sustainable sourcing code to guide decisions on new and
existing contracts.
Go Green – Say it > Do it
Sustainable procurement code
• We expect our suppliers to prioritise the following: Community
Initiatives, Diversity, Standards & Principles, Sustainability Risk
Management and the Environment.
• Regarding the Environment suppliers must: Manage their
operations in accordance with good environmental practice, including
policies and procedures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions,
energy use, water use, waste generation, consumption of finite
natural resources and pollution of land, air and water. Suppliers must
develop products and services which can be utilised to help improve
our own environmental performance
Share and communicate success
• We can celebrate and recognise success in partnership with our
suppliers by working on case studies of best practice. Workplace
accreditations and wards like Fairplace for example can help us to
reach the press in collaboration with PR and comms teams to
celebrate success.
Local sourcing and SME’s
• We should strive to source as many services and products locally as
possible. Baxter Storey are committed to sourcing from the South
West for the Bristol area.
• The Innovation Gateway will provide local SME’s the opportunity to
pilot their products and prove concept on the RBS estate.
• We can look at establishing regular “meet the supplier days” locally
and training is available on sustainable procurement (i)
