PRESSURE ON SUKESH TO TAKE BACK COMPLAINTS
AGAINST AAP LEADERS, LAWYER TELLS REPORTERS
New Delhi (ANI): A
Delhi court on Tuesday
listed the matter for ar-
gument on behalf of
Sukesh Chandrashek-
har, accused by the ED
in a Rs 200-crore money
laundering case, on
January 6. Chan-
drashekhar’s advocate
Anant Malik told medi-
apersons that there is
pressure from Tihar jail
authorities on his client
to take back the com-
plaints and allegations
he made against the
Aam Aadmi Party
.
The court also al-
lowed the Enforcement
Directorate (ED) to
take possession of 26
cars recovered from Su-
kesh Chandrashek-
har’s wife Leena Maria
Paul, who is also an ac-
cused in the case, dur-
ing the investigation.
In the initial argu-
ments, the Special Pub-
lic Prosecutor (SPP)
had argued that Rs 30
crore were utilised to
purchase these cars.
Additional Sessions
Judge Shailendra Ma-
lik of Patiala House
Court allowed the appli-
cation of the ED to take
into possession the 26
cars attached from Lee-
na Maria Paul’s farm-
house in Chennai. The
ED has alleged in the
plea that these cars
were purchased with
the proceeds of crime
in the matter and were
then attached during
the case investigation.
In a letter written to
Delhi LG VK Saxena,
Chandrashekhar al-
leged that he paid Rs 10
crore to incarcerated
Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) minister Satyen-
dar Jain as ‘protection
money’ in Tihar Jail.
He also alleged in the
letter that a total
amount of Rs 50 crore
was paid to the AAP as
he was promised a Ra-
jya Sabha seat by the
party.

ORGANISATIONAL POLLS POSTPONED IN VIEW OF STATE AND LOK SABHA ELECTIONS
BJP MEETING LIKELY NEXT MONTH
TO ENDORSE NADDA’S EXTENSION
New Delhi (PTI): Akey
organisational meeting
of the BJP is likely to be
held in the national cap-
italnextmonthinwhich
the extension of party
president JP Nadda’s
tenure is expected to be
endorsed.
Party sources said
the BJP national execu-
tive will also deliberate
over the strategy for
the upcoming state as-
sembly polls and re-
view the ongoing or-
ganisational exercise.
However, a highlight
of the meeting will be
the postponement of
the organisational
polls in view of the
state elections and the
all important Lok Sab-
ha polls in 2024.
Thiswillleadtoanau-
tomatic extension in the
tenure of Nadda whose
three-year term will end
next month, as internal
elections in at least half
of the state units of the
party must be over be-
fore the process of elect-
ing the next national
president begins.
After the Lok Sabha
polls are over in April-
May 2024, the process
of internal polls will
begin. Nadda’s prede-
cessor and Home Min-
ister Amit Shah had
also got an extension to
spearhead the party’s
preparation for the
2019 Lok Sabha polls.
It was only after the
parliamentary elec-
tions were over that the
organisational polls
began and Nadda was
elected unopposed with
Shah joining the Union
Cabinet during Naren-
dra Modi’s second stint
as prime minister.
A seasoned organisa-
tional man who also
shares warm ties with
the Rashtriya Swayam-
sevak Sangh leader-
ship and enjoys Modi’s
confidence, Nadda is
seen to have main-
tained the organisa-
tional momentum and
dynamism that the BJP
was infused with under
his predecessor.
Assembly polls will
held in a number of
states, including Kar-
nataka, Telangana,
Madhya Pradesh, Ra-
jasthan and Chhattis-
garh besides quite a
few in the North East,
before the Lok Sabha
elections. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP National President JP

