We are pleased to share our activities and updates from 2020. Our staff, partners, and members are diverse, creative, and driven by passion and commitment. We strive to ensure our projects and programmes across the globe are engaging, impactful, and contextually relevant.
“This gathering of human and non-human beings has never happened before and will never happen again.” - Charles Eisenstein, GEN Online Summit.
As GEN celebrated our 25th year in 2020, and all the contributions that lead us here, no one could imagine the uncertainty the world would face. While gathering the stories and data to showcase our accomplishments for the year, we felt an enhanced sense of gratitude for the abundance within our members and collaborators. As a network and organisation, our resilience was tested and proven, and like a diverse ecosystem, we navigated challenges with creativity, flexibility, and solidarity. We were truly pressed to practice the ecovillage principles, particularly "clarifying vision and higher purpose" as well as "listen to the feedback of the world." We believe our Annual Report reflects this and are pleased to share it with you here.
Our Vision and Mission remain the same, as do many of our core frameworks. And we remain open to evolving how we serve these, how we work together, and how we understand our impact. Read the invitation for celebration from our passionate and committed President of the Board. Read the reflection and re-focusing from the Focus Area Directors of the GEN International team. Notice how we exceeded some of our targets (particularly the number of communities we reach out to and the number of online learning participants we engaged with). And learn how our restructuring process is re-shaping our work.
In a year of restricted travel, we maintained our global focus through collaborating with partners in all regions, through the Twinning Project, Hildur Jackson Award, BLAST, GAMER, Green Economy, Ecovillage Transition in Action, Ecovillage Schools, and Research. We continued to showcase stories from the network in our Online Summit. And our volunteers and Ambassadors networks grew and strengthened.
You can also read about our priorities for 2021 and join us on the journey back 25 years, to celebrate all that shaped who we are today. As always, we invite you to dive into each of the regions' highlights as well. Representatives from GEN Africa welcomed well-earned recognition for several awards in 2020 and infused energy into the Pan African Ecovillage Development Programme. CASA Latina held an enriching and regenerative annual meeting and embraced online learning opportunities with several collaborative education projects. GEN Europe followed suit in the online world, creatively adapting their in-person gathering to an incredible array of online engagement workshops, as well as launching a Connect and Create course and Communities of Hope documentary.

2. The Global Ecovillage Network is a growing and
evolving international network of regenerative
communities and initiatives. 2020, our 25th year of
existence, saw us go through several changes, in how
we are organised, meet new challenges, and refine
and recommit to our purpose of spreading ecovillage
living through supporting communities and individuals
design and implement their own pathways to a
regenerative future.
This year’s Annual Report presents the activities,
impact, vision and mission of GEN and the
organisations that make up the key parts of our
network - the GEN regions and GEN International. The
content of is organised in different sections to ease
your reading.
We first provide an overview of GEN and our
core frameworks, key performance indicators,
and highlights of the year. We then share the
accomplishments from GEN’s five Regions and
NextGEN, our youth arm, celebrating the wealth of
action and cultural diversity of the journey towards
low impact, regenerative lifestyles around the planet.
We hope you will enjoy the journey through 2020

