Meet and greet at The Winter Gardens
Friday 30th
September 2022
The Sunderland Museum and Winter Gardens
The tour and meet and great was with Jennie from the Winter Gardens.
The Winter Gardens was established in 1846 where it was the first municipally funded museum in
the country outside of London. The first recorded fine line acquisition was commissioned by the
Sunderland Corporation, this may have been the first time that artwork was commissioned by a
town council. In 1879 the museum moved to a new larger building next to Mowbray Park which
then included a library and the Winter Gardens. The Winter Gardens contain over 2,000 flowers
and plants and in 2003 the museum was recognised as the most visited outside of London.
The Winter Gardens holds events for families and children during the holidays and throughout the
day.
What did you learn?
Although it wasn’t related to media, I learned about artifacts that the Winter Gardens has and
how they use their facilities to host different events. The Winter Gardens doesn’t include a lot of
media related products or events within the museum apart from their TVs that show the history in
Sunderland. This event didn’t make me think about potential careers; however, they did mention
volunteer working at the museum. The opportunities that were available was to help host future
events during the October holidays. This event helped me to meet the owner of the Winter
Gardens. This event didn’t help me with any of my current project and I didn’t gain any new skills.