Why aren’t you removing
‘defamatory’ tweets on
Gahlot? HC asks BJP MLA
New Delhi (PTI): The
Delhi High Court Tues-
day asked BJP MLA Vi-
jender Gupta why he
was not removing the
alleged defamatory
tweets he made against
Delhi Transport Minis-
ter Kailash Gahlot
claiming irregularities
in procurement of 1,000
low floor buses by the
Delhi Transport Corpo-
ration (DTC).
A bench of Justices
Siddharth Mridul and
TalwantSinghaskedthe
counsel for Gupta to
take instructions from
his client about whether
he still wants to keep the
tweets or remove them.
“Why don’t you re-
move the tweets, your
purpose has been
achieved. What you
wanted to do has been
achieved. The question
is why should these
tweets remain? Are you
getting any comments
on it now? Please get in-
structions on this. Your
purpose has been
served,” the bench told
the counsel for Gupta.
Gupta’s counsel said
he will return with the
instructions at the next
hearing.
The HC, hearing an
appeal by the AAP lead-
er against a single judge
order declining to grant
him interim relief on
his defamation lawsuit
against Gupta, listed the
matter for further pro-
ceedings on January 16.
NOTICE TO FACEBOOK
The court also issued notice to Facebook, which
is a party in the matter, and asked Gahlot’s
counsel to file process fees to enable the notice
to be served to the social media platform. Gahlot
had approached the high court in 2021 with his
civil defamation lawsuit against Gupta and sought
Rs 5 crore in damages from the BJP leader for
making “scandalous” statements alleging ir-
regularities in the procurement of 1,000 low floor
buses by the DTC.

Gurugram: The fire-
place (angithi) inside
the room might be the
cause behind the death
of a man and a woman
in a club here, according
to the doctor who con-
ducted the autopsy on
the two.
The brother of the
club owner, Sanjeev
Joshi, aged 50 years and
a woman companion
Ankita, 30, were found
dead, while two other
women were found un-
conscious inside a cabin
in a DLF Phase III club
on Sunday
.
The doctor said a
cocktail of carbon mon-
oxide (from the angithi)
and liquor might have
led to the deaths. The
police had suspected the
deaths were caused by
smoke from a brazier or
some heater inside the
club.
The body of Sanjeev
was handed over to his
family after the post
mortem, while the fam-
ily of Ankita, was yet to
come from Odisha.
Her post mortem will
be conducted on
Wednesday, Dr Deepak
Mathur, a member of
the board of doctors
which conducted the
post mortem, said.

tims of suffocation are

The two sisters are 25
and 23 years old, with
the older one working as
a sales executive and the
younger one as a nurse
at a private hospital’s of-
fice, he said.
According to the po-
lice, the four had gone to
Knite Ryder club to cel-
ebrate the birthday of
one of the sisters the
nurse. The cabin, where
they had gathered
around 2 am on Monday
,
had no ventilation. Due
to the cold, an angithi’
-- a type of stove -- was
lit, they said.
Because Sanjeev
Joshi was the brother of
the club’s owner Rajan
Joshi, members of the
staff did not disturb or
check on them, and left
for their homes, police
had earlier said.
On Monday, around 5
pm, when the club was
being cleaned, the staff
found that the room was
filled with smoke and
informed the club’s
owner, they had said.
The owner helped
rush all four to a private

He is a resident of Ga-

The accused has

New Delhi: At least 28
people from Tamil
Nadu were made to
stand at different plat-
forms of the New Delhi
Railway Station every
day for eight hours for a
month to count the ar-
rival and departure of
trains and their coach-
es, unaware they were
victims of an employ-
ment scam.
They had been told
that this was part of
their training for posi-
tions of travel ticket
examiner (TTE), traffic
assistants and clerks,
and each of them paid
amounts between Rs 2
lakh and Rs 24 lakh to
get the jobs in the Rail-
ways, according to a
complaint filed with the
Delhi Police’s Econom-
ic Offences Wing.
For the one-month
training which took
place between June and
July, the victims were
duped of Rs 2.67 crore
by a group of fraud-
sters, according to the
complaint lodged by
78-year-old M Sub-

.
Subbusamy, an ex-
serviceman, had put the
victims in touch with
the alleged fraudsters,
but he has claimed that
he was unaware that
the entire thing was a
scam and he too had
fallen for their trap.
“Each candidate paid
money ranging from Rs
2 lakh to Rs 24 lakh to
Subbusamy who fur-
ther paid these to a per-
son named Vikas Rana.
Rana posed as a deputy
director in the North-
ern Railway office in
Delhi,” 25-year-old
Snethil Kumar, a victim
from Madurai, said.
Speaking to PTI over
the phone from his
hometown in Virudhu-
nagar district in Tamil
Nadu, Subbusamy said,
“Since my retirement, I
have been helping un-
employed youths of our
locality to find a suita-
ble job without any
monetary interest.”
In the FIR, he has al-
leged that he met a per-
son named Sivaraman,
a resident of Coim-
batore, in Delhi. Sivara-
man claimed to be close
to MPs and ministers
and offered to facilitate
employment in the rail-
ways in lieu of mone-
tary gains.
Subbusamy further
alleged that Sivaraman
asked him to come to
Delhi along with job
seekers. “Initially, I
came with three job
seekers and when the
news of their job train-
ing spread in their vil-
lages in and around Ma-
durai, 25 more candi-
dates joined in,” Sub-
busamy said.
Victims say that Rana
always used to meet
them outside for collec-
tion of money and nev-
er took them inside any
Railway building.

