Battle Royale for sixth Maha Rajya Sabha Seat

Mumbai: The battle for
the sixth Rajya Sabha
seat from Maharashtra,
the nominations for
which will be filed May
26-31, is hotting up, with
parties keeping their
cards close to their chest
so as to deny their politi-
cal opponents the slight-
est edge to run away with
the prize.
While the BJP is as-
suredof sendingtwoMPs
to the Rajya Sabha, it is
toying with the idea of
breaking opposition par-
ty votes to favour a third
candidate it may decide
to back. As reported by
First India, the BJP has
unconditionally prom-
ised its 22 extra votes to
Chhatrapati Sambhaji
Raje,whomithadaccom-
modated in the Rajya
Sabha through a presi-
dential nomination for
the last six years, if he
contests as an independ-
ent. While the party had
earlier planned to send
Union Minister for Com-
mercePiyushGoyalfrom
Maharashtraitisactively
considering sending him
to the Rajya Sabha from
MadhyaPradeshinstead,
it is reliably learnt.
Meanwhile, the Shiv
Sena had offered its addi-
tional 13 votes to the de-
scendent of Chhatrapati
Shivaji Maharaj on the
condition that he joined
the party and contested
as a Sena candidate. He is
still to respond to the of-
fer.
There is also intense
speculation on the role
NCP (Nationalist Con-
gressParty)chief Sharad
Pawar will play in the
coming days, until the
polls on June 10. The par-
ty has also been mulling
over the candidature of
actor Urmila Matondkar
and party stalwart Chan-
drakant Khaire for the
sixth seat but is yet to
make up its mind.
While Pawar has an-
nounced the backing of
his party’s 11 additional
votes, he also commands
the support of other po-
liticalformationslikethe
Samajwadi Party and
eventheAIMIMthatmay
vote en-block.
Since neither the BJP
nor the MVA alliance has
the requisite number of
votes to elect the sixth RS
candidate, a new permu-
tation may be worked out
by Pawar--who is known
for his ability to forge un-
likely alliances--with po-
litical strings attached,
according to political ob-
servers.

Talking to reporters
here over the issue,
Danve said, “Had the
Shiv Sena given its first
seat, which it is sure to
win, to Sambhajiraje, it
would have reflected the
party’s respect for him.
The sixth seat (for
which a contest is like-
ly) should have been
given to Sanjay Raut.”
The polls are sched-
uled for June 10.
Sambhajiraje, a
member of the Kol-
hapur royal family and
descendant of Chhatra-
pati Shivaji Maharaj,
was earlier a President-
nominated member of
the Upper House of Par-
liament.
He recently an-
nounced that he would
contest the next elec-
tion to the RS as an in-
dependent candidate,
and appealed to all par-
ties to back him.
The BJP can win two
RS seats with the num-
ber of MLAs it has,
while the ruling allies
Shiv Sena, Congress
and NCP in Maharash-
tra can win a seat
each. The contest will,
therefore, be for the
sixth seat.
Some senior Shiv

said the party will field
a second candidate in

Union Government
has reduced taxes on
fuel twice, and the
Maharashtra Gov-
ernment should also
now cut fuel tax to
provide relief to the
general public, Un-
ion minister Raosa-
heb Danve said on
Monday.
Notably, Maharash-
tra, Rajasthan and
Kerala decreased
VAT on petrol and
diesel following Union
Finance Minister
Nirmala Sitharaman’s
call to provide further
relief to consumers
following a cut in
excise duty by the
Centre.
Danve said, “No
state government has
the right to decide fuel
and natural gas prices
as they are linked to
international markets.
There is also an im-
pact of the Russia-
Ukraine war. Still, the
Central Government
reduced fuel prices
twice.”
Prime Minister
Narendra Modi also
appealed to states
to cut taxes on fuel.
“But, the Maharashtra
government did not
do so,” the BJP
leader said.
“Instead of reduc-
ing taxes, the state gov-
ernment pointed a fin-
ger at us. Now, they are
demanding a reduc-
tion in gas prices. The
state government
should bring down its
taxes and give relief to
the common man. We
can see the fuel prices
are less in neighbour-
ing Karnataka, Goa
and Gujarat than in
Maharashtra,” Danve
said.

