Mad Max fury road:
Looking at the visuals of fury road was mainly
based on set design and costumes they made. All
the costumes made in the film had this theme of
what they can salvage from scraps that seems to
be the theme of the whole film in its need for
supplies and resources. I’ll use this in my project
by using items that I can find that’s its original
purpose cannot be used for but can be used as
something else if needs be.
On the other side besides costume there is the
visuals that the film uses. With a mix in practical
and special effects most shots look just as good
without CGI this shows the amount of practice
that’s gone into these shots and the work they’ve
put into rehearsing and practicing.
And an aspect of rehearsing and practicing is what
I want for the sequences for the best result unlike
my other products where I had only script reads.
making the product poorly rehearsed.
Having this will mean I can focus on getting my
shots perfect to the sequence that is happening in
the film

Inglorious bastards:
How Quentin Taraniteno writes this film is very smart in the way that all of this film there's much more
depth in a conversation than just what they're talking about.
An example of this is inglorious bastards. Where the Americans are trying to infiltrate the theater
pretending to be Italians. In this scene it’s a very simple concept the Americans are doing a bad job of
hiding there identity's as spy's and the viewer would think there cover would have been blow due to
them talking to the main villain.
Although Taraniteno plays with us and writes it in such a way that it appears threating and somewhat
un-nerving.
With the main villain asking the name of each individual spy as their alibi (fake name), and
congratulating them getting it right.
This makes the stakes higher because our main villain knows these people are imposters but doesn't
straight away. This creates a manlipative and terrifying villain that we know are capable of doing things
but has so much power he doesn't need to use the easier option to complete the task.

Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows:
The scene where they are running though the woods while
taking heavy artillery and gun fire. This scene is made on a
rig and tracks our protagonists. But instead on the camera
zooming into key parts its zoomed by the editing software
from a snippet of a frame to the whole frame entirely
constantly switching zooming in and out. From the full
frame. This gives the scene some more intense moments
with the action being focused on in the scene. The steady
cam makes this more of a group action sequence then
anything else.
With the tree branches obscuring viewpoints this helps the
cuts for each zoom in the action sequence. What this does
is it gives us character perception of the fight without it
being in there point of view. This shows similarities to the
reverse POV shot that some people use to show distress in a
character although what happens here is that the shots are
used to show the intcence action and the drive for the
characters. Another key factor making this a good shot is
that all progress is going to the right of the screen. Meaning
the clips are moving forward.
This is something ill keep a key fact in my film. Making sure
that the contingence of the shots continue on as well as the
tracking of these shots too. This is something ill use a slider
from a far with the zooming in effect that this sequence
uses in post to show the chase. This effect was done in post
production so learning sequences like this for my film would
highly benefit me.

Far cry a new dawn:
What this game does is that it changes
the look and feel for the gameplay from
its predecessors. With taking things from
the old game and making suit the post
apocalyptic look of the new dawn game.
With guns and scopes being replaced with
pipes bolts and other household items to
change the way the item looks. How this
will link to my film however is the props in
the film.
What I'm going to take from this game is
the ideas and the versatility of each
object that is replaced or changed on the
item.
An example that ill use in my production
is using motorbike gear as a main bit of
body armor as well as making stocks out
of pipes and padded fabric.

The fallout 76 trailer really showed
off the vibe of what the game was
going to be like with friends showing
action with upbeat music and lots of
cuts what I want to do is get this
across as well giving the fun in the
apocyptic vibe to my film where
action and fun can be combied into
one. With this knowledge I will shape
the script round this concept.
The editing in this sequence is fast
pace and high adrenalin playback. So
with my editing for a trailer and
action ill do fast cuts like this good
music to go along. bethesda soft works . (2018). Fallout 76

