Six groups were formed to work out design strategies involving the
pedestrian piazzas in sector 17. Each group was allowed to choose
any part of the main piazza from their point of view was important
and also related problems with facades, activities, parking,
landscaping etc.
One group focused on the working of main chowk, i.e. the one having
proposed multi-storied building forming the landmark.
They wanted the multi-storied building to be there, the place lacks
focus and intended landmark if were to come up as proposed would
really activate the area.
They proposed large landmark metal sculpture built in concrete and
steel to make up for the loss of the multi-storied building.
Second point of their emphasis was pedestrian connection to the Rose
Garden by way of over bridge on the Jan Marg. Similar connections
were proposed towards northeast over Madhya Marg, southest over
Himalaya Marg and southwest over Udyog Marg.
They overruled the over bridge over the piazza and instead proposed
that to be the open stage overlooking the piazza, and making that
area more active.
They proposed Indian bazaars in the area around there.
Second group proposed the reworking of main piazza with change in
flooring pattern, landscaping concept on more regular and geometric
concept.
They proposed unification of piazzas lying northwest and southeast of

the neelam piazza by cutting down the parking area.
They proposed intensive landscaping on northwest end of the unified
piazza and on the southeast area a large stage for fashion ramp and
exhibition etc. which could be raised and lowered mechanically.
Third group insisted the main piazza to be hard piazza with no
distraction like sitting areas and introduction of special areas for
city’s youth on the upper floors bordering the Neelam piazza;
activities such as bowling alleys, clubs dance floors, discos etc. This
will allow more activities on the upper floors after dark in the area.
Also the piazza connecting the neelam piazza on the southeast side
to have Infinity Pool, large water body as main point of interest on
that side.
Fourth group proposed introduction of spherical objects on the piazza
as points of reference all over the piazza as landscape features.
These spheres will act as seating points, street furniture, waste
collection points, lighting features, etc.
They also proposed parking in the piazzas on the northeast side in the
basement by having circular cut outs for natural light and also
providing shade by planning trees.
Fifth group gave ideas of increased piazzas on southeast and
northwest of neelam piazza by doing away with the parking there.
More activities such outdoor eateries and curious kiosks could be
introduced. Also they were of the opinion to have more green on the
side wings of the neelam piazza.
Sixth group had ideas, more or less repeatedly emphasizing more
landscaping, infusing the piazzas with more colorful floor scape,
large water sculptures at strategic positions and e.g. one in front of
Neelam. Also doing away with Neelam and instead to upgrade it with

multiplex so that more people can participate from inside of the
complex.

Introduction:
Chandigarh, the planned city, lays utmost emphasis on pedestrian use
of spaces in terms of scale and other principles. It has ushered in new
terminology in planning of built environment in the city designed by
Le Corbusier, architect and planner of Chandigarh, the capitol
complex where piazzas connect built forms, and other areas the lake
where a large promenade plays a significant part, the piazzas in
sector 17 also displays a similar concept.
Le Corbusier’s attempts at comprehending scale at urban level have
been achieved through piazzas. As such the role of piazzas in this
context needs to be studied.
The city center hence becomes a total public domain where

http://joint123workshop.blogspot.in/2008/ 8/10
pedestrian movement is most dominant factor in planning. In fact the
two major axes in sector-17 are piazzas-centric with building blocks
kept as guiding tools.
In light of the basic concept of piazzas in sector-17 it becomes
imperative to study its functioning in the present scenario. The city is
not only serving administrative functions but also it has become hub
of new activities such as Information Technology Park, changing land-
use patterns in various districts and periphery areas; expanding the
use of shopping malls and multiplexes. Sector-17 is also the hub of
social interaction of the city’s people.
Objective:
To redevelop the existing sector-17 piazzas in light of the changing
aspirations, needs and usages of the visitors.
Intent:
· To familiarize the students with problems connected in designing
public domain in Indian context.
· To make them aware of Indian climate and its role in built
environment· To bring about public participatory action plan
· To understand planning issues emerging from the cultural
differences, sense of place, etc.
- To enhance visual focal points and nodal areas.
- To enhance aesthetic impact.
Design Problem:
The issues pertaining to sector-17 piazzas need to be studied as
below:
· To study the existing pattern in terms of urban design principles;
axes, scale, orientation and city center functions.
· To assess problems with respect to location aspects of the piazzas.
· To invigorate piazzas in terms of activity in different periods.
· To analyze pedestrian movement with respect to vehicular traffic·
To study the problems of parking.
· To study the climatic aspect, orientation, building materials and
services
· To emphasize the role of street furniture, signage, lighting and
landscaping.
· To assess the public amenities and services, vendor machines,

public assistance, security structures.
· To study the usage of piazzas in festival seasons.
- To study feasibility of having outdoor cafes/ eateries etc.
Methodology:
- To sensitize the students with the problem through expert-lectures
- To assist the study through library resources- To assess the problem
by visiting sites
- To establish connection with traditional planning by visiting
Manimajra (old)
- To compare the present system with the historical examples such as
Fatehpur Sikri, Jaipur
.To compare the piazzas with La Defense area in Paris and other
examples.
To evolve interaction with the design faculty in the total process.
To evolve design strategies with regard to problems studied.
Scope:
Above design problem is to be presented in groups studying various
aspects of piazzas as being discussed above.
There will be six groups working in the design problem in various
issues.
The study will be in following stages:
a) Expert lectures on various aspects of the topic
b) Familiarization of site conditions by site visits
c) Presentation of study of various aspects as discussed above
d) To work out design strategies in studio
e) Presentation of the strategies formed
Note: Detailed schedule of work, resourse person and site
information are attached.
