2. Pre- edit
Before I started editing I decided that I would run through all
of my footage that I had collected to decide which footage
would be best to use for my documentary. Once I had
decided on the clips that I wanted to use I then created a
separate bin for specific areas of footage. For example in this
bin it was all the footage related to my interview with James
so I named it ‘James’ to ensure that all the correct footage
went into that bin. Although I didn’t change the names of the
files I could see what the majority of them were from their
thumbnails that were shown. However, there was a specific
file that I named ‘11 minute’ as that was one of the main takes
that we ran through and it was when there was technical
difficulties with the lighting which then allowed to know which
was the video with many lighting changes. With my
documentary being about music I had to also think about
what I could and couldn’t include within my documentary due
to copy right claims on YouTube. When thinking about music I
can include I realised that including large samples of Sam
Fenders music would definitely get copy righted so I had to
change my plan for the introduction slightly to ensure that my
video didn’t get copy righted straight away. For editing my
documentary I decided on using Premier Pro as that I easily
accessible to me and is also industry standard, by using this
software this allows me to gain better knowledge of the
software overall and help me with future projects.

3. Introduction
20XX presentation title 3
Similar to the pre edit when I named specific bins for footage, I
also included this for the introduction by naming a bin ‘Intro’ which
allowed me to easily pick out and access footage specifically for
the introduction. With my introduction I had a set idea on what I
wanted my documentary to start like, I wanted the title of my
documentary to start small and slowly grow towards a full screen
with some form of music in the background. To do this I created a
text box and added the title of my documentary which is ‘Music In
The Northeast’. After I had done that, I then went to the effects tab
of Premier Pro and added a key frame at 0 seconds and then
dragged the marker along to where my text ended. I then added
another key frame at the end and increased the scale until I was
happy with how the text sat within the frame. As said previously I
wanted to add music or some form of background noise to the
introduction, when thinking about what I wanted I finally decided
on having an interview with Sam Fender in the background to give
some form of introduction to both the documentary and to one of
the artists that I would be discussing in my documentary. I had to
also take into consideration copy right claims as Sam Fender is a
very well-known artist and my video would most likely be copy
righted straight away, I didn’t want to include long clips of his
music within the first few minutes of my documentary.
4. Cutting the Clips
20XX 4
One I had gathered all of my clips I then had to decide which interview
that I wanted to use. As we had ran through the questions 3 times to
ensure that the interview ran as smoothly as it could and to ensure that
all of the questions were answered to the best of their ability, this allowed
me to gather 3 different interviews. However, in the main take of the
interview we had technical difficulties within the lighting as they kept on
flashing throughout various areas of the 2nd take. When editing with the
2nd take it was proven to be difficult as the lights would flash in the
middle of a question which would distract my interviewee. To try and fix
this we did a 3rd take but changed the lighting to ensure that this wouldn’t
happen again. With the lighting I decided to just have a singular light
shining on one side o f his face and on the background to create a
mysterious and ominous effect on the actor and allow the audience to
think about the actor as a character.
After I had decided on using the final take of my interview I started on
cutting down the clips. I did this by using the razor tool and by zooming
in on the clips to make sure I made accurate cuts within the video.
During the interview James took long pauses and used the word ‘like’ a
lot so to ensure that there was as little pauses and delays in my
interview I cut them out and tried to match the sound back up to try and
disguise the cut that had been made in the video. As said previously, I
5. Stock footage

When editing my documentary, I had to include stock footage as I was unable
to get specific footage that I wanted I my documentary. For example, I was
unable to get any footage of Sam Fender for obvious reasons as he is a
famous artist and is unable to drop any events that he is currently doing for an
interview. However, to try and stay more organised I created a bin called ‘Sam
Fender’ which allowed me to see what footage I was using for the Sam Fender
segment of my documentary, this also allowed me easy access to my footage
and to see my footage easily. When looking for videos of the artist I decided id
use small clips from his music videos which he appears in as well as previous
interview clips that he had done in the past. By using stock footage this
allowed me to fill in any gaps that I had in my documentary and that I could
film due to me physically not being able to or to scheduling issues. For the
music video clips I gathered videos from Dead Boys, Spit Of You, Seventeen
Going Under, Hypersonic Mistitles and Howden Aldi Death Queue. When
choosing the music clips I chose carefully as I wanted tom pin point different
points in his career from the very start to previous day, this has allowed me to
show the audience the growth within his career and within his music. In this
segment of the documentary, I have also included some stock drown footage
of Tynemouth as well as my own footage, I have included this footage as this
is where Sam Fender is from and wanted to include a small section about his
childhood and where he grew up as it is in the North East and fits the given
brief as well as fitting my documentary idea.
6. Sound
As my documentary is based around music, I have been careful to ensure that all
music that could be copyrighted has been used in small amounts. As said
previously I have used clips of Sam Fenders music videos, but due to the music
being copyrighted I had to remove all the music from the background ensure that
my video didn’t get copyrighted. I then found a clip of Sam Fender from when he
started his career in 2013 at a pub in Tynemouth called The Watch House. I
decided for this clip I wanted a black screen introducing the scene; however, I also
wanted the sound to be heard before the clip was seen. For this I brought the
sound forward and matched it up with the video the best I could to prevent delay
within the video. The sound before the video was a song called ‘Downtown’ from
Bensounds to use within the background of the music video clips, to ensure that
there wasn’t just a sudden cut off in the music I put an exponential fade on the
track to allow it to slowly fade into the video of Sam talking. By doing this it has
allowed me to grab my audience's attention by fading out the music which creates
curiosity as to what is to come next. Over some of my clips I have added a voice
over to inform my audience of Sams up bringing and information about the
Northeast. This allows me to not have to worry about copyright as it will be my own
voiceover. Due to scheduling issues, I was unable to book out the studio in time to
record a voiceover with an actual microphone, to get over this problem I used the
voice message app on my phone which still produces a high-quality sound for my
documentary. Throughout my editing process I then decided that the original sound
I used to called ‘downtown’ just didn’t fit my documentary as I thought it did. I then
changed the sound to ‘moose’ as it has a more upbeat yet intense sound to it,
which I think fits my documentary more. Another thing I had to take into
consideration was as Sam swears a lot, I had to censor a few of the clips to keep
my documentary professional. To do this I just cut out the section where he swears
