Using a baby stroller in Manhattan – is it advisable?
Are the streets of Manhattan baby stroller-friendly? I have a teeny weeny umbrella stroller.
Thanks!

Sure, people do it all the time. Plus they push, carry things alot bigger than a
stroller.

Is it ok to use a little umbrella-stroller for a 4-month old baby?

Usuallly babies are ok in it. The only concern that pediatricians have against
using them is because it hurts babies little backs to be in the sitting position
when they haven’t learned to sit up correctly, as well as for a long period of time. If your
baby seems uncomfy or slumping over too much then I would say no, its not ok.

Has anyone flown with Virgin Atlantic with a baby stroller?
Has anyone flown with Virgin Atlantic and had trouble asking to have the stroller handy
when landing on a connecting flight? I will be flying from Lax to India with an 8 hour layover in
London and I would like to have the stroller handy. I have contacted Virgin Atlantic 3 times and the 3
times I have had a completely different answer. Does anyone know anything in regards to the
strollers being able to pass through security check points in the airports? (The stroller I have is not
an umbrella stroller)

I haven’t flown Virgin Atlantic. I did work at Heathrow for 6 years and I know it’s
possible to have the stroller at connections there. Our passengers did but I
can’t speak for Virgin.
Their website doesn’t give much information except to say that it can be brought for free;
“Infants are entitled to one piece of hand luggage weighing no more than 6kg. This is over
and above the buggy or bassinet or car seat, which are carried free of charge.”
http://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/us/passengerinformation/baggage/handbaggage.jsp
I can also confirm that strollers can go through security. They can either be hand-checked
(although in some places this is discourged) or folded and put through the X-ray.
Most major airlines don’t require umbrella strollers but it must fold, and virtually all
strollers sold today do.
With airlines, sending an email is better than calling them. You can print it out and show
the staff if necessary.
customer.services@fly.virgin.com
Be clear that you want your stroller delivered to you on the “bridge” or “jetway”, not at
baggage claim which technically, you don’t have to go through since you’re continuing on
to India. I assume (and hope) you are not leaving the airport for your layover (unless you
have a dayroom in a local hotel).
You could also put your question to this forum, specific to Virgin;
http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=506
For more information on flying with children in general, I wrote a totally non-commercial
article which is featured this month on the Expat Women site;
http://www.expatwomen.com/mothers/flying_with_children.php
or directly on the blog;

Good luck getting it back for your long layover.

If I buy a Snap and Go stroller frame what happens when the baby outgrows the
carrier/car seat?
Is there any way the Snap and Go can be used as a stroller? Do I then have to buy a full-sized
stroller until the baby is ready for an umbrella stroller?

You will have to purchase another stroller, as there is no way to use the Snap &
Go as a stroller without the carseat.
By the time your child outgrows the carseat, s/he could probably go into an umbrella
stroller. However, I would recommend a full size stroller- they are much more comfortable
for baby.

How old should a baby be to be in an umbrella stroller ?
If it also has shoulder straps ?? She is able to hold her head up, just not sit on her own
yet, but since the stroller has shoulder straps then it should be fine right ?

we waited till my daughter was able to sit up on her own well before we put her
in one, just because ours didn’t lean back far and she was sitting almost
straight up in it. I was just afraid that she would flop right out.
But put your baby in it, if you have it. Drive it around your kitchen, see how she does. as
long as you feel safe with her in it, and she doesn’t look uncomfortable, then go for it…

Question about baby gates and umbrella strollers?
What’s the point in a gate if you’re in a 1 story house?
What’s the point in an umbrella stroller if you have a bigger one, besides that its lighter and
smaller? Like when would you use it instead of a big one?

I LOVED my umbrella stroller, so much more convenient than my big travel
system.
I really only used the travel system while baby was a newborn because the car seat clicks
into, or when we went to an amusement park or something where I needed the extra
compartment on the bottom for things.
I usually put the baby gate up at the kitchen entrance when I was cooking to prevent any
accidents, I was always terrified my daughter would somehow open the oven while it was
on or something…

When Michelle Duggar puts an infant carrier in an umbrella-style stroller, is that safe?
It just doesn’t seem as safe as a snap and go- travel system. I don’t understand how it
stays put, when she puts little Josie in her baby bucket, in the umbrella stroller.

It is not safe to place an infant carrier in any stroller or cart unless it is secured
in some way, as the carrier could tip or fall. Even if the carrier is secured, the
child should be closely supervised the entire time. It isn’t safe to put a carrier in an
umbrella stroller that isn’t designed for it, because the weight is not distributed in the way
the stroller was designed for and it could cause tipping. I haven’t seen the Duggar’s
stroller, but if it is a combo system where the carrier snaps in, then it would be safe.
However, based on what I’ve read on message boards, that isn’t the case. The Duggars
can certainly afford a safe stroller, so it’s a shame that they would risk their child in that
way.

Which is a better umbrella stroller – Maclaren or Baby Planet?
Has anyone used one or both of these strollers that can list pros/cons? I have also
researched the Chicco Capri and a few others that are similar….does anyone have a

Toddler & Baby – Umbrella stroller? San Francisco trip?
we are flying to san francisco this weekend – 2 1/2 yr old & 10 month old – will be staying
a week visiting SF and bay area to Santa Cruz. Anyhow – 1st time flying with them. I understand
umbrella strollers are the way to go – I’ll have to go purchase today – DO WE NEED A TWIN
Umbrella STROLLER? Or would 2 singles work OK? I’m thinking of logistics of sightseeing…cable
cars, ease of folding & carrying. And – how is the JEEP TWIN UMBRELLA for folding & carrying
(again, cable cars, etc) Right now I have: 1 Maclaren Techo for toddler & Combi stroller frame (pop
carseat into it) I use at home. The twin umbrella is harder to find – so cant decide if I should just go
for 2 singles? thanks

I have children..
I would say two umbrella strollers or better yet… 2 stroller and one back
carrier….
**Some streets like in Chinatown you will not be able to push a double stroller at all you
would have to walk in the street**…. unless it is one of the double strollers with a seat in
the front and a seat in the back…. single strollers are easy and lighter to carry then a big
double one and cheaper… Get one that will be easy for them to nap or for you to change a
diaper…At times I have put two children in one stroller for short peiods of time ………..

lightweight umbrella-type stroller with parent facing baby?
Does anyone know of a lightweight umbrella-type stroller where the baby faces the
parent? My daughter’s too big for her infant seat in the travel system stroller, but I still want to be
able to face her and talk to her while pushing her around.