John Wick is one of the films I wanted to base the
action off because of the choreographed hand to
hand combat sequences they have so much of
throughout the film. The benefit of using this film
to research is that having somewhat of
information to look at as well as how to make an
action sequence look realistic. With these things
in mind we can go over again and again to try get
something that looks good and the same style.
This also means we can focus on hand to hand
combat for the film focusing on trying to make
our film fighting like the fighting in john wick.
The way the camera shots are used is quite far of
from the fighting if a gun is used give a big set for
the viewer to look around while close up is more
just hand to hand combat.
The sound is linked perfectly to the action as well
as the music fits in so well to the film with it being
electronic action music.
Existing Products (summary)
What I'm going to take from this is all of what these designs
and scenes have done and try and implement that into my
film with finding the right equipment. To shoot in that style.
What I'm going to do looking at all of these films is try and
write my film professionally therefor the story isn't bland and
can process though a thought out bit of work. Having this
mind set should tick all the boxes that I talked about in the
other products I looked at.
As well as mixing all the themes I have explored such as the
costume and the editing style if I at least explore one of each
bit of research it would be considered a success. Being able to
show how my research has affected the making of my final
product will be a good contrast in the future.
Surveys
• 62% female
• 31% male
• 6% other
• Looking at these stats main I
know who will be being
involved with helping the
creation and watching the final
product. Therefor with these
responses can mean I know
what audience I want to aim
towards. Therefor taking their
advice and feedback the most.
What ill do is tailor to there
tastes in these themes that I'm
exploring.
Surveys
• 12 out of the 16 responses thought about zombies when asked the
question.
• What this shows is that the most popular idea for post apocalyptic
films are zombie themed. What this means is that my film will be
kept in the post apocalyptic world and try and suit these people.
Along side some of the action elements from the films they had
chosen. What I'm going to do is adapt the theme to suit these
zombie like people therefor may have feral people that could
resemble zombies. Therefor suiting this audience.
Surveys
• Most popular response being
6-10 minutes
• This is about the right time
for the film with the
minimum being 5 minutes of
film and the story having to
told in less than that is highly
unlikely. Therefor having this
new time frame will give me
freedom to show the story
more and explore elements
of the themes I want to show
more clearly.
Surveys
• 37.5% both went for the story and
type of apocalypse
• Therefor with this as a main
response I can write my story in
such a way that its heavily story
based and the themes are getting
across well. Other % want to know
the type of apocalypse therefor
having a part in the film (that isn't
exposition) that shows rather than
tells about the state in the world.
How ill do this is shooting early
hours in the morning meaning it’ll
look light enough although having
roads and areas empty to film.
Surveys
• Characters (8) and action (9)
• The 2 most popular responses
are action and characters.
Therefor these will be the main
focus of the film beside the
theme. What ill do is make sure
the action sequences are well
rehearsed. Therefor flow really
well in the production making
sure the action has drive and
reason behind it. Wile the
characters will be done via the
writing and the script work I do
to make them into something.
Another reason to show rather
than tell.
Surveys
• People wanted to see character in
the people I create and want to
have emotional attachment
• A lot of story based twist and
turns
• Another response mainly based
round the actors and story. This
means that ill have to write in
such away that these people feel
somewhat real to the viewers.
What I'm going to do is rather
show than tell. Due to my target
audience being a teenage to older
age range ill treat them like that
rather than having to tell them
everything in exposition.
Surveys (summary)
What I’ll take from this section is the feedback
from the people who took the survey. How ill
suit these audience members is taking what
they say and trying to implement it in the film.
While on the other hand trying to meet them in
the middle by making something new or
adapting something they know, in a way of if I
lay doesn't the rules of the story therefor I can
do what I want with the protagonists.
Production research
Tutorials:
What I've been looking into tutorial wise is a lot of “how
to make” costume designs. This was so I could have an
idea of what I wanted to make and what themes I want to
explore. This I've already put into affect by making
costumes already for the production of the film.
Other tutorials are looking at what people have already
made and different styles of work. Knowing what is a
good balance of shot types compared to the balance of
story and character development. Then looking at the
behind the scenes to see what these people did to make
the film and try and implement it into my work.
• Costume:
– Gas masks £15
– Coats £30 total
– Boots £10 each
– Kneepads £4 each
– Masks £5 - £10
– Props £50
– Spay paint £4 each
– Latex / fake blood

Camera and post:
What camera we’d be using is a canon camera
600/700D. This can shoot in a 1080p format that
will do just fine for my production.
I'm going to try and use color grading in post to
give my film a certain look as seen on films like
mad max due to the filter they use. Doing this
can set the scene of the whole film and give it a
distinct style.

