2. Concept
The concept of my video will involve a breakup between a boy and a girl. This is
different to the usual songs about breakup which are about the protagonists
relationship, because the relationship is between the protagonists best friend
and another girl. It will also involve a third character I have named Depression. It
will be a person dressed in a black morphsuit or in dark clothing with a plain
black mask, which is supposed to represent Depression of the friend. Throughout
the video the protagonist/singer will be trying to help his friend get through his
situation and get over the depression. This will visually be shown by the friend
eventually discarding the Depression character toward the end of the video. I
will structure the video with a basic beginning, middle and end. At the beginning
I plan to have a two shot where it displays the friend and the girl. The girl will
either walk out of shot or turn away from the friend, which signifies the break
up. Then will begin the middle section of the song as the depression affects the
friend and the protagonist tries to help him. At the end the situation becomes
resolved and the friend manages to escape the grasp of depression. I may keep
the colour palette at quite a dull grey for the video and perhaps change it to a
brighter palette as the friend sees the brightness in his life.
3. Narrative
My video is going to be fully narrative with the only aspect of performance being
the protagonist lip synching to either the camera at times or directly to the
friend. There will be no other performance such as the band playing. In my video
the main focus will be on the protagonist interacting with his friend and trying to
help him through his troubles. I could add in shots that hint to the notion of
looking by shooting the characters looking out of the camera frame then cutting
to that on my next shot. The narrative will involve the timeline I mentioned in
the Concept section where the break up happens, then the depression and then
the resolution towards the end of the video. The friend will portray a lot of
emotion through facial features, as well as body language. The body language
will be droopy and negative to show how much of an affect the break up has
been on him. The protagonist could show frustrated body language at the parts
of the song he is pleading with the friend to show him the positive side of things.
Themes - Companionship
One theme in my video is going to be companionship. The protagonist sticks by
his friend at all times and tries his best to help him through what he is going
through. He doesn't give up at any point and eventually fixes the situation. I will
represent this by having the two friends close by at most times in the video, and
a lot of genuine facial expressions toward one another. I can also represent
companionship by having them touch each others arms or be in close proximity.
Themes – Love & Heartbreak
Another theme that will be present in my video is love and heartbreak. I will try
to encapsulate the emotions that these things create with the acting of the friend
in the video. I can represent the theme of love and heartbreak by showing facial
expressions of the character that gets broken up with to show the genuine
emotion caused by a breakup. Another way I can represent this theme is showing
body language of the friend throughout the video and showing the effect it can
have on someone. I will also represent this theme through the character
4. Depression as a metaphor for the feelings someone could go through in a tough
breakup.
Camera and Editing
I will have a lot of varied shots in my video. A lot of my shots are going to be
medium close ups of the two main characters, the singer and his friend. I will
have a lot of medium close ups to show the lip synching clearly and the
interaction between the two. I will use some angled shots to try and portray
emotion with the camera. These will involve high or low angles. I will use a lot of
slow pans or tilts going over the two characters faces to show emotion and lip
synching. During the shots when they are outside I will use establishing shots
and wide shots. These will set the scene and represent the emptiness which the
friend is feeling. For editing, I will try and use a lot of thought beats to make the
music video appealing to anyone. I will not use a lot of editing, just cutting to
other shots when I need to.
Lighting
The lighting in the video could often be low key to match the colour pallette and
general mood of the video. I can change to brighter and harsher lighting when
the situation becomes resolved towards the end of the music video. I will try to
film outside when it is not too bright, just a dull and grey day. This will help
5. capture the mood of the song and the friends emotions. I may try to film the
ending on a much brighter and sunnier day.
Mise en Scene
The mise en scene for the characters clothing will just be normal everyday
clothing apart from the Depression character which I will dress in black clothing
with a black mask, or perhaps the morphsuit. Shots will be inside of the
protagonists house and outside. This will create a sense that this is just an
everyday rut that they are going through, it is normal. This will make the video a
lot more realistic and make the audience relate to it on a personal level.