INTRODUCTION TABLE OF CONTENTS
3. Letter from President of the Board of Trustees
Dear General Assembly,
Thisletterisdedicatedtoyou,intheconfigurationoftheCircleofGuardiansoftheNetwork.Youare
themostimportantmeetingspaceoftheNetworkandyouaretheorganwiththegreatestpowerof
theorganisationthattodayhasthehonourofbeingtheglobalrepresentativeofourvoices.
At the time of writing this letter, we are preparing to elect a new Board of Trustees for GEN
International and, once again, this organisation will be in your hands and you will decide the team
that will be responsible for taking care of its viability and accompanying the brilliant global team.
Such responsibility of the GA, was at the same level of importance as the choice we
made together to respond to the challenges and changes with a participatory process for
restructuring, which has yielded results that continue to emerge as we walk the implementation
of a participatory governance and mixed strategies for financial sustainability. Many details of
the current status and future possibilities of the organisation will be shared by the wonderful
team of Interim Trustees in their official report. You will see more details of what has been
achieved during 2020 in here.
However, what remains to be seen will be the potential of the interactions that the Circle
of Guardians of the Network can foster, with the help of the Global Team, to achieve those
collaborations that help us to continue promoting lifestyles in common-unity. Because even
2020 has been a year of challenging circumstances and structural transformations, for GEN, for
our nations and for the planet, who among us has had the good fortune to be grateful for having
decided on a lifestyle that promotes exactly that…life? How much more can we contribute to the
world from the exercise of being: being communities, being ecovillages, being sustainable and
regenerative settlements?
So let’s see what we did together in 2020. Let’s celebrate the love, conviction and dedication of
the leaders, funders and supporters who have left and those who will remain for an announced
time. Let’s celebrate the previous Board of Trustees and the current dedicated Interim Board.
Let’s celebrate the Global Team and their courageous spirit. Let’s celebrate the outgoing
General Assembly and the entire global network family that made possible the voices of
those living examples of community and regeneration
that the Global Team can amplify today.
Let’s celebrate the emerging vision of GEN as a living organism,
Jennifer Trujillo Obando
4. Letter from Directors
Dear Readers,
In 2020, the world rapidly changed with the impact that Covid-19 had and still has on our daily
lives and communities. GEN too, went through big changes, stepping into a process of network-
wide inquiry, re-visioning and transformation of who we are, our ways of working, and our
impact in the world.
With Kosha Joubert leaving the role of Executive Director of GEN International after years of
deep dedication, passion and vision for the network, the impact of COVID-19, the increasing
urgency of global challenges, and questions about GEN’s structure and strategy, we decided to
go on a quest - tuning into our vision and purpose together as a network, seeking new ground,
direction and inspiration for GEN’s future impact, structures, strategy and relationship with
partner organisations.
As part of the changes, a leadership circle took on the role of steering GEN International
together, hand in hand with the Board of Trustees. We also renewed our commitment to
• Embrace a network-based approach in how GEN operates
• Grow self-sustaining financial activities throughout the network to resource the transition
and support a shift to regenerative economies
• Deepen our exploration of shared governance, collaborative culture, and how we can
embody our values in our everyday working and organising.
We remain dedicated to the ecovillage model of holistic and community-led sustainable
development, focusing our energy to support new and existing ecovillages to thrive and serve as
diverse models of regeneration, build and scale skills and capacity for regenerative, community-
based living through education and collaboration, and grow the size, solidarity and voice of our
network and the larger movement for a transition to a regenerative, just, and peaceful world.
Now is the time to experiment and implement. We invite
you to join us on this mission in the coming year!
Warmly,
Anna Kovasna, Esther Hirsch & Gabriel Siqueira
5. Ecovillages embrace the concept of
‘luxurious simplicity’, celebrating and
recreating low impact lifestyles that expand
a sense of care, responsibility and well being.
Thousand of ecovillages around the planet
are already demonstrating how we can
transition to a fully sustainable future.
The community-based capacity for
implementation of the Sustainable
Development Goals and Climate Change
Agreement can be unleashed to establish
regional and national programs to support
ecovillage development.
An Ecovillage is an intentional or traditional
community that is consciously designed
through locally owned, participatory
processes to regenerate their social and
natural environments.

AN ECOVILLAGE IS AN INTENTIONAL OR
TRADITIONAL COMMUNITY THAT IS CONSCIOUSLY
DESIGNED THROUGH LOCALLY OWNED,
PARTICIPATORY PROCESSES TO REGENERATE THEIR
SOCIAL AND NATURAL ENVIRONMENTS.
GEN works through five broad regional organisations
and our youth movement.
7. HOW WE WORK TOGETHER
During 2020, the Global Ecovillage Network deepened
our exploration of shared governance and collaborative
leadership. During the second half of the year, we shifted
from having an Executive Director to a Directors’ Circle, with
the leads of our five areas stewarding the overall strategy and
financial well-being of the organisation together, and sharing
the responsibilities previously held by one person. With clearer
domains and responsibilities for different teams and a new
participatory approach to budgeting, our aim is to build an
even more collaborative culture in our team and network. The
organisation is still in transition, and we have new pathways
and structures ahead in 2021.

GEN has spread inspiration and knowledge about the
ecovillage concept for the past 25 years. All ecovillages
are started from local leadership and, if at all, GEN
comes in to support and honour local participatory
design processes.
GEN distills tools, builds capacity, and celebrates the
results of the incredible work tens of thousands of
people are doing in their communities on the ground.