Fmp reserach 2019

  • 1. FMP Research 2019 By Fraser Hardwick
  • 2. Existing products Mad Max fury road: Looking at the visuals of fury road was mainly based on set design and costumes they made. All the costumes made in the film had this theme of what they can salvage from scraps that seems to be the theme of the whole film in its need for supplies and resources. I’ll use this in my project by using items that I can find that’s its original purpose cannot be used for but can be used as something else if needs be. On the other side besides costume there is the visuals that the film uses. With a mix in practical and special effects most shots look just as good without CGI this shows the amount of practice that’s gone into these shots and the work they’ve put into rehearsing and practicing. And an aspect of rehearsing and practicing is what I want for the sequences for the best result unlike my other products where I had only script reads. making the product poorly rehearsed. Having this will mean I can focus on getting my shots perfect to the sequence that is happening in the film
  • 3. Existing products Inglorious bastards: How Quentin Taraniteno writes this film is very smart in the way that all of this film there's much more depth in a conversation than just what they're talking about. An example of this is inglorious bastards. Where the Americans are trying to infiltrate the theater pretending to be Italians. In this scene it’s a very simple concept the Americans are doing a bad job of hiding there identity's as spy's and the viewer would think there cover would have been blow due to them talking to the main villain. Although Taraniteno plays with us and writes it in such a way that it appears threating and somewhat un-nerving. With the main villain asking the name of each individual spy as their alibi (fake name), and congratulating them getting it right. This makes the stakes higher because our main villain knows these people are imposters but doesn't straight away. This creates a manlipative and terrifying villain that we know are capable of doing things but has so much power he doesn't need to use the easier option to complete the task.
  • 4. Existing products Sherlock Holmes a game of shadows: The scene where they are running though the woods while taking heavy artillery and gun fire. This scene is made on a rig and tracks our protagonists. But instead on the camera zooming into key parts its zoomed by the editing software from a snippet of a frame to the whole frame entirely constantly switching zooming in and out. From the full frame. This gives the scene some more intense moments with the action being focused on in the scene. The steady cam makes this more of a group action sequence then anything else. With the tree branches obscuring viewpoints this helps the cuts for each zoom in the action sequence. What this does is it gives us character perception of the fight without it being in there point of view. This shows similarities to the reverse POV shot that some people use to show distress in a character although what happens here is that the shots are used to show the intcence action and the drive for the characters. Another key factor making this a good shot is that all progress is going to the right of the screen. Meaning the clips are moving forward. This is something ill keep a key fact in my film. Making sure that the contingence of the shots continue on as well as the tracking of these shots too. This is something ill use a slider from a far with the zooming in effect that this sequence uses in post to show the chase. This effect was done in post production so learning sequences like this for my film would highly benefit me.
  • 5. Existing product Far cry a new dawn: What this game does is that it changes the look and feel for the gameplay from its predecessors. With taking things from the old game and making suit the post apocalyptic look of the new dawn game. With guns and scopes being replaced with pipes bolts and other household items to change the way the item looks. How this will link to my film however is the props in the film. What I'm going to take from this game is the ideas and the versatility of each object that is replaced or changed on the item. An example that ill use in my production is using motorbike gear as a main bit of body armor as well as making stocks out of pipes and padded fabric. Farcry new dawn 2019 Farcry 5 2018
  • 6. Existing product The fallout 76 trailer really showed off the vibe of what the game was going to be like with friends showing action with upbeat music and lots of cuts what I want to do is get this across as well giving the fun in the apocyptic vibe to my film where action and fun can be combied into one. With this knowledge I will shape the script round this concept. The editing in this sequence is fast pace and high adrenalin playback. So with my editing for a trailer and action ill do fast cuts like this good music to go along. bethesda soft works . (2018). Fallout 76 Gameplay Trailer "Let's Work With Others" E3 2018. • 7. Existing product John Wick is one of the films I wanted to base the action off because of the choreographed hand to hand combat sequences they have so much of throughout the film. The benefit of using this film to research is that having somewhat of information to look at as well as how to make an action sequence look realistic. With these things in mind we can go over again and again to try get something that looks good and the same style. This also means we can focus on hand to hand combat for the film focusing on trying to make our film fighting like the fighting in john wick. The way the camera shots are used is quite far of from the fighting if a gun is used give a big set for the viewer to look around while close up is more just hand to hand combat. The sound is linked perfectly to the action as well as the music fits in so well to the film with it being electronic action music.
