  1. 1. Ozone Layer Depletion - By
  2. 2. What is Ozone? • Ozone is an elemental molecule with formula O3. • Ozone is a pale blue gas composed of three oxygen atoms bonded together. • Nearly 90% of Earth’s Ozone is in the Stratosphere known as Ozone layer. • It protects Earth’s surface from harmful Ultraviolet rays. • It is harmful at ground level.
  3. 3. Importance of Ozone Layer Ozone layer plays a vital role in the protection of all living beings. The sun propagates ultraviolet radiations which as an adverse effect on living beings. This layer absorbs the radiations and prohibits them from entering the outer surface of the earth.
  4. 4. Ozone Layer Depletion • Ozone layer depletion is the gradual thinning of the earth’s ozone layer in the upper atmosphere. • It is caused due to the release of chemical compounds from industries or other human activities. • These are basically called ODS that stands for Ozone-Depleting Substance. • These ozone depletion substances float and then reach the stratosphere. • They are capable of breaking down the molecules of the ozone layer. • Therefore, it results in the depletion of the ozone layer.
  5. 5. Causes of Ozone Depletion MAN-MADE CAUSES: • Chlorofluorocarbons (CFCs) • Halons • Methyl chloroform(CH3CCl3) • Hydro-chlorofluorocarbons(HCFCs) • Methyl Bromide NATURAL CAUSES: • Sun-spots • Stratospheric Winds • Volcanic Eruptions
  6. 6. Impacts of Ozone Depletion Effects on Humans and animals Humans and animals will be directly exposed to the harmful ultraviolet radiation of the sun which might result in serious health issues among humans, such as skin diseases, cancer, sunburns, etc. and among animals, such as skin and eye cancer. Effects on the Environment Strong ultraviolet rays may lead to minimal growth, flowering and photosynthesis in plants. The forests also have to bear the harmful effects of the ultraviolet rays. Effects on Marine Life Planktons are greatly affected by the exposure to harmful ultraviolet rays. These are higher in the aquatic food chain. If the planktons are destroyed, the organisms present in the food chain are also affected.
  7. 7. Preventive Measures • Avoid using ODS by replacing CFCs in refrigerators and air conditioners. • Minimize the Use of Vehicles. • Use Eco-friendly Cleaning Products. • Prohibiting use of Nitrous Oxide. • Buy local products.
  8. 8. Conclusion There is no doubt that the problem of ozone depletion exists and deserves extensive research and attention. With the release of each CFC, our ozone layer takes one small step towards its destruction. The entire world must unite in order to expel this problem forever.
  9. 9. Thank you