SCALE ECOVILLAGE SOLUTIONS VERTICALLY
AND HORIZONTALLY THROUGH FIVE
ECOVILLAGE PROGRAMMES
GEN scales out ecovillage solutions through its
five ecovillage programmes: Ecovillage Incubation,
Ecovillage Development, Eco Schools for Eco
Communities, EmerGENcies and Urban Eco
Communities, in order to support governments and
regional authorities in the implementation.
Because of COVID, travel and courses could not
happen as planned, preventing the implementation
of onsite programmes.
16. 2020 RESTRUCTURING PROCESS
In April 2020 GEN appointed a Restructuring
Team to engage with everyone in GEN
and with our stakeholders, and to bring
back recommendations for GEN’s future
development, leadership, structures, financial
strategy and relationship with our sister
organisation Gaia Education.
The group designed a process through
which the whole network could explore
and synthesise the purpose, strategy, self-
sustaining financial models, structure and
culture of GEN. The aims were to:
• Increase impact and action for community-
led change, resilience and regeneration
• Foster a culture of creativity, innovation,
mutual care, and empowerment.
• Build more capacity for self-organisation,
co-creation and co-ownership of GEN
The outcomes included a new governance
structure for the network and GEN
International, new shared leadership models, a
renewal of commitment to our network-wide
purpose and vision for the future, clarity on the
roles and responsibilities of network members,
a focus on self-sustaining financial activities to
sustainably and ethically resource activities at all
levels, new ways of onboarding new members,
and systems to keep nurturing a culture of trust,
collaboration and celebration in our work and
our actions in the world.
As we close the year of 2020, we enter a period
of prototyping and active reflection and learning
as we start to implement these changes - always
with our wider impact and role in the world in
sight, and with our shared purpose at heart - to
facilitate the transition towards regenerative
cultures by innovating, showcasing, educating
and advocating for people and communities
everywhere to design and implement holistic
pathways to a regenerative future, and to
connect, support and amplify the voice of
ecovillages around the world.
17. OPERATIONS/FINANCES:
Healthy operations and financial management sits
at the core of GEN International and is responsible
for ensuring all legal requirements, human
resource processes and organisational systems.
The focus of this area was threefold in 2020:
• Improvement of existing and implementation
of new organisational systems to support the
team and organisation in overall coordination,
team communication and task management.
• Development of the GEN Volunteer
Programme to build a community of volunteers
for our international organisation - engagement
of 25 in all Focus Areas of GEN. In addition to
that, GEN was running an European Solidarity
Corps (ESC) programme with 5 participants
from Germany, Portugal & Italy.
• The Fundraising Area carried out an
assessment of GEN’s Fundraising activities
including an analyses of the income streams,
update of the database of foundations and
trusts to identify possible funding opportunities
and exploration of new fundraising tools.
This assessment is building the base of GEN’s
fundraising strategy 2021-2024.
Online Store:
We reviewed our current partnerships and
collaborations with organisations as well
as individuals in our network, adding new
books and learning materials for regenerative
community building. We also made more of
our products available for digital download,
improving the accessibility and affordability of
our educational materials.
GEN also launched the new edition of the
Ecovillage Design Cards in several versions,
now including links with the UN Sustainable
Development Goals and the Ecovillage Impact
Assessment. These are available in the GEN
Online Store in 10 different languages, for digital
download or as hard copies.
WHAT WE DID IN 2020
18. EDUCATION, CONSULTANCY
& RESEARCH
GEN Education entered 2020 with several
face-to-face courses in Regenerative
Community Design and How to Start an
Ecovillage on offer globally.
After successfully piloting our new ecovillage
Game of Regeneration for youth with 35
participants, the pandemic hit, we had to cancel
courses on 4 continents, and quickly pivoted to
offer online trainings instead.
In terms of learning materials, we completed
the new edition of the Ecovillage Design Cards,
including versions linking directly to the United
Nations Sustainable Development Goals and
the new Ecovillage Impact Assessment. We also
created online modes of working with the cards
to support reflection, learning and community
development.
SPOTLIGHT: Launch of Fully Featured Online
Learning Platform
In March 2020 we launched the GEN Academy,
with the goals of sharing knowledge, inspiration,
and expertise within our network with a wider
audience, provide a platform for ecovillage
educators, and a space to learn directly from and
with the diverse and living examples of community-
led regeneration that make up GEN.
Hosted by GEN International, this online platform
aims to gather and showcase cutting edge
ecovillage-based education, virtual and face-
to-face, within the GEN Networks in one place.
Through core GEN offers and partnerships with
facilitators and experts from our network, we strive
to increase:
• Visibility - for ecovillages, related projects,
GEN Regions & GEN
• Reach & Accessibility - less travel & expenses,
more flexibility
• Diversity & Representation - more voices,
faces & languages
• Income generation for trainers, ecovillages
and GEN nodes.
With 2020 not allowing for in-person events, the
platform hosted 15 online learning opportunities,
including short webinars and a 6-month learning
journey, hosted facilitators from all GEN Regions,
and welcomed almost 1,500 participants from all
regions. We also started conversations with GEN
Regions for use of the platform.
WHAT WE DID IN 2020
19. EDUCATION, CONSULTANCY
& RESEARCH
Broadening the scope of our activities, we also
engaged actively with urban ecovillages and
schools applying an ecovillage approach, resulting
in an Urban Ecovillages manual, online course and
published book chapter.
GEN includes creative educators bringing
ecovillage principles and methodologies to formal
and informal learning environments. The tools
and insights can be applied by formal educators in
traditional classrooms, informal youth facilitators
in diverse learning environments, as well as
community-based initiatives.
Highlighting the learnings from ReSCOPE and
GEN’s Greening Schools Programme, we hosted 2
online sessions, welcoming over 200 participants
and produced a comprehensive Manual which
showcased the approaches and applications.
We began to facilitate the emergence of a
Community of Practice for ecovillage education
focused on schools, youth and children. This
network of 15 partners will continue to explore
the interconnections between schools and
communities, and how ecovillage principles can be
applied in the most diverse contexts.
Consultancy saw an increase in interest, with new
entry level calls proving popular. Focus was mainly
on supporting new ecovillage initiatives, and on
larger-scale Ecovillage Development Programmes,
where the team together with GEN Africa created
several project partnerships and proposals.
Throughout the year, the team also worked on
creating closer collaboration and joint strategy
with Gaia Education, our sister organisation.