Mumbai: A day after
the Maharashtra
Government an-
nounced a reduction
in VAT on petrol and
diesel, BJP leader
Devendra Fadnavis
on Monday termed it
as “absolute cheat-
ing” and said the rul-
ing dispensation in
the state should im-
mediately slash the
fuel prices without
“fooling the people”
anymore.
The reduction in
price as claimed by the
state government is a
natural result of the
Centre’s decision to
cut down excise duty
on fuel, Fadnavis
said in a series of
tweets.
The Centre on
Saturday reduced
the excise duty on
petrol and diesel.
On Sunday
, the Shiv
Sena-led state
g o v e r n -
m e n t
r e -
duced the per-litre Val-
ue Added Tax (VAT) on
petrol by `2.08 and die-
sel by `1.44 and said the
state exchequer will
have to bear an annual
loss of `2,500 crore as a
result of this decision.
Reacting to the
move, Fadnavis tweet-
ed: “What is done by
MVA is just an April
Fool’s act in the month
of May!!! We once
again demand that
MVA should immedi-
ately take a decision
on reducing fuel pric-
es give relief to citi-
zens, without fooling
the people any more.”
The BJP leader fur-
ther said the `2.08 and
`1.44 reduction in the
perlitrepricesof petrol
anddiesel,respectively
,
in Maharashtra is the
outcome of the Centre
reducing road and in-
frastructure cess.

This is not any kind of
relief by MVA Govt as
announced from the
official Twitter handle

The state recovers
taxes on basic fuel
price, commission giv-
en to dealers, road and
infrastructure and ag-
riculture and infra-
structure develop-
ment. So if the Centre
cuts down tax on any
of these, the state’s tax
reduces automatically,
said Fadnavis, who is
leader of opposition in
state Assembly

birthplace of Sant Tu-
karam, to throw open
the historic Shila
Mandir, the temple
dedicated to Maha-
rashtra’s 17th-century
saint, on June 14, he
will be the first Indian
PM to visit the shrine.
“We had met the
Prime Minister on
March 29 and invited
him to dedicate the new-
ly renovated temple to
the people. The Prime
Minister’s Office has
confirmed that he has
accepted the invitation
and will visit Dehu on

sidelines of World Eco-
nomic Forum in Davos.
The Memorandum of
Understanding were
signed with 23 compa-
nies from different
countries and these
will generate direct or
indirect employment
for 66,000 people, said
Industries Minister
Subhash Desai in a
statement.
Of these, over 55%
investments are For-
eign Direct Investments
from countries such as
Singapore, Indonesia,
the USA, and Japan.
These include invest-
ment in diverse sectors
including Pharmaceu-
ticals and Medical de-
vices, Data Centers,
Textiles, Food Process-
ing, and Steel.
The MoUs were
signed in the presence
of ministers Subhash
Desai, Nitin Raut and

The Magnetic Maha-
rashtra programme for
attracting investments
in the state is currently
into its 10th edition,
and has so far signed
121 MoUs which led to
investment worth `2.15

major Microsoft’s plan
to set up a data centre
in Pune with an invest-
ment of `3300 crore.

Nashik: A 42-year-old man was arrested for
allegedly killing his mother-in-law in Jharwad
village in Nashik district during a domestic
quarrel, a police official said on Monday. Kisan
Pardhi’s wife had left home due to his alcohol
addiction and he had gone to her maternal
house to get her back, official said. “Paridhi
attacked and killed his mother-in-law when she
tried to intervene between a quarrel with his
wife,” said Ghoti police station official.
Thane: Two persons were arrested for alleg-
edly cheating a man from Kharigaon-Kalwa
in Thane district of Rs10 lakh after promising
him a lucrative money exchange scheme, a
Sahapur Police Station official said on Monday.
The duo, identified as Nitesh and Chandu from
Khopoli, told victim Mahesh Patil that they
could give him currency in Rs100, 200 and 500
denominations in place of Rs2,000 notes, the
official said.
Mumbai: The Maharashtra Congress will hold a
conclave in Shirdi next month on lines of party’s
‘Chintan Shivir’ held in Udaipur in Rajasthan ear-
lier this month.The conclave, scheduled on June