  • 8. Existing Products (summary) What I'm going to take from this is all of what these designs and scenes have done and try and implement that into my film with finding the right equipment. To shoot in that style. What I'm going to do looking at all of these films is try and write my film professionally therefor the story isn't bland and can process though a thought out bit of work. Having this mind set should tick all the boxes that I talked about in the other products I looked at. As well as mixing all the themes I have explored such as the costume and the editing style if I at least explore one of each bit of research it would be considered a success. Being able to show how my research has affected the making of my final product will be a good contrast in the future.
  • 9. Surveys • 62% female • 31% male • 6% other • Looking at these stats main I know who will be being involved with helping the creation and watching the final product. Therefor with these responses can mean I know what audience I want to aim towards. Therefor taking their advice and feedback the most. What ill do is tailor to there tastes in these themes that I'm exploring.
  • 10. Surveys • 12 out of the 16 responses thought about zombies when asked the question. • What this shows is that the most popular idea for post apocalyptic films are zombie themed. What this means is that my film will be kept in the post apocalyptic world and try and suit these people. Along side some of the action elements from the films they had chosen. What I'm going to do is adapt the theme to suit these zombie like people therefor may have feral people that could resemble zombies. Therefor suiting this audience.
  • 11. Surveys • Most popular response being 6-10 minutes • This is about the right time for the film with the minimum being 5 minutes of film and the story having to told in less than that is highly unlikely. Therefor having this new time frame will give me freedom to show the story more and explore elements of the themes I want to show more clearly.
  • 12. Surveys • 37.5% both went for the story and type of apocalypse • Therefor with this as a main response I can write my story in such a way that its heavily story based and the themes are getting across well. Other % want to know the type of apocalypse therefor having a part in the film (that isn't exposition) that shows rather than tells about the state in the world. How ill do this is shooting early hours in the morning meaning it’ll look light enough although having roads and areas empty to film.
  • 13. Surveys • Characters (8) and action (9) • The 2 most popular responses are action and characters. Therefor these will be the main focus of the film beside the theme. What ill do is make sure the action sequences are well rehearsed. Therefor flow really well in the production making sure the action has drive and reason behind it. Wile the characters will be done via the writing and the script work I do to make them into something. Another reason to show rather than tell.
  • 14. Surveys • People wanted to see character in the people I create and want to have emotional attachment • A lot of story based twist and turns • Another response mainly based round the actors and story. This means that ill have to write in such away that these people feel somewhat real to the viewers. What I'm going to do is rather show than tell. Due to my target audience being a teenage to older age range ill treat them like that rather than having to tell them everything in exposition.
  • 15. Surveys (summary) What I’ll take from this section is the feedback from the people who took the survey. How ill suit these audience members is taking what they say and trying to implement it in the film. While on the other hand trying to meet them in the middle by making something new or adapting something they know, in a way of if I lay doesn't the rules of the story therefor I can do what I want with the protagonists.
  • 16. Production research Tutorials: What I've been looking into tutorial wise is a lot of “how to make” costume designs. This was so I could have an idea of what I wanted to make and what themes I want to explore. This I've already put into affect by making costumes already for the production of the film. Other tutorials are looking at what people have already made and different styles of work. Knowing what is a good balance of shot types compared to the balance of story and character development. Then looking at the behind the scenes to see what these people did to make the film and try and implement it into my work.

  • 18. Production research Camera and post: What camera we’d be using is a canon camera 600/700D. This can shoot in a 1080p format that will do just fine for my production. I'm going to try and use color grading in post to give my film a certain look as seen on films like mad max due to the filter they use. Doing this can set the scene of the whole film and give it a distinct style.