BILAWAL, MARRI
SHOWED THE
TRUE CHARACTER
OF PAKISTAN
akistan won’t change
its stripes was made
clear by its Foreign
Minister Bilawal
Bhutto Zardari with
his harsh, unwarranted and
“uncivilised” comments against
Prime Minister Narendra Modi
at a UN meeting. The External
Affairs Ministry said that Bhut-
to’s comments “mark a new low
even for Pakistan”. After India’s
strong retaliation, Pakistan Peo-
ple’s Party leader Shazia Marri
threatened, “India should not
forget that Pakistan has an atom
bomb. Our nuclear status is not
meant to remain silent. We will
not back down if the need aris-
es.” This war-mongering was
totally unexpected but is in tune
with Pakistan’s true character.
Before pointing at India, Paki-
stan should recall its own record
in East Pakistan (now Bangla-
desh) which seceded after years
of atrocities and human rights
violations. As for Marri’s threat
of a nuclear war it is her naivety
that has been exposed. Marri
forgot the historic surrender by
the Pakistan army in Dhaka and
former Prime Minister Zulfiqar
Ali Bhutto promised to fight a
1000-year war with India.

policy is far from
successful but he
is not the one to backtrack.
With a thriving black-market
his social reform idea is get-
ting defeated. The demand of
alcohol lovers is being clan-
destinely met, albeit at a
price. Those who do not have
access to proper liquor go in
for its spurious version,
which is easily available but
has more often turned out to
be a lethal potion. According
to a report, the state wit-
nessed over 200 hooch deaths
between 2016 and 2021 and
there is a rise in prohibition-
linked corruption. At the
same time the prohibition
policy has led to a sharp fall
in the state’s revenue.
Nitish Kumar would do
well to take a lesson from his
counterpart in Uttar Pradesh
- Yogi Adityanath. The reve-
nue from excise in UP has
been constantly rising over
the years. In 2019 the excise
revenue jumped 38 percent to
Rs 24,000 crore under a new
excise policy which made on-
line bidding mandatory to
get rid of cartels. Its excise
policy for 2021-22 envisages
making safe country-liquor
available to those who love it.
The government expects a
jump of Rs 6,000 crore in ex-
cise revenue, a significant
amount for the state.
It is not that hooch deaths
have not taken place in UP
under BJP rule but the gov-
ernment has taken swift and
effective action to keep hooch
makers in check. With coun-
try-made and foreign-made
liquor easily available there
is no corruption, which also
does a lot of good. Bihar
should persist with prohibi-
tion only if it has other reve-
nue-generating sources.