Aurangabad: Farmers from Puntamba village
in Ahmedanagar district have threatened to go on
strike from June 1 if 16 of their demands are not
met. Villagers met during the day to finalize the
demands, including aid of Rs2lakh per hectare in
case sugarcane is not taken for crushing. “The
state government must give Rs1,000 per tonne of
sugarcane. Onion produce has reduced, farmers
should be given relief of Rs500 per quintal,” Kisan
Kranti Morcha member Dhananjay Dhanwate said.

majwadi Party (SP)
leader Abu Azmi has
claimed that MNS
Chief Raj Thackeray
deferred his Ayodhya
visit as he got scared
and that the latter
would not go to the Ut-
tar Pradesh city as he
“does not have guts”.
Speaking to the me-
dia in Pune on Sunday,
Azmi, who is also the
Maharashtra SP Chief,
said, Thackeray’s com-
ment about his surgery
scheduled soon was
only an excuse to defer
the Ayodhya visit.
He further added,
Thackeray’s party had
in the past allegedly
staged violent protests
against north Indians
in Maharashtra and the
“hatred sown by him
was being answered
with hatred”.
Notably, BJP MP
Brij Bhushan Sharan
Singh had opposed
Thackeray’s Ayodhya
visit, earlier scheduled
on June 5.

Mumbai: With most
routine transfers
having been put on
hold for the past
three years due to the
pandemic, Maha-
rashtra’s 1,87,729 po-
licemen find them-
selves in a rut.
Normally witnessed
annually in May, these
50-60,000 general trans-
fers, which cut across
the ranks from police
constables to senior po-
lice inspectors have
been stalled for the last
three years. This year,
despite May having en-
tered its last week, the
transfers are yet to be
affected, leaving listless
policemen pining for a
change in their place of
daily duties.
Due to the pandemic,
general transfers for
the fiscal years, 2020-
2021 and 2021-2022 were
deferred in the police
department, which also
curbed 25% of transfers
that were in fact or-
dered to remain on pa-
per only
.
With the state having
lifted all pandemic-re-
lated restrictions--in-
cluding mandatory
mask-wearing--in April
in keeping with the ebb
in COVID-19 cases, ex-
pectations of transfers
were keenly anticipat-
ed, even as Maharash-
tra’s workforce re-
turned to offices.
The Police Commis-
sioner, in urban areas
and, District Superin-
tendents of Police in
rural areas were expect-
ed to carry out the
transfers from among
police sepoys (1,00,858
total staff strength), po-
lice constables (51,220
force), assistant sub-in-
spectors of police
(17,071), police sub-in-
spectors (12,280) and
police inspectors and
senior police inspectors
(6,300).
Attempts to reach Di-
rector General of Police
Rajnish Seth did not
elicit a response.

