M1 / Westlink,
Belfast,
United Kingdom
A consortium under the lead-
ership of Bilfinger Berger was
awarded a 30-year conces-
sion to develop, finance and
maintain 60 km of major traffic
routes in the area of Belfast.
As one part of the project, the
consortium will design and
construct a new alignment for
the arterial M1 / Westlink
highway, running through the
heart of Belfast. The project
volume amounts to USD 267
million, while Bilfinger Berger’s
equity commitment is around
USD 15 million. During the
30-years operating phase, the
company will receive a de-
fined income from state au-
thorities.
The M1 / Westlink is the main
access route leading from
Belfast to the south and west
of the Province and to the
Republic of Ireland. Within
Belfast, it provides access to
the largest commercial area in
Northern Ireland, as well as
the major commercial and
passenger Port of Belfast and
the City Airport.
The improvements to M1 /
Westlink involve:
- two new grade-separated
junctions
- reconstruction of a grade-
separated junction
- upgrading of junctions
- widening to provide a dual
three-lane motorway
- replacing of bridges and
improving roundabouts
- construction of under-
passes
- introducing of bus priority
measures
- providing segregated
cycleway / footway
- upgrading of the motor-
way’s communication sys-
tems and variable mes-
sage signing
During construction, traffic
has to be maintained all the
time. Therefore a traffic man-
agement system will be im-
plemented to reduce interrup-
tion of traffic to a minimum.
The design and construction
contract for these works was
awarded to a joint venture
comprising Bilfinger Berger
and two local construction
companies.
Contract Value:
USD (m) 199.0
(construction only)
Construction Period:
02/2006 – 11/2009