Speaking during the inaugu-
ration of the Kolkata Interna-
tional Film Festival at the
Netaji indoor Stadium, West
Bengal Chief Minister,
Mamata Banerjee, on Decem-
ber 15 asserted that the state
always fights for humanity,
unity and integrity and does
not bow down to anyone on
these issues. She went on to
say
, “Bengal has been fighting
for unity
, humanity
, diversity
and integrity. This struggle
will go on,” she said.
What was indirectly seen
as a precursor to the pre-re-
leasebashof hisfilmPathaan,
Shah Rukh Khan was also
present at the Kolkata Inter-
national Film Festival. Dur-
ing his speech at the event,
SRK, who is eagerly anticipat-
ing the release of Pathaan,
touched upon the negative
impacts of social media and
the negative energy that
spreads in society through
social media platforms. Since
the release of Pathaan’s song
“Besharam Rang,” the
hashtag “Boycott Pathaan”
has been trending on Twitter.
People on social media are
criticising SRK and Deepika
Padukone’s green and saffron
costumes in the song.
Without referencing
Pathaan, Shah Rukh talked
about the “narrowness of
view” on social media and
even questioned those with a
pessimistic outlook. “Cinema
and advent of articulation
through social media plat-
forms have now become the
foremost expression of hu-
man emotions and experi-
ence. The collective narrative
of our times is shaped by so-
cial media and contrary to the
belief thatthespreadof social
media will affect the cinema
negatively, I believe cinema
has an even more important
role to play now.” SRK said.
Moreover, while respond-
ing to the ‘#BoycottPathaan’
trend against his film, SRK
said, “I have no objection in
saying that whatever the
world says, I, you and all pos-
itive people are (Zinda Hai)
alive.” His final ‘zinda hain,’
conveyed in the style of his
Pathaan character, drew ap-
plause from the huge crowd
gathered there.
HEAT ON IN
PARLIAMENT
To keep the Winter session of
Parliament warm and politi-
cally relevant, Union Fi-
nance Minister Nirmala Si-
tharaman had Wednesday
slammed the Trinamool Con-
gress (TMC) led West Bengal
government and said that it
is not about whose hands the
‘matchbox’ is but how it is
used. While hitting back at
TMC’s Mahua Moitra’s re-
marks in Parliament, Sithar-
aman said that the central
government used ‘matchbox’
to bring light to the lives of
people, whereas in Bengal, it
was used for arson.
Smarting under Mahua
Moitra’s attack on the Cen-
tre, Sitharaman hit back, say-
ing “maachis” of people’s
mandate given to Mamata
Banerjee’s party led to arson
and loot in the state post elec-
tion victory
.
“Recently, the BJP had a
fantastic victory in Gujarat.
Post-election, the elected gov-
ernment came to power
peacefully and was sworn-in.
Now, compare it with what
happened in West Bengal,
post-elections. Now, who used
the matchbox and how, is the
question,” Sitharaman said.
“Whenwehadtheso-called
matchbox, we gave Ujjwala
Yojana, Ujala, PM Kisan,
launched Swachh Bharat Ab-
hiyan, but when you (TMC)
got the matchbox, there was
arson, rape, violence in Ben-
gal post elections. Houses of
BJP workers were set ablaze.
A central minister was at-
tacked,” she added.
Earlier, known for her fiery
speeches, Moitra had heavily
criticised the government for
its assertions of economic
progress. The choice of her
words, jibe and the scathing
attack was backed by data
and included the taunt “Who
is Pappu now”. The counter-
point by the Finance Minister
was equably loquacious, hit-
ting back to “Search Pappu in
her backyard”.
The Opposition lashed out
at the government pointing
to its effort to obtain gross
supplementary expenditure
for the 2022-23 grants worth
around Rs 4.36 lakh crores
for the current fiscal. The ad-
ditional requirements in-
clude net cash outgo aggre-
gating to over Rs 3.25 lakh
crores and gross additional
expenditure, matched by en-
hanced receipts aggregating
to over Rs 1.10 lakh crores.
However, before the action
starts in 2023, politicians
seemingly will all take a
break as we all hope that San-
ta Claus will have enough
gifts for all… especially for
the ones who remained de-
prived in 2022 and for those
who were robbed of their
rights in 2022.

