This shows direct current and voltage connections to the Data Acquisition System (in
this example shown as a Power Analyzer). For higher power motors, bringing the
current and voltage signals to the DAS introduces personnel safety concerns as well as
increasing coupling and cross-talk from long connection cables.

To avoid the Personnel and Equipment Safety issues created by bringing high voltage
and high current cables out of the Motor Test Cell to the Data Acquisition System, it is
appropriate to use electrically isolated Voltage and Current Transducers located at the
measurement points and bring the desired signals out at low voltage and current.
Minimizing the length and spacing of the high voltage and high current cables also
reduces the capacitive cross-talk, magnetic cross-talk and noise coupling into the signal
cables.

The waveforms for a high power drive are similar with typical peak voltages to about
±400V having rise and fall times of <0.1µs, and currents to about ±500A and
fundamental frequency from dc to about 500Hz. In this example, the current (green)
waveform frequency is about 57Hz. The “spikes” on the current waveform are probably
not real. They are likely to be noise or cross-talk coupled from the very high dV/dt in
the voltage waveform.

The frequency content of the Voltage waveform is broadly distributed and can extend
to high frequencies. If rise and fall times are approximately 50ns, the Voltage spectrum
can extend to 6MHz. Since a motor winding is substantially inductive, the current rise
and fall times are limited and hence the “real” harmonic content in the current
waveform is limited. Note in particular that there are “noise” harmonics in the current
spectrum at at the same frequency as the high amplitude harmonics in the voltage
spectrum.

The instantaneous power transferred in any pair of leads to a load is the product of the
instantaneous voltage by the instantaneous current.
It may be that at certain times the voltage and current will have different signs implying
power is being transferred from the load back to the source.
The average power transferred to the load can be obtained by integrating the
instantaneous power over a given number of cycles. This integration must be
performed simultaneously for the electrical power into the drive, the electrical power
into the motor and the mechanical power into the load.
From this it can be appreciated that the time delay introduced by the Voltage and
Current Transducers must be small and independent of the shape of the waveform.

The real 𝑖 𝑛 harmonic on the phase current from a Drive to a Motor becomes low by
𝑖 𝑛~20 or less. But the high dV/dt on the Motor cables can couple into the current
signal line to give false 𝑖 𝑛 harmonics at higher frequency that are partially in phase with
𝑣 𝑛 (𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑛 ≠ 0) harmonics to give a non-negligible value to a false 𝑣 𝑛 ∙ 𝑖 𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑛
contribution to 𝑃𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙. For accurate power measurement it is essential to minimize
cross-talk from the high dV/dt on the power cables into the current transducer signal.

With low frequency primary current, the induced voltage is negligible. Even if the
frequency is increased to 1.5kHz and the loop area is increased to 1000mm2 by, e.g.,
having a long common lead to the Burden Resistor, the field induced “false” current
signal is only about 10µV. Compare this with the “false” current signal arising from
capacitive coupling of up to 1000mV. It is still important to minimize the area of high
current loops since the magnetic field may induce current in very large loops formed by
safety grounds.

Accurate Power Conversion Measurements on High Power Motor Drives

  • 2. This shows direct current and voltage connections to the Data Acquisition System (in this example shown as a Power Analyzer). For higher power motors, bringing the current and voltage signals to the DAS introduces personnel safety concerns as well as increasing coupling and cross-talk from long connection cables. 2

To avoid the Personnel and Equipment Safety issues created by bringing high voltage and high current cables out of the Motor Test Cell to the Data Acquisition System, it is appropriate to use electrically isolated Voltage and Current Transducers located at the measurement points and bring the desired signals out at low voltage and current. Minimizing the length and spacing of the high voltage and high current cables also reduces the capacitive cross-talk, magnetic cross-talk and noise coupling into the signal cables. 3

The waveforms for a high power drive are similar with typical peak voltages to about ±400V having rise and fall times of <0.1µs, and currents to about ±500A and fundamental frequency from dc to about 500Hz. In this example, the current (green) waveform frequency is about 57Hz. The “spikes” on the current waveform are probably not real. They are likely to be noise or cross-talk coupled from the very high dV/dt in the voltage waveform. 4
  • 5. The frequency content of the Voltage waveform is broadly distributed and can extend to high frequencies. If rise and fall times are approximately 50ns, the Voltage spectrum can extend to 6MHz. Since a motor winding is substantially inductive, the current rise and fall times are limited and hence the “real” harmonic content in the current waveform is limited. Note in particular that there are “noise” harmonics in the current spectrum at at the same frequency as the high amplitude harmonics in the voltage spectrum. 5
  • 6. The instantaneous power transferred in any pair of leads to a load is the product of the instantaneous voltage by the instantaneous current. It may be that at certain times the voltage and current will have different signs implying power is being transferred from the load back to the source. The average power transferred to the load can be obtained by integrating the instantaneous power over a given number of cycles. This integration must be performed simultaneously for the electrical power into the drive, the electrical power into the motor and the mechanical power into the load. From this it can be appreciated that the time delay introduced by the Voltage and Current Transducers must be small and independent of the shape of the waveform. 6
  • 7. The real 𝑖 𝑛 harmonic on the phase current from a Drive to a Motor becomes low by 𝑖 𝑛~20 or less. But the high dV/dt on the Motor cables can couple into the current signal line to give false 𝑖 𝑛 harmonics at higher frequency that are partially in phase with 𝑣 𝑛 (𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑛 ≠ 0) harmonics to give a non-negligible value to a false 𝑣 𝑛 ∙ 𝑖 𝑛 𝑐𝑜𝑠𝜃 𝑛 contribution to 𝑃𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙. For accurate power measurement it is essential to minimize cross-talk from the high dV/dt on the power cables into the current transducer signal. 7

  • 14. With low frequency primary current, the induced voltage is negligible. Even if the frequency is increased to 1.5kHz and the loop area is increased to 1000mm2 by, e.g., having a long common lead to the Burden Resistor, the field induced “false” current signal is only about 10µV. Compare this with the “false” current signal arising from capacitive coupling of up to 1000mV. It is still important to minimize the area of high current loops since the magnetic field may induce current in very large loops formed by safety grounds. 14