The aim was to increase the sharing of data and
experiences, to identify gaps in knowledge and
opportunities for collaboration, and to map and
systematize research on ecovillages and related
topics. We facilitated interaction and constructive
dialogue where researchers presented their work,
followed by a group discussion with approximately
50 people each.
WHAT WE DID IN 2020
20. NETWORKING & OUTREACH
Ambassadors
* 2 global webinars, 5 regional ambassadors
webinars
* self-organised Community of Practice
* progress of automating the ambassador
enrolment process;
Friends of GEN - launched a new campaign called

community projects around the world, through a
profile featuring their history, goals, and current
status (including if they are open to new members
or volunteers).
It helps to enable interested people to connect
with the projects, and showcase the network as
a unified movement. In 2020, we cleaned up the
back-end, improving the ecovillage form and the
map to include the networks and the ecovillages
connected to them; Liaised with Regions to align
with their databases.
WHAT WE DID IN 2020
21. COMMUNICATIONS
Communications acts as the connective thread of
GEN to the outside world to promote GEN’s values
and ideals to ecovillage friends and allies around
the world. Content created from the heart of the
ecovillage movement, strong imagery, compelling
narratives and solid data that brings evidence of
our impact. Ultimately, it is cultivating and curating
best practices, and sharing highlights to connect
communities for a more sustainable world.
Strategic integration of communication channels
- adopted a more integrated approach to our
website and social media. We also focused more
on storytelling. This resulted in impressive growth
across our conversion funnel, starting with our
social media channels - 78% growth in comparison
with 2019-, that led to a 57% growth of website
qualified accesses this year, finally generating a
46% increase in newsletter subscribers in 2020.
Monthly Newsletter - experimented with a new
format, with structured sections and an editorial
intro. Each month we highlight a GEN Region,
an Ambassador, an Ecovillage, ours and partners
upcoming events and job openings.
Communities on Edge video series - showcasing
inspiring, practical experiences and successes
from ecovillages, communities, and eco-projects
from all over the world. This is the first stepo into
exploring more our youtube channel and videos.
Design - developed manuals,Ecovillage Design
Cards, and decentralized demand by adopting a
shared collaborative tool for design online, Canva.
Supported and promoted events - for GEN
and partners including the Collective Trauma
Summit, Fantastic Fungi documentary,
Ecosystem Restoration Camps, Permaculture
Magazine, Ecovillage Podcast.
WHAT WE DID IN 2020
22. INFORMATION AND TECHNOLOGY
GEN IT provide digital systems and platforms to
the GEN Regions, ecovillages and people of the