CEO Editor-in-Chief, First India
New Delhi (PTI): Lieu-
tenant Governor VK
Saxena has directed the
chief secretary to recov-
er Rs 97 crore from the
Aam Aadmi Party
(AAP) for political ad-
vertisements it pub-
lished in the guise of
government advertise-
ments in 2016, official
sources said on Tuesday
.
The opposition BJP
in Delhi welcomed the
LG's directions and
claimed that the
amount to be recovered
from the ruling party
will rise to Rs 400 crore.
The LG in his orders
to the chief secretary
also directed that all ad-
vertisements since Sep-
tember 2016 be referred
to the Committee on
Content Regulation in
Government Advertis-
ing (CCRGA), set up by
the Ministry of Infor-
mation and Broadcast-
ing for vetting and as-
certaining if they are in
consonance with Su-
preme Court guidelines.
The Delhi govern-
ment's Directorate of
Information and Pub-
licity (DIP), acting on a
2016 directive from the
CCRGA, had notified
that Rs 97.14 crore (Rs
97,14,69,137) had been
spent or booked on ac-
count of non-conform-
ing advertisements,
the sources said.
Of this, while pay-
ments amounting to
over Rs 42.26 crore had
already been released
by the DIP
, Rs 54.87 crore
for advertisements pub-
lished were still pend-
ing disbursal, a source
said. Asked to recover
the amount, the DIP had
in 2017 directed the AAP
topayoverRs42.26crore
to the state exchequer
immediately and direct-
ly pay the pending
amount of Rs 54.87 crore
to the advertising agen-
cies or publications con-
cerned within 30 days,
the sources said.
However, even after
the lapse of five years
and eight months, the
AAP has not complied
with the DIP order. Such
defiance of a legitimate
order by a registered po-
litical party is not only
contemptuous of the
judiciary, but also does
not augur well for the
health of good govern-
ance, the source added.
The Directorate of
Vigilance (DoV) also in-
quired into complaints
and found that not only
did the DIP not recover
amounts worth Rs 42.26
crore but it also proac-
tively paid the pending
amountof Rs54.87crore,
rather than getting the
AAP to pay it, a source
said.Ineightcases,pay-
ment of Rs 20.53 crore
was made, falsely attrib-
utingittocourt/arbitra-
tion orders.
The DoV found that
Deputy Chief Manish
Sisodia had approved
the payment of another
Rs 27 crore (approxi-
mately) by entering
into fraudulent com-
promise deed or settle-
ment, despite the fact
that there was no litiga-
tion nor there were any
directions from the Su-
preme Court or the
Delhi High Court, the
source claimed.
The DoV also said
that such advertise-
ments that are prima
facie and blatantly vio-
lative of the Supreme
Court order have been
continuously issued by
the DIP on direction of
the ministers. Citing an
example, it said that the
entire cost for the bio-
decomposer project was
Rs 41.62 lakh but the ex-
penditure incurred for
advertising it was Rs
16.94 crore, which is 40
times higher than the
project cost.
Ambulance driver halts to have a drink, serves peg to patient
First India Bureau
New Delhi: An ambu-
lance driver on the way
to a hospital with a pa-
tient on board halted his
vehicle and offered his
injured passenger a peg
while pouring another
for him. The incident
took place near Sarala
Road on Cuttack-Parad-
ip Expressway in the
Tirol area of Odisha’s
Jagatsinghpur district.
In videos that have
gone viral on social me-
dia, the driver is seen
making pegs, which
seems to be an alcoholic
beverage for himself
and the patient, while
parking his vehicle on
the side of a highway in
Tirtol area. While the
driver was seen gulping
his peg down at one go,
the patient, with one leg
plastered, sipped his
drink while lying down
on the stretcher. The bi-
zarre incident came to
light on Monday after
bystanders took videos
and uploaded those on
social media.
When onlookers con-
fronted the driver, he
claimed that the patient
himself had asked for a
drink because of the
pain and wanted to have
a drink to feel relaxed.
Jagatsinghpur Chief
District Medical Officer
(CDMO) Kshetrabasi
Dash said, “Since it was
a private ambulance, we
don’t have much to say.
But the RTO and the po-
lice station concerned
musttakeactionagainst

Angry over the inci-
dent, residents of the
area have demanded a
probe into the incident
andstrictactionagainst
the ambulance driver.
Jugal Kishore Das,
the inspector in charge,
said no formal com-
plaint has been lodged
and an investigation
will be launched only if
an FIR is registered.
Drunk driving is,
however, considered to
be a traffic offence.