Tight race for championship glory
as IPL 2022 heads to grand finale
he stage is set, 4 teams are
ready and now it’s a dash to
the finish in IPL 2022. After
two months of high voltage
action, thrilling finishes and
superlative individual perfor-
mances,IPLheadsforagrand
finale in the playoffs. Though
the last league game was in-
consequential, the Final Four
for the knockouts were de-
cided only in the penultimate
game – a reflection of the
close race in the league stage.
Three of the Top Four
were always a notch ahead in
the league. Table toppers Gu-
jarat Titans (GT), Lucknow
Super Giants (LSG) and Ra-
jasthan Royals (RR) were eas-
ily the sides that performed
creditably all through; and
the fact that despite Virat
Kohli’s horror season, RCB
finally squeezed through is a
testimony to the depth and
skill in their side.
GUJARAT TITANS
Amid the topsy-turvy results
at the league stage, the one
constant was Gujarat Titans
at the top of the points table.
This was a huge surprise be-
cause after the mega auction,
most experts believed that
they were one of the weakest
sides and had little chance of
making it to the playoffs. But
in Hardik Pandya, the team
discovered an inspirational
skipper who has displayed
fine leadership abilities, read
match situations deftly and
taken bold decisions that
have brought out the best
from his team-mates.
The resurgence of David
Miller, the class of Shubman
Gill at the top and Rahul Te-
watia’s daring exploits in the
late middle order have helped
the Titans to pull off victo-
ries in close clashes. But
what has enabled GT to
emerge as a formidable force
is the penetration of its bowl-
ing unit. While Shami has
regularly given break-
throughs in the initial overs,
Lockie Ferguson has bowled
with sharp pace to unsettle
the best of batters. Overall,
with an amazing mix of
youth and experience, the Ti-
tans could well reach the pin-
nacle of IPL glory in their
debut season.
LUCKNOW
SUPER GIANTS
The other debutants, Luc-
know Super Giants (LSG)
have been equally impressive
in the league. Under K L Ra-
hul’s able leadership and
Gautam Gambhir’s astute
mentorship, LSG have been
in fine form and were dis-
tinctly unlucky in not finish-
ing among the Top Two. Ra-
hul and Quinton de Kock
have been the finest opening
pair of IPL 2022 and their
bowling unit has given addi-
tional teeth to LSG’s soaring
hopes. With a quality mix of
skill and efficacy in both pace
and spin, LSG bowlers have
posed tough challenges for
most opponents. Their young
quickies, Avesh Khan and
Mohsin Khan have rarely
failed to jolt their opponents.
However, in their last few
games LSG looked rather vul-
nerable and lost two of their
final three matches. These
hiccups makes one wonder
whether LSG have enough
fuel power left in them to
clinch the championship.
ROYAL CHALLENGERS
BANGALORE
The third side that has never
won the IPL is RCB which
has had a roller-coaster ride
right through the league. On
paper, RCB are one of the
strongest squads but all
through this season they
have been terribly inconsist-
ent. Going from sublime in
one game to ridiculous in the
next, RCB were distinctly
lucky in grabbing a spot in
the playoffs.
Though Virat Kohli has
had his worst IPL season,
captain Faf du Plessis, Glen
Maxwell and most of all
Dinesh Karthik’s brilliance
as a finisher has enabled RCB
to stay alive. The gritty
Karthik displayed rare bat-
ting courage and flamboy-
ance that bailed the team out
of critical situations on nu-
merous occasions. However,
in the last match against the
Titans, Virat Kohli finally re-
gained his touch with a mas-
terly 73 which enabled RCB
to win and keep their hopes
alive. If Virat hits peak form
now, RCB could still grab the
IPL crown that’s eluded the
side till today
.
RAJASTHAN ROYALS
The only team in the fray who
have previously been IPL
champions - Rajasthan Roy-
als - have displayed a pluck
andpanachethatmakesthem
a force to reckon with. Much
of their early success was due
to Jos Buttler’s sublime, re-
cord-breaking form. The
guile and efficacy of their
bowling attack is what makes
Rajasthan a potentially
championship-winning side.
In the pace of Trent Boult
and Prasidh Krishna and the
wily spin of Yuzvendra Cha-
hal and Ravichandran Ash-
win, RR has a fine blend that
rarely permits other teams to
post imposing totals.