24. ONLINE SUMMIT 2020
Our second Online Summit ‘Communities
for Future - Our Response to the Climate
Emergency’ welcomed 21.000 participants
in February 2020.
A consortium of 30 leading edge thinkers,
activists, and grassroots leaders shared
insights for the transformation of
systems towards a community-led and
regenerative future.
Over 171 hubs organised events in
communities, ecovillages, education centers,
farms, institutions and private homes, in 51
countries. The video series ‘Climate Fact and
Climate Action Challenge’ presented various
climate facts and inspired the participants to
take concrete actions that make an positive
change and impact in the world.

‘Thank you for an incredible summit. I watched all the
videos. The depth of conversation around climate change
was unlike anything I’ve experienced elsewhere.’
25. VOLUNTEERS
In 2020 GEN International hosted 5 long-term
European Solidarity Corps (ESC) participants at
the office in Findhorn, Scotland. The Erasmus+
programme, funded by the European Commission,
enables GEN to support young people who share
our vision of a world of empowered citizens and
communities to develop skills and experience
in projects, work in an international team, and
gain communication and cooperation tools -
empowering them as lifelong leaders. Based in
the Findhorn Foundation & Community, they also
witness and experience the life of sustainability,
and social cooperation that ecovillages model.
ESC
GEN also launched an expanded programme for
the many people interested in volunteering in our
online and remote work. From market strategists
to designers, translators to researchers, we receive
invaluable support in our mission. This program is
designed to grow and strengthen that community of
volunteer, and supports GEN in fulfilling our purpose
to build more capacity for the whole network. It
also gives individuals the opportunity to gain more
insights and involvement within GEN and the
architecture of GEN as an organisation.

26. BLAST
Launched in autumn 2019, BLAST is an
ECOLISE-led partnership to build capacity for
Blended Adult Learning for the Social-ecological
Transition. Here, the GEN Education Team works
with others to strengthen cross-movement
capacity to offer blended transformative
learning, to create better pathways between
education in different movements, and to
strengthen the European Community of Practice
for transformative education.
During 2020, the project team was busy
developing a Community of Practice guide, a set
of tools and methods for blended transformative
learning, and a framework for competencies
needed. Because of COVID, no trainings,
meetings or events could be held, but online
collaboration was lively, and also included an in-
depth look at Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in
all our work and offers.
GAMER
Running since May 2018, Eco GAMER is a GEN
Education-led youth project working with
GEN Europe, Damanhur Education, SEKEM
Development Foundation and the University of
Lisbon. The aim is to increase capacity to meeasure
the impact of ecovillages, and gamify the process
of ecovillage and social enterprise design in a form
that is fun and dynamic.
Early in 2020 the partnership hosted a pilot
training for facilitators of the new the game of
ReGENeration - a live action game exploring
ecovillages, personal development, and the
journey of project design through hands on
activities, theatre, storytelling and more - all
folded into an immersive myth and character
development. The game now exists as a set of
resources for facilitators to play the live game, as
well as instructions and tools for a shorter table-
top version.