New Delhi (PTI):
Addressing a press
conference, AAP chief
spokesperson Saurabh
Bharadwaj termed the
LG's direction a new
love letter and said that
as Valentine's Day nears,
the frequency of such
love letters is only going
to increase. The BJP is
flustered that we have
become a national party
and wrested power from
it in the MCD. LG sahab
is doing everything in
accordance with the
BJP's directions and that
is troubling the people of
Delhi. The more worried
Delhi's people are, the
happier the BJP gets,
Bhardwaj claimed.
He said that the LG's
directions would not
stand in the eyes of law.
The Delhi LG has no
such power. He cannot
issue such directions...
The BJP's various state
governments issued
advertisements that have
been published here. We
want to ask when will the
Rs 22,000 crore spent
on the advertisements be
recovered from them?
The day that money
is recovered, we will
also give Rs 97 crore,
the AAP leader said.
Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal
termed the LG's order
wrong and said it will
be challenged in court.
New Delhi (PTI):
Addressing a press
conference here, Leader
of Opposition in the
Delhi Assembly Ramvir
Singh Bidhuri alleged an
advertisement scam
in the city government
and demanded a CBI
inquiry into it. We see
an advertisement scam
here, and demand a CBI
inquiry into it. We will
approach the LG in this
regard, he said.
Bidhuri also claimed that
the amount to be re-
covered from the ruling
party in Delhi would rise
to Rs 400 crore.
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari
and the Delhi BJP's
working president Viren-
dra Sachdeva were also
present during the press
conference.
The BJP leaders wel-
comed the direction by
the LG to recover Rs 97
crore from the AAP. They
also referred to the Su-
preme Court guidelines
issued a few years ago.
In 2015, the apex court
had postulated guide-
lines to regulate govern-
ment advertising and
eliminate unproductive
expenditure.

