10 Steps for Interviewing
1. Do your research: Review their website,LinkedIn companypage,Facebook & twitter sites and run a basic Google search
on the Firm and possiblythe person you will be interviewing with.If you have any questions aboutthe Firm,culture, benefits,
please make sure to ask the recruiter helping you firstas this may help you focus and ask better questions during the
interview
2. Look Sharp: Ask the recruiter what is required or preferred attire. Most firms no longer really expect a suiton an interview.
Make sure whatyou are wearing looks greatand that you’re comfortable during the interview so you can focus on your
responses and the person you’re interviewing
3. Be Prepared: Bring a folder with extra copies ofyour resume. Sometimes recruiters modifyresumes when presenting to
their Clients so make sure to ask for the revised version. Bring a notepad with your questions written down. You look better
when prepared.Plus you get to take notes for future reference.Keep in mind,nothing worse than leaving the interview and
being annoyed at forgetting to ask a question you really wanted an answer for.
4. Be on time: Show up to the office at least15 minutes early. Sit in the car, catch your breath,play a game on your phone,
call a friend for support…anything.There is enough tension & stress going on when interviewing so no need to add to it…
5. Show enthusiasm: Firm handshake with everyone you interview. Greet everyone by name.Smile…amazing how few
people are so stressed theydon’teven smile. Show these folks you really want to work there but don’tgo over the top…
6. Listen:Listen to what they’re saying and what they’re really saying… I learned in therapy that it isn’twhat you say but what
the other person hears which brings me to the next point…
7. Answer the question directly: Don’tdance, be direct, provide facts, don’tbitch aboutprevious job or other employees…
When asked a question,make sure you don’t ‘vomita great deal of information. When they’re asking a question,the person
is typically waiting to hear a certain word, thoughtprocess or how you resolve issues. Sometimes itis very easy to provide
a great deal of information withoutactuallyanswering the question or providing the answer the interviewer is looking for…
When asked a question,itis ok to ask a clarifying question. Gives you a chance to collectyour thoughts,pre pare your
answer and hopefullyprovide the exact info they’re trying to find out about you.
8. Give Specific examples: Talk about your accomplishments and notday to day tasks. Companies wantto know how you
deal with companyobjectives,results ofmanaging budgets,managing people,delivering on your key responsibilities. Let
them know about the times you were fully engaged & committed to your employer(s).
9. Ask questions: you broughtthe notepad with questions written on it…use the questions.Letthem know you’re curious about
the culture, whatkind of career progression has helped other employees,etc.
10. Follow up: get their card and contact info. Send them an email to thank them for their time and maybe 1 to 3 bulletitems
reminding them ofthings you’ve done or are capable ofdoing which would benefitthe company. Also, contact your recruiter
to let them know how the interview went.