27. ECOVILLAGE TRANSITION
IN ACTION
This GEN Education partnership with GEN
Germany, ECOLISE and Hurdal/Kilden
focusses on scaling ecovillages through better
collaboration between community led initiatives
(CLIs) and local governments. We started the
year with a a Peer 2 Peer Training in Ecovillage
Transition Methodologies. Collaboration then
moved online, with several Online Project
Meetings to consolidate learnings and strategise
next steps.
As a contribution to the launch of the ECOLISE
flagship programme, Communities for Future and
the European Day for Sustainable Communities
2020 the webinar: “Strengthening collaboration
between community-led initiatives and
local authorities for regional sustainability”
invited guests to highlight innovations in local
and regional cooperation between CLIs and
municipalities. Attended by more than 70 people
from diverse stakeholder groups, it fed into
the official launch of Communities for Future,
attended by several Members of the European
Parliament
The team also contributed to the Online
European Ecovillage Gathering: What If?
Ecovillage Solutions for Extraordinary Times,
with a workshop on “Scaling-Up Regeneration:
Ingredients for Successful Community-
Municipality Collaborations” reflecting together
on the ingredients that enable successful
community-municipality collaborations.
LEADER
Based in Moray, North East Scotland, the Moray
Ecovillage Development Project was the Moray
LEADER-Funded transnational learning exchange,
and community development project between
3 Showcase Scottish communities and two
international ecovillages Kilden (Hurdal, Norway)
& Schloss Tonndorf (Germany). GEN (grant
holder) was joined by local partners, tsiMORAY, in
delivering the project.
Running from March 2019 - December 2020, the
overall project aim was to incubate ecovillage
development in at least 3 Moray communities
towards meeting Moray LEADER Local
Development Strategy (LDS) objectives around:
1. Social entrepreneurship, 2. Local food supply
chains, 3. Local tourism, 4. Energy efficiency and
renewable energy.
Despite COVID-19, the project was a success
and created multiple, long-term benefits for the
communities that were trained and mentored.
FUNDED PROJECTS 2020
28. GREEN ECONOMY
In partnership with ReScope, the project
provided training and guidance to support
the set up of 8 social enterprise groups in
communities in Zambia. Activities and capacity
building focused on village banking, production
of value-added crops such as essential oils,
rocket stoves, and natural building. Responding
to the COVID19 pandemic, training and
ongoing support continued online, including
3 webinars highlighting project partners to a
wider audience.
RIVER OF LIFE
The program “The River of Life” is an ongoing
global program in GEN with the motto “Women
supporting women”: Women enable other women
to work directly in their communities, strengthen
their social fabric and thereby the ecosystem as
well as the local economy. River of Life provides
financial support to exceptionally strong women
in Africa, Asia and Latin America over a certain
period of time, to help shift their communities in a
regenerative direction.
These women use the funds as a livelihood for
their community work: they start community
gardens, develop ecovillage programs, get
involved in greening schools and start community-
based peace and nature conservation initiatives.
They work at the local level, but also at the
regional and national levels, to network work and
link communities, projects and solutions. In 2020,
GEN supported 4 women through individual
donations and grant funding.
FUNDED PROJECTS 2020
29. HILDUR JACKSON AWARD
The Hildur Jackson Award is a special accolade
in GEN, that recognises initiatives in the network
that bring the most impactful inspiration about
ecovillages and ecovillage projects to a broad
audience. In 2020, GEN welcomed a record
number of 70 applicants from 29 countries, adding
many new projects to our global map. From the 15
shortlisted initiatives, we celebrated incredible
geographic and thematic diversity. The award was
presented to Trans Indus (TI) Ecovillage in India
for their inspiring and dedicated restoration work
of the land they are custodians of. By working to
restore the Earth, they also healed and restored
human relationships.
TWINNING
Ecovillage Twinning has been happening in
GEN for many years, with mutual benefits and
long lasting friendships. The 2020 Twinning
Project is the first time that there has been
systematization of this process, with learnings
harvested from previous twins and the
creation of opportunities to connect those
ecovillages, eco-communities, eco-projects
and ecovillage networks from across various
regions to build twinning relationships.
Communities that have been part of this
process have been deeply inspired and
motivated by their twin, especially in these
times of great uncertainty.
The GEN Twinning Team harvested and
documented five previous twinning examples
from the network, received 43 applications
from across the 5 regions of GEN and 25
countries, connected 13 partners/twins and
had 9 specific project proposals submitted.
The 9 projects happened on the ground
in the communities, with communications
and collaboration between the partners
happening virtually due to the COVID-19
travel restrictions. A challenge at first
that turned into excellent examples of
exchange through online methods, that were
sustainable, had low ecological footprints and
were geographically diverse.
FUNDED PROJECTS 2020
30. GEN Ambassadors help spread the hope,
inspiration and concrete solutions developed in
ecovillages around the world, and invite others to
become involved in the Global Ecovillage Network.
As Ambassadors communicate GEN’s work in local
languages and connect it with diverse cultural
contexts and grassroots movements, they are an
integral part of connecting GEN with the ecovillage
movement and network all over the world.
WHAT A GEN AMBASSADOR IS AND DOES
A GEN Ambassador is an individual who knows
the Global Ecovillage Network well and is able
to represent GEN on local, national and/or
international levels, regardless of whether or not
she or he lives in an ecovillage community. A GEN
Ambassador stays updated about GEN by reading
GEN Newsletters and websites and attending
GEN events. Learn more about the programme
and apply here: ecovillage.org/ambassadors
The focus for the Ambassadors programme this
year was to create closer connections and ways of
working together throughout the pandemic. GEN
held 2 global Ambassadors webinars. This was a
GEN AMBASSADORS
place for Ambassadors to meet their fellows
from around the world, to share about their
communities and ways of connecting, coming
together and supporting each other when
times are tough and we can’t meet in person.
GEN also worked with the Regional Liaisons in
also holding 5 regional Ambassador Meetings
(one for each region). This was to encourage
Ambassadors to create closer ties to their
regional ‘offices’, and fellow local Ambassadors
and to catalyze any support initiatives or
projects in their nations and regions. Each
regional will now hold their own, regular,
Ambassador meetings in the years to come.
Two other projects that were initiated this year,
is the new ambassador application process
which was given an IT re-haul and is due to
come online in the beginning of 2021. As well
as the new The Art of Speaking and Presenting
course aimed at Ambassadors, available on
the new learn.ecovillage platform, also coming
online the beginning of 2021. We are excited for
all the many future offerings for and from our
GEN Ambassadors!

