2. Andrew Goodwin’s 5 key aspects of
music videos.
• Thought Beats – seeing the sound.
• Narrative and performance.
• The Star image.
• Relation of visuals to song.
• Technical aspects of Music Video
3. Thought Beats.
The first step of Andrew Goodwin's theory on though
beats is looking at the music itself for example taking
notice of choruses and verses.
Secondly we look at he singers voice, this can always be a
large part of the thought process as most people can
recognise an artist by there grain and tone of voice
making them recognisable.
Thirdly, the artists mode of address, this is the
representation of both a story being told and someone
singing along. Giving us two options and a more
fulfilled experience when watching a music video.
4. Narrative and Performance.
Songs always fail to show a whole narrative
therefore leaving us to decide what has just
happened. Goodwin's theory illustrates how we
should ignore common narrative.
Music videos should be coherent, as narrative and
performance work hand in hand and a music
video would not work properly without both
combined, for example the artist being both the
main character and singer in the narrative makes
the appearance appear a lot more real allowing
the audience to watch over and over.
5. Star Image.
The star image is a huge part of any act, this is
how the artists appears to the audience in a
variety of factors, for example what they are
wearing, there personality and there overall
iconography. This does not only help sell the
artist but helps represent who they are and
about them to there relating audience.
6. Relation of visuals to song.
• Illustrate – using a set of images and video’s to
illustrate the storyline.
• Amplify – Constantly repeating certain parts of
the video to drill it into our minds and make
us remember what has happened.
• Disjuncture – This is where the meaning of the
song is completely ignored.
7. Technical aspects of a music video.
•Sound.
•Editing.
•Mise-en-scene.
•Camera work.
