Diary
After coming to a decision on what I wanted my documentary to be based around
which was ‘Music In the North East’ and how it has shaped the area into the place it
is today. I then had to decide on which local talent I wanted to include within my
interview, luckily one of my work colleagues is an upcoming music talent within the
North East. James Fish is a local DJ who has recently become co- founder of the
music company ‘My House’. James use to be apart of a band with his friends who
performed at the ‘Music for Minds festival’ and that’s where his music career
started. After having a discussion with James about my documentary and what I
was planning to do he was more than happy to come in for an interview, however
due to personal scheduling problems and work timetables filming was delayed by a
few weeks than planned. On the 10th March I had a discussion with James about
moving the filming day to the 13th March and he was available to come into the
studio to film on that day, I was then able to book out the studio for 2 hours and
start the interview on that day.
The filming day ran from 9am-11am due to James having to get back to sixth form,
however during the 2 hour session we were able to run through the interview 3
times to add more detail to the answers of the questions and to ensure we had the
right angles and the right lighting. During the filming process we ran into a few
technical issues as the lights in the studio kept on flashing and going off. We then
both decided on a new lighting where the lights would cause much issue. However,
even after changing the lighting we still ran into issues as they were still flashing, to
try and solve this I opted to use one light to shine on one side of his face to give a
darker effect. After filming both me and the artist ran through the footage and
decided on which clips were they best once we were both happy with it we ended
the filming day.

When thinking about other locations that I wanted to include in my
documentary, I wanted to include Tynemouth as that is where Sam Fender is
from. By including Tynemouth this allows me to link my documentary to the
local area but also Sam Fender which is included in my documentary for a
large section.
On this day i went to Tynemouth early in the morning at around 7am to try
and catch the sunrise but due to the weather I was unable to catch it in the
specific area. Although I had run into a little set back with the shots that I
wanted to use, I was still able to get some shots of the beach and Tynemouth
front street. The filming day ran from 7am- 10am to allow me to try and get a
variety of images, although after looking at the weather app I could then see
that it was expected to rain for around an hour which delayed my filming.
One of the key reasons why I wanted to film in Tynemouth was to include the
local pub ‘The Low Lights Tavern’ as that is where Sam Fenders Britt award is
and where he started his career. However as I went so early in the morning I
was unable to film inside the building as it was shut. After thinking about what
I could do with having delays in filming due to the weather and what time of
day I went I then decided I would spread m filming day over 2 days to see if I
could get any better results by filming a few days later. During the 3 hour
filming slot that I had given myself I was able to capture shots of castle, the
front street and the beach. I also wanted to include footage of the sea to
Within the next few days due to the weather I was unable to travel back to Tynemouth to get
the shots that I was wanting, so try and get around this issue I went to Roker beach in
Sunderland to gather a few shots from there. After checking the weather app and seeing that it
was clear weather for the sunrise I then arrived at the beach at around 5am where I was then
able to capture a few shots of the beach. I wanted to get a bit of footage at Roker and Seaburn
beach as music also plays a large part at the beach with ‘The Stack’ which holds many music
events and often allows local and young talent perform on stage. Although I didn’t get any
footage from the Stack I was able to capture the sunset along the beach as I wanted to show
the surrounding areas of the North East rather than focusing on the city I wanted to show the
natural beauty within the area.
Due to the brief being based around ‘Sunderland Culture’ I believed that it was suitable to film
at one of the main attractions in Sunderland which is the beach, as well as having beautiful
walks it also has a large music scene as said previously the Stack is the main reason for that.
The stack is built out of 70 new and used shipping containers that built and completed in
September 2020. The Stack allows young local artists to start their careers and get their name
out there by performing on their stage by having ‘open mic nights’ which allows anyone to
perform on the stage. By showing both the surrounding areas on Sunderland and the natural
beauty of the nation it allows me to create a more varied documentary rather than just showing
the city life. However, in the city centre is where Sunderlands music scene is really brought to
life by venues such as: The Point, The Bunker, Independent and The Fire Station which allows
many local artists to create a name for themselves such as artist Tom Smith who has recently
been on tour with Elton John to do a few supporting acts for him. Tom lives in Sunderland and
started performing in small venues in the city centre and at the music festival ‘Waves’. The
festival is based in Sunderland and Is a venue crawl to see different artists in different venues
across Sunderland. Due to these popular music venues I would also like to include these in