In concert with the restructuring of the Network and GEN
International, the organisation underwent a reorientation of
vision and strategy. Its purpose was to explore ways that GEN
could build self-sustaining models. We expect this process to
streamline our financial reporting to clearly align with our targets.

The 2020 overall revenue stream declined in comparison
to 2019 and 2018 due to a drop in funded project revenue,
while the 2020 earned income recorded a slight increase as
compared to 2019. Our three pillars of funding remain:
1. Funded Projects
2. Social Entrepreneurship
Consultancy and Education
Online Summit
Merchandise
3. Donations and grants
Private Foundations
Friends of GEN
32. INCOME
Funded Projects
GEN has experienced a drop of income in funded projects
since 2019. More than ever we are grateful to our
donors’ support that allows us to amplify the impact of
our work to fulfill our targets. Further development of
strong relationships with partners encourages synergies
and alignments that add weight to our collective vision
of greater sustainability. We have had the privilege of
working with the Scottish Government, the German
Foreign Ministry, the British Council and the European
Commission, amongst others.
Funded Projects account for 38.4% of total revenue in
2020 in contrast to 22% in 2015.
Social Entrepreneurship
Results for second Online Summit again exceeded
expectations. The market for this still seems to be strong
and GEN will continue to host an Online Summit on an
annual basis.
The Education & Consultancy focus area faced a quick
and significant adaption from face-to-face learning tools
to online education. The launch of the Online Learning
Platform in early 2020 supported this shift. In 2020 there
was £52,713 earned in Education & Consultancy.
Our Online Market inventory consists of material that
GEN uses in our Education programmes. Its results
are therefore linked to the Education & Consultancy
revenue. 2020 shows the shift to online education has a
positive impact on this area.
In total, Earned Revenue has increased from 1.41%
of total revenue in 2015 to account for 12% of total
revenue in 2020.
33. EXPENDITURE
Donations
Friends of GEN, our monthly donors program,
started in 2017 and has grown 195% from 2017 to
2020. Friends of GEN energize us with enthusiasm
and support and show us how many small gifts can
make a huge difference. In 2020 we earned £8,053
thanks to the generous donations of our 81 Friends
of GEN. We are looking to expand this program in
2021 with a strong social media presence and donor
relations.
GEN continues to be enormously grateful for
the support of Gaia Trust in Denmark. While
the percentage of total funding from Gaia Trust
decreased from 48% in 2015 to 47% in 2020, they
remain a critical part of GEN’s income streams and
have allowed us to thrive in ways that we could not
have done otherwise. 30% of this funding passes
through GEN to support the work of GEN Regions
and NextGEN.-
GEN’s spending is aligned with our Targets, and it is
then allocated into working groups or Focus Areas.
Outreach and Networking
Spending in this area slightly decreased compared
with prior years and ensures strong regional
cooperation and synergies. In 2020, Advocacy and
Networking mainly contributed to these strategic
goals: (1) cultivate relationships of cooperation and
mutual support throughout GEN, (2) to showcase,
connect and unify ecovillage networks worldwide, (3)
nurture strategic partnerships & alliances to spread
ecovillage approaches & support implementation of
Climate Agreement & SDGs
34. EXPENDITURE
Focus Areas to ensure funded projects are well
aligned to our targets. In 2020, we increased our
fundraising efforts and carried out an assessment
of GEN’s Fundraising activities. All Focus Areas and
Fundraising contributed to achieve our strategic goal
for 2020 to increase the economic capacity of GEN
through individual donations and funded projects.