Patna: There is going
to be a big political
game in Bihar on the
pretext of caste based
census. Nitish will re-
main the Chief Minis-
ter but the political
equation will change. In
the midst of fierce op-
position from the
Bharatiya Janata Party,
the government in Bi-
har is going to conduct
a caste-based census
and soon the counting
of castes will start.
Chief Minister Nit-
ish Kumar has assured
the Leader of the Oppo-
sition Tejashwi Yadav,
who was about to start
a protest and march on
the issue of caste cen-
sus. Before that, he had
gone to meet the Chief
Minister for the last
time to know his opin-
ion on this issue. In this
meeting, the Chief Min-
ister told him that very
soon he would convene
a meeting of all parties
on this issue and start
the caste-based census.
Keep in mind that Nit-
ish has already an-
nounced that the Bihar
government will get the
caste count done in the
state at its own expense.
The caste-based cen-
sus can become the ba-
sis for the polarization
of backward castes in
Bihar and the coming
together of JDU-RJD.
The issue is already
shared between the two
parties and the Chief
Minister had gone to
meet the Prime Minis-
ter with the demand of
caste census, along with
Leader of Opposition
Tejashwi Yadav. BJP
leaders were also in-
cluded in this all-party
delegation but this was
not their agenda. Since
the coming together of
Nitish and Tejashwi in
the name of counting of
castes, both the parties
grew closer and in the
same proportion the
distance between JDU
and BJP has started in-
creasing. Despite the
complete surrender of
BJP, the matter seems
to have worsened.
Nitish and Tejashwi
have met publicly at
least thrice in the last
one month. Nitish first
attended the iftar given
by RJD at Rabri Devi’s
residence. After that
Tejashwi attended the
Iftar party given by Nit-
ish’s party and then
Tejashwi went to meet
the Chief Minister re-
garding the caste cen-
sus. Now Lalu Prasad is
waiting to reach Bihar.
He has been released
after getting bail in the
last fodder scam case
and is at his daughter
Misa Bharti’s house in
Delhi.
Lalu Prasad will go to
Patna at the end of this
month or in the first
week of next month and
this time, his 74th birth-
day
, falling on June 11, is
to be celebrated with
great pomp. Before that
he will reach Patna. It is
being told that Nitish
Kumar is to meet him
on that occasion or even
before that. Informed
sources say that this
wasdiscussedinTejash-
wi’s meeting with Nit-

particular date”, Nitish
Kumar told reporters.
The JD(U) leader, whose
ally BJP has of late
grown ambivalent over
the issue, expressed
confidence that all par-
ties in the state will
back the proposed move
before clearance is giv-
en by the cabinet.
The BJP’s recent in-
difference has followed
the Narendra Modi gov-
ernment’s refusal to
conduct a caste census
nationally. This has
evoked allegations from
oppositions like the
RJD that the BJP
, which
derives its support base
from, primarily, among
the upper castes, did n’t
care much for OBCs for
whom gains are expect-
ed from a headcount of
all castes.

FROM PASSENGER AT KOLKATA AIRPORT
New Delhi: Foreign currencies, including US dollars and
Euros, worth Rs 1.53 crore has been seized from a pas-
senger at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International
Airport in Kolkata, , the Enforcement Directorate said on
Monday. The seizure includes USD 1,65,000 and Euro
30,460, the federal agency said in a statement.The total
value of the foreign currencies is equivalent to about Rs
1.53 crore. It was informed by Customs officials.

EXPECTATION OF RATE HIKE IN
NEXT POLICY ‘A NO-BRAINER’
New Delhi (PTI): RBI
Governor Shaktikanta
Das on Monday hinted
at another interest rate
hike in early June to
bring down stubbornly
high inflation rate
which has remained
above the tolerance
level for the past four
months.
“Expectation of rate
hike, it’s a no-brainer.
There will be some
hike but how much I
will not be able to tell
now... To say that 5.15
(per cent) may not be
very accurate,” Das
said in an interview
with CNBC-TV18.
The next meeting of
the Monetary Policy
Committee (MPC) is
scheduled for June 6-8.
RBI, in its first rate
move in two years and
its first hike in nearly
four years, raised the
repo rate by 40 basis
points to 4.40% follow-
ing an off-cycle meet-
ing earlier this month.
In April RBI raised
its inflation forecast for
the current fiscal year
to 5.7% from earlier es-
timate of 4.5% and low-
ered its GDP estimate
to 7.2% from 7.8% for
2022-23, citing the im-
pact of escalating geo-
political tensions trig-
gered by the Russia-
Ukraine war.
Das further said the
RBI and government
has entered into anoth-
er phase of coordinat-
ed action to cool down
inflation.
RBI has taken a num-
ber of steps to moder-
ate inflation in the last
2-3 months, he said,
adding that the govern-
ment on other hand has
taken measures, in-
cluding wheat export
ban and cut in excise
duty on petrol and die-
sel.
All these put togeth-
er will have sobering
impact on price rise, he
added.
Retail inflation has
been above RBI’s upper
tolerance level for the
past four months.
The government has
mandated MPC headed
by the RBI Governor to
keep the retail inflation
between 2 to 6%.
As per the latest
print, the Consumer
Price Index (CPI) infla-
tion increased to 7.79%
against 6.95% in the
previous month and
4.21% in April 2021.
“Interest rates in al-
most every country to-
day are negative, ex-
cept Russia and Brazil.
The target for inflation
for advanced econo-
mies is about 2%. Ex-
cept for Japan and one
more country, all ad-
vanced economies have
inflation of over 7%,”
he said.
“We will move to-
wards positive real
rates, but it is impossi-
ble to forecast how
soon because of the
evolving situation,”
said the governor.

