80 percent of obese adults have at least one other weight-related disease such as but not limited to; type II diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, high cholesterol, gallbladder disease, or osteoarthritis (Hojjat, 2013). With 87 percent of the United States population having Internet access (Pew Research, 2014a), 90 percent of United States adults owning a cell phone and 65 percent of Americans owning a smartphone (Pew Research, 2014b) a unique digital opportunity for self-monitoring a healthier lifestyle presents itself. “We have the technology to improve the overall fitness and health of the nation,” says Paul Williams, a lead scientist at the U.S. Government National Berkeley Life Sciences Lab (Williams, 2006, para. 6).