Funded Project spending
The significant increase compared to 2019 in 2020
spending was due to timing differences. Several
projects were only funded at the end of 2019 and GEN
delayed spending until 2020.
35. OUR CIRCLES
GEN’s General Assembly and Board of Trustees
are made up of representatives appointed
through each of the 5 GEN Regions. Together,
the GEN Board and GA oversee GEN’s strategic
direction and finances - and their conversations,
at the heart of the GEN network and
organisation, are characterised by their global
and intercultural nature.
GEN’s dedicated Staff team, under the
leadership of a Director’s Circle, works hand
in hand with regional staff to implement GEN’s
objectives and targets. The GEN Elders and GEN
Advisory Board share their wisdom and advice at
crucial points.

Hildur and Ross Jackson bought Fjordvang, the former
“World University”, a farm in Denmark, to establish an
“ecovillage.” As a first step, Gaia Trust commissioned
a survey to identify the best global examples of
ecovillages and convened twenty people from some
of the best communities and a few broad thinkers to
discuss how best to use the funds. The consensus was
to support the people who were actually living the new
paradigm— ecovillagers.
It’s important to note that many GEN members were
founded before the term “ecovillage” was established.
Solheimer (Iceland) has roots going back to 1930. In
the 1960s, Findhorn (Scotland), The Farm (Tennessee,
USA), Sarvodaya (Sri Lanka), the NAAM movement
(Burkino Faso), and Auroville (India) emerged.
1991 1993
1995
Gaia Trust brought together a number of
established and embryonic Danish ecovillages as
the Danish Ecovillage Network — the first national
network - and called the second global strategy
meeting.
A conference at Findhorn: “Ecovillages and
Sustainable Communities for the 21 Century”
was attended by over 400 people from forty
countries, with the proceedings published by the
Findhorn Press.

Trust, Denmark.
Gaia Trust committed to covering the expenses of the
network for 3-5 years to focus on forming networks
to link existing projects. A second longer-term goal
was set to create global services, like an education
network, that would cut across regions, as soon as
budgets and manpower permitted.
GEN participated in the United Nations Habitat
II conference in Istanbul. A straw bale wall was
installed to display photos from ecovillages
around the world. Hildur distributed 5000
copies of The Earth is Our Habitat and the team
hosted more than 40 workshops on all issues of
ecovillages and global politics.
A period of building networks under the leadership
of the three regional secretaries, namely Declan
Kennedy, Albert Bates, and Max Lindegger,
who constituted the initial GEN board, with
coordination by Hamish Stewart, the International
Secretary, based at Fjordvang.

based on the “Living and Learning” concept as a new
paradigm in education: you can live the new lifestyle,
while you are learning how to establish and design it.

GATHERINGS
Our projects team worked hard to secure new projects that help achieve
our mission, spread ecovillage learnings and support our members.
WESEEN will build capacity in national networks, while the Yes to
Sustainability Partnership will support the incorporation of young
people in ecovillage lifestyles. We were also successful in securing a joint
Horizon2020 project on community-led energy transition.
We also continue to welcome ESC volunteers to the office with Erasmus+
funding, providing much-needed office support as well as a chance for
young people to get involved in the ecovillage world.
Having been forced to cancel our in-person summer event, we celebrated
our first ever Online European Ecovillage Gathering: a resounding
success, with two days of quality panels and workshops under the
theme What If? Ecovillage Solutions for Extraordinary Times. Over 300
people registered, and thanks to a lively Discord server we were able to
stimulate real connection, exchange and debate throughout. While we
look forward to meeting again in person, we were thrilled to discover
and stretch the possibilities of online interactivity and its implications for
opening up the world of ecovillages to an even wider audience.