surge in their fortunes.
The pandemic and now

Meanwhile, decades of

rel could pose bigger threats
than inflation to the global
economy. “If oil prices remain
at $110 (per barrel) you are
not just talking about infla-
tion, then you’re talking about bigger threats.
You know, that’s where the R (recession)
word comes in,” Puri told a TV channel in an
interview at Davos.

Markets pare gains to end flat in volatile trade
Mumbai (PTI): In a
highly choppy session,
equity benchmarks
pared early gains to set-
tle on a flat note on
Monday, with the
Sensex falling 38 points
amid a heavy sell-off in
metal stocks.
The 30-share BSE
benchmark Sensex en-
countered volatility
during the day and set-
tled 37.78 points or
0.07% lower at 54,288.61.
During the day, it hit a
high of 54,931.30 and a
low of 54,191.55.
The broader NSE Nif-
ty declined 51.45 points
or 0.32% to end at
16,214.70.
From the Sensex
firms, Tata Steel tum-
bled the most by 12.53%,
followed by UltraTech
Cement, ITC, Power
Grid, HDFC, HDFC
Bank, HCL Technolo-
gies and Reliance In-
dustries.
In contrast, MM,
Maruti, Hindustan Uni-
lever, Larsen Toubro,
Asian Paints and Kotak
Mahindra Bank were
among the gainers.
` RECOVERS FROM RECORD LOWS TO END 15
PAISE HIGHER AT 77.55/$
Mumbai (PTI): Rupee recovered from record lows and
settled 15 paise higher at 77.55 (provisional) against the
US dollar on Monday, supported by a weak greenback
overseas. At the interbank forex market, the domestic unit
opened at 77.69 against the US dollar. It moved in a range
of 77.51 to 77.69 during the session. The rupee finally
snapped its three-session losing streak and closed at
77.55, registering a rise of 15 paise over its previous close.

longed high tempera-
tures are credit nega-
tive for India, as that
could exacerbate infla-
tion and hurt growth,
Moody’s Investors Ser-
vice said on Monday
.
Over the longer term,
India’s highly negative
credit exposure to phys-
icalclimaterisksmeans
its economic growth
will likely become more
volatile as it faces in-
creasing, and more ex-
treme incidences of
climate-related shocks,
it noted. The agency
said although heat
waves are fairly com-
mon in India, they usu-
ally occur in May and
June. However, this
year New Delhi wit-
nessed the fifth heat-
wave in May with the
maximum temperature
touching 490
celsius.
“The prolonged high
temperatures, which
are affecting much of
the northwest of the
country
, will curb wheat
production and could
lead to extended power
outages, exacerbating
already high inflation
and hurting growth, a
credit negative.”
The Indian govt has
revised down its esti-
mates for wheat produc-
tion by 5.4% to 105 mil-
lion tonnes for the crop
year ending June 2022,
given lower yields amid
higher temperatures.
Steel prices likely to
fall up to 15%: EEPC
Kolkata (PTI): In the
wake of rising input
costs, especially prima-
ry steel, the govern-
ment’s decision to re-
move import duty on
raw materials for the
metal production would
lower costs for domestic
steelmakers and reduce
prices by around 10%,
an Engineering Export
Promotion Council of-
ficial said on Monday
.
The move would help
engineering goods man-
ufacturers and export-
ers become more com-
petitive in the global
markets, EEPC India
chairman Mahesh De-
sai said.
He also said, “imposi-
tion of export duty on
iron ores and a host of
steel intermediaries
would increase the do-
mestic availability of
the key industry in-
puts”.
Unsustainable to
sell fuel in India,
say Pvt retailers
New Delhi (PTI):
RBML — the joint ven-
ture of RIL and super-
major BP — has told the
government that fuel
retailing for the private
sector in India has be-
come unsustainable af-
ter market-controlling
public sector firms fre-
quently froze petrol and
diesel prices at rates
way below the cost,
sources said.
Despite a surge in oil
prices, state-owned
IOC, HPCL and BPCL
first froze petrol and
diesel rates for a record
137 days beginning ear-
ly Nov 2021 when five
states including UP
went to the polls, and
last month again went
into a hiatus that is now
47 days old.
“They (RML) has
written to the petrole-
um ministry over the
fuel pricing issue,” a
source said.
While RBML is scal-
ing down its retail op-
erations to cut some of
the `700 crore loss it is
incurring every month,
Russia’s Rosneft-backed
Nayara Energy has
raised prices of petrol
and diesel by up to `3 a
litre over and above the
PSU rates, to cover for
some losses.
Two sources aware of
the matter said RBML
contends that PSU oil
marketing companies
control over 90% of the
market and are the
price-setters, leaving no
room for private fuel re-
tailers in fixation of the
retail selling price of
petrol and diesel.

