Lord David Puttnam spoke at Sunderland University about changes in the film and media industries. He discussed how streaming services have grown significantly in recent years while blockbuster films are decreasing in popularity. Additionally, he showed charts and statistics about how gaming now makes $153 billion annually while streaming makes $256 billion. The talk helped students learn about potential careers in the industry and the facilities available at the university and from other schools to support jobs in media.

David Puttnam is well known for Chariots of fire (1981), The mission (1986) and Killing Fields
(1984)
In 2006 he was made a Fellow of BAFTA
He was also chancellor of the University of Sunderland
I learned about how streaming services have grown over the past years and how blockbuster films
are slowly decreasing in popularity.
I also learned that gaming was making 153 billion and streaming was making 256 billion
I learned more about the industry by being shown different charts and statistics about the
industry and how some elements are decreasing and increasing.
It helped to think about potential careers by showing us what jobs are needed within the industry
like dubbing which is a job that has grown in popularity within the industry.
In the talk he discussed different facilities in the university that were available to us and also
discussed different equipment that would be available to us.
It helped us meet relevant people by lectures from other universities like The Northern School Of
Art and mangers for the Northern Screen were also there to talk about their facilities and how
they can support us with jobs in the media.
I believe by being shown different charts and statistics about the industry it has allowed me to see
what is more popular in the industry which helps me target my current work towards that specific
sector of the industry.
From this talk I haven't learnt any new skills but has allowed me to learn information about the
media that I didn’t know before.