Hi,
The following pushchairs are all umbrella folding and have reversible seats (so
your darling daughter can face you or the direction of travel). I dont know how strong you
are so I dont want to assume what you would regard as “light” or “heavy” so i’ve included
the actual weight of these models:
Chicco Trio For Me Travel System weighs 10.4 kg (23 lbs) which is light for a travel
system. The seat is reversible.
Maxi Cosi Loola Up Travel System weighs 13.6 kg
Maxi Cosi Loola Travel System weighs 13.1 kg
Inglesina Ottuto Travel System weighs 13.2 kg
The lighter pushchairs that have reversible seat units usually to fold concertina or scissor
-style, NOT umbrella-style, so you may want to take this into consideration, as you are
severely limiting your options by wanting umbrella-folding pushchairs only

How do you know when your baby is ready for an umbrella stroller?
My 5 month old can hold his head up steady but isn’t able to sit up unassisted yet. Is it
only safe for a baby to sit in an umbrella stroller only after he/she is able to sit up on his own? I have
seen some umbrella strollers that recline back pretty far and was wondering if one of these would
do damage to his developing spine. This will be my first stroller for him.

When your baby has good head control and is able to sit with support. Some
are not very sturdy, so the better your baby can sit up on his/her own then the
better.

It dosen’t fold like an unbrella stroller but it’s very small and compact, one hald
fold, reclines and I can’t remember if it’s a 3 or 5 point harness. The Jeep
Cherokee stroller, they have them everyone now and I got mine at Wal-Mart for about 50.
Good luck!

When can a baby sit in an umbrella stroller?
I have a 7mo daughter and she weighs approx 6.5kgs (14lb something..) just wondering
when the best time is to ditch the bulky pram for an upright umbrella stroller? She can support her
head fine, and has for months now, problem is she might be a bit small for it..

As long as she can support her head well, she will be fine. The only thing is
with umbrella strollers, is that some of them don’t recline to a layback position,
so if your baby falls asleep, they will get a sore neck.
I don’t think she’d be ‘too small’ because you would strap her in. Try to find one with a 5
point harness system for extra safety

my baby slouches i his umbrella stroller…?
I just went out and bought him the jeep wrangler umbrella stroller. It doesn’t recline
much, but he holds his head up very very well, but he seems to slouch down in the seat, almost
giving off the appearance of a humpback? Should I hold off on the use of the stroller and stick to his
travel system one for longer? Or is this normal? Oh and he doesn’t sit unassisted yet, but he is fully
capable of just “hanging out” sitting up when I prop him up myself.
He’s 2 months old, but even the doctors say he’s very strong. But I guess I agree, he does seem
kind of uncomfortable, I’ll wait.

How old is he?
If he looks uncomfortable I would keep using his travel system which obviously
reclines more, otherwise his spine could end up becoming damaged.

care for them as they dont seem to have as much rooms as regular sized
strollers. However, there is really no set age for Umbrella Stroller- But, normally people
don’t put babies in them until she can sit up on there own. Hope this helps.

What is a good light weight/umbrella stroller for a 4.5month old baby?
I am going to be traveling and want to buy something that I can use in the airports and will
be easy to take with me to push around my daughter. She has great head control so far and sits in
a bumbo seat wonderfully. Does anyone have any good suggestions on a light weight stroller that
reclines that way I’m not having to just carry her around every where while we are on vacation?

A regular umbrella stroller isnt recommended for babies under 6 months-but if
you’re looking for a lightweight small stroller The CHICCO is my TOP PICK!

If you want something a bit more high end… you can pick the Graco Ipo…
http://www.toysrus.com/product/index.jsp?productId=3458512
It’s also lightweight, more comfortable for your baby. You also have to think that your 4.5
mos old baby will be taking naps there as well..and she needs to be comfy….
this Safety 1st looks like a great option..

When can i use the umbrella stroller for my baby? she’s 3 months?
and still has a jerky/floppy neck but can hold it sorta on her own, but I still have to support
it. also, she tries to sit up though very far from it by raising her head from her shoulders when sitting
down in her carseat or bouncer, she can also lift her head up on her own spontaneously
sometimes now. also, i am still using the Graco snap n’go with the newborn car seat. Is it okay to to
just stick with that til she can be in the umbrella stroller, or will she be too squeezed in? shes 14 lbs
now.
also, i am still using the newborn car seat…is that okay?

Newborn car seats can be used up until your infant weighs 20 pounds, so she
will be fine in that for several more months. You shouldn’t use an umbrella
stroller until your child is at least 6 months – and only that early if she can sit up well on
her own.

I started using it as soon as Em was able to sit-up on her own. I knew at that
age that she had the stomach and neck muscles to hold herself steady since
umbrella strollers don’t recline.
I think expecting a child to be 3 before using an umbrella stroller is very unrealistic! Most
umbrella strollers are very narrow and the straps for the waist are small- even on the
largest size it seems like they don’t expand a lot.