called him up asking if
Mrs Gandhi was angry
or miffed with them, so
he would be the point
person giving assuranc-
es that all was well. He
was a master combina-
tionof handlingpolitical
affairs and alliance poli-
tics. There is no alterna-
tive to late Ahmed Patel
and it would be wrong to
equate KC with Ahmed
Bhai. KC is also a good
party leader but some-
one in Delhi told me that
off late he has started
keeping his main door
shut and those who have

ful of people, get to do so
through back door entry
to his house. The basic
issue is that these lead-
ers perhaps do not want
to face the crowd. The

I am sorry to say

not a success in Kerala,

Ahmed Bhai.

lenges before Rahul
Gandhi in current
situation?
The biggest challenge
before Rahul is consist-
ency
. He should sit in the
office and the office
should function as a
properoffice.If someone
sends him a letter they
should get its reply with-
in a week. Thirdly his
speeches need to be pre-
pared.HeisnoNarendra
Modi in that aspect but
one can prepare well
still. Sometimes he gives
a fiery and sensible
speech that one wants to
reward him, but gener-
ally
, he moves away from
the path. The problem is
that the issue that he
picks he is unable to
bring a connect between
thatissueandthepeople.
The on and off issue is a
reality with Rahul. He
goesonforeignvisitsand
it is alright to do so but
there should not be any
secrecy around it.

z Will Congress’s
Bharat Jodo Yatra be
a success?
It will be a success since
the idea is good. I will
have to compliment him
on one point that he
knows that Congress
will not come to power
for5-7years.Hesaidthat
we will have to sweat
hardwhilestressingthat
wehavebeendisconnect-
ed from the public. He
stressed that shortcuts
won’t work. Now the is-
sue is that the Yatra will
be taken out and natu-
rally there will be much
enthusiasminCongress-
ruled states. So, I believe
that in totality
, the Yatra
will be reasonably good
and successful since the
idea is good. This is why
he said that he wants to
come out of the room
and reach the masses.
This is a good point but
the real issue is that as
long as he is confined to
the room, there should
be accessibility too.

z During her speech
in CWC, Sonia Gan-
dhi asked the leaders
to give their due to
the party. Who do
you think she was
referring to?
See this was an emotion-
al speech and basically
the driving force behind
it was the pressure cre-
ated by the G—23 forces.

not think so since both
CMs are loyal and one

old belief that as long as
Congress stays in power

on Rahul Gandhi’s
suggestion of
reserving 50 percent
seats for the youth?
It is a good slogan he has
given that fifty percent
tickets should be given
to those under 45 years
of age which is a wel-
come decision, But
when this policy will be
implemented and its
pros and cons come to
light, the entire gamut
of the policy will be
known then. It is a good
slogan and a good effort
which should be carried
out. So on papers, it is
goodbutwhentheygoto
implement it, all the
policies and decisions
are of no use then when
other factors come into
play and then you work
under compulsions. So
let’s see how they are ex-
ecuted and implement-
ed in the coming days.

z Is the one family
one ticket rule adopt-
ed by Congress prac-
tical? Is it an attempt
of the Congress to
make itself free of dy-
nasty politics or per-
haps come out of the
shadow of dynasty
politics allegations
levelled against it?

concerns the
education I
have received.
Each tryst with the
many institutions that
I have been blessed to
study at, has present-
ed a unique, insight-
ful, experience. Be it
the boarding school in
the hills of Dehra
Dun, college in the
heart of Delhi Univer-
sity or post-gradua-
tion in the bustle of
cosmopolitan Mum-
bai; all the places, fac-
es, and experiences
have contributed infi-
nitely, to the person I
am today. There is
however one study-
stint that perhaps tops
the list, not necessari-
ly because it was bet-
ter than the rest, pure-
ly because it taught
me personally, the
most. And that would
have to be film school.
The year and a half I
spent at the New York
Film Academy’s Los
Angeles (Universal
Studios) branch was
life-altering. And that
is what I’d like to share
with you today
.
CONFIDENCE BOOSTER
First and foremost, it
was the first time I
was abroad, for the
long-term, living
alone. Nothing quite
prepared me for what
was to come. Having
lived by myself
through college in In-
dia, I was still very
protected. It was al-
ways in familiar sur-
roundings, among
people and places I
knew.
Now, in LA, I was
back in the United
States only for the
second time since hol-
idaying there with my
parents as a young
kid. This time, I had
to fend for myself.
Find an apartment,
enter into a lease,
open a bank account,
shop for and set up a
home, all on my own.
There were days when
it seemed like an in-
surmountable, daunt-
ing task. But it all got
done rather quickly,
and in the process,
taught me so much
about being in a for-
eign country and
managing on my own.
From the littlest
chore such as clean-
ing one’s bathroom
to, shopping and
cooking a meal; living
abroad alone is one of
life’s greatest teach-
ers, and it helps one
develop several life-
long skill sets.
PERSPECTIVE
WORLD VIEW
I also had the chance,
for the first time, to
have such an extend-
ed interaction with
people/students from
all over the world.
Again, like living in
one’s own country
breeds familiarity,
hanging out with
one’s friends and fam-
ily back home does
the same. Even if we
meet new people in
our own country and
hometown, there is a
shared commonality
that makes us all,
similar. Living, stud-
ying and working
with multiple nation-
alities bring about
altogether different
exposure. One gets to
know the thinking
and ethos of people
from different coun-
tries, and to that, you
add your perspective.
It changes, trans-
forms even, the way
you think and feel. It
shatters stereotypes
that you might have
formed subconscious-
ly, and brings in a
whole new outlook
and world view which
makes you more ma-
ture, and develops
you as a human be-
ing.
EXPOSURE
DISCOVERIES
I also had the time of
my life outside of the
classroom in LA. A
great city, a melt-
ing pot, al-
w a y s
buzzing in a frenzy of
cultural activity. I at-
tended my favourite
bands in concert and
discovered new ones. I
went to my first ever
stand-up comedy show
and realized just how
much I loved the art
form. I explored food
and tasted cuisines
and dishes I’d never
heard of, and relished
all of it. I travelled
through a lot of the US
and those travels as a
student, unencum-
bered by the restric-
tions that apply to a
‘vacation’, enriched
me in ways that I can’t
possibly encapsulate
in a blog post; suffice
it to say, they were all,
each one, eye-opening
experiences that have
moulded the way I per-
ceive, think, react,
and believe.
Naturally, that I
learned and honed the
craft of film-making is
a given. But truth be
told, my life at film
school taught me
more, so much more
than just the subject
I’d gone there to study.
It taught me about my-
self and life, about
hard work and surviv-
al, about friendship
and faith, about love
and loss, about home
and beyond.
All I can share as a
piece of advice is for
all young person who
might get an opportu-
nity to study and live
abroad, to grab it. It
alters perception of
life!