PRESSURE ON SUKESH TO TAKE BACK COMPLAINTS AGAINST AAP LEADERS, LAWYER TELLS REPORTERS New Delhi (ANI): A Delhi court on Tuesday listed the matter for ar- gument on behalf of Sukesh Chandrashek- har, accused by the ED in a Rs 200-crore money laundering case, on January 6. Chan- drashekhar’s advocate Anant Malik told medi- apersons that there is pressure from Tihar jail authorities on his client to take back the com- plaints and allegations he made against the Aam Aadmi Party . The court also al- lowed the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to take possession of 26 cars recovered from Su- kesh Chandrashek- har’s wife Leena Maria Paul, who is also an ac- cused in the case, dur- ing the investigation. In the initial argu- ments, the Special Pub- lic Prosecutor (SPP) had argued that Rs 30 crore were utilised to purchase these cars. Additional Sessions Judge Shailendra Ma- lik of Patiala House Court allowed the appli- cation of the ED to take into possession the 26 cars attached from Lee- na Maria Paul’s farm- house in Chennai. The ED has alleged in the plea that these cars were purchased with the proceeds of crime in the matter and were then attached during the case investigation. In a letter written to Delhi LG VK Saxena, Chandrashekhar al- leged that he paid Rs 10 crore to incarcerated Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) minister Satyen- dar Jain as ‘protection money’ in Tihar Jail. He also alleged in the letter that a total amount of Rs 50 crore was paid to the AAP as he was promised a Ra- jya Sabha seat by the party. Party sources said the BJP national execu- tive will also deliberate over the strategy for the upcoming state as- sembly polls and re- view the ongoing or- ganisational exercise. However, a highlight of the meeting will be the postponement of the organisational polls in view of the state elections and the all important Lok Sab- ha polls in 2024. Thiswillleadtoanau- tomatic extension in the tenure of Nadda whose three-year term will end next month, as internal elections in at least half of the state units of the party must be over be- fore the process of elect- ing the next national president begins. After the Lok Sabha polls are over in April- May 2024, the process of internal polls will begin. Nadda’s prede- cessor and Home Min- ister Amit Shah had also got an extension to spearhead the party’s preparation for the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. It was only after the parliamentary elec- tions were over that the organisational polls began and Nadda was elected unopposed with Shah joining the Union Cabinet during Naren- dra Modi’s second stint as prime minister. A seasoned organisa- tional man who also shares warm ties with the Rashtriya Swayam- sevak Sangh leader- ship and enjoys Modi’s confidence, Nadda is seen to have main- tained the organisa- tional momentum and dynamism that the BJP was infused with under his predecessor. Assembly polls will held in a number of states, including Kar- nataka, Telangana, Madhya Pradesh, Ra- jasthan and Chhattis- garh besides quite a few in the North East, before the Lok Sabha elections. Speaking to PTI over the phone from his hometown in Virudhu- nagar district in Tamil Nadu, Subbusamy said, “Since my retirement, I have been helping un- employed youths of our locality to find a suita- ble job without any monetary interest.” In the FIR, he has al- leged that he met a per- son named Sivaraman, a resident of Coim- batore, in Delhi. Sivara- man claimed to be close to MPs and ministers and offered to facilitate employment in the rail- ways in lieu of mone- tary gains. Subbusamy further alleged that Sivaraman asked him to come to Delhi along with job seekers. “Initially, I came with three job seekers and when the news of their job train- ing spread in their vil- lages in and around Ma- durai, 25 more candi- dates joined in,” Sub- busamy said. Victims say that Rana always used to meet them outside for collec- tion of money and nev- er took them inside any Railway building. The External Affairs Ministry said that Bhut- to’s comments “mark a new low even for Pakistan”. After India’s strong retaliation, Pakistan Peo- ple’s Party leader Shazia Marri threatened, “India should not forget that Pakistan has an atom bomb. Our nuclear status is not meant to remain silent. We will not back down if the need aris- es.” This war-mongering was totally unexpected but is in tune with Pakistan’s true character. Before pointing at India, Paki- stan should recall its own record in East Pakistan (now Bangla- desh) which seceded after years of atrocities and human rights violations. As for Marri’s threat of a nuclear war it is her naivety that has been exposed. Marri forgot the historic surrender by the Pakistan army in Dhaka and former Prime Minister Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto promised to fight a 1000-year war with India. TOP TWEETS P ihar Chief Minis- ter Nitish Ku- mar’s prohibition policy is far from successful but he is not the one to backtrack. With a thriving black-market his social reform idea is get- ting defeated. The demand of alcohol lovers is being clan- destinely met, albeit at a price. Those who do not have access to proper liquor go in for its spurious version, which is easily available but has more often turned out to be a lethal potion. According to a report, the state wit- nessed over 200 hooch deaths between 2016 and 2021 and there is a rise in prohibition- linked corruption. At the same time the prohibition policy has led to a sharp fall in the state’s revenue. Nitish Kumar would do well to take a lesson from his counterpart in Uttar Pradesh - Yogi Adityanath. The reve- nue from excise in UP has been constantly rising over the years. In 2019 the excise revenue jumped 38 percent to Rs 24,000 crore under a new excise policy which made on- line bidding mandatory to get rid of cartels. Its excise policy for 2021-22 envisages making safe country-liquor available to those who love it. The government expects a jump of Rs 6,000 crore in ex- cise revenue, a significant amount for the state. It is not that hooch deaths have not taken place in UP under BJP rule but the gov- ernment has taken swift and effective action to keep hooch makers in check. With coun- try-made and foreign-made liquor easily available there is no corruption, which also does a lot of good. Bihar should persist with prohibi- tion only if it has other reve- nue-generating sources. WE SHALL FOLLOW THE BYTES AT BOTH THE OCCASIONS… Speaking during the inaugu- ration of the Kolkata Interna- tional Film Festival at the Netaji indoor Stadium, West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, on Decem- ber 15 asserted that the state always fights for humanity, unity and integrity and does not bow down to anyone on these issues. She went on to say , “Bengal has been fighting for unity , humanity , diversity and integrity. This struggle will go on,” she said. What was indirectly seen as a precursor to the pre-re- leasebashof hisfilmPathaan, Shah Rukh Khan was also present at the Kolkata Inter- national Film Festival. Dur- ing his speech at the event, SRK, who is eagerly anticipat- ing the release of Pathaan, touched upon the negative impacts of social media and the negative energy that spreads in society through social media platforms. Since the release of Pathaan’s song “Besharam Rang,” the hashtag “Boycott Pathaan” has been trending on Twitter. People on social media are criticising SRK and Deepika Padukone’s green and saffron costumes in the song. Without referencing Pathaan, Shah Rukh talked about the “narrowness of view” on social media and even questioned those with a pessimistic outlook. “Cinema and advent of articulation through social media plat- forms have now become the foremost expression of hu- man emotions and experi- ence. The collective narrative of our times is shaped by so- cial media and contrary to the belief thatthespreadof social media will affect the cinema negatively, I believe cinema has an even more important role to play now.” SRK said. Moreover, while respond- ing to the ‘#BoycottPathaan’ trend against his film, SRK said, “I have no objection in saying that whatever the world says, I, you and all pos- itive people are (Zinda Hai) alive.” His final ‘zinda hain,’ conveyed in the style of his Pathaan character, drew ap- plause from the huge crowd gathered there. HEAT ON IN PARLIAMENT To keep the Winter session of Parliament warm and politi- cally relevant, Union Fi- nance Minister Nirmala Si- tharaman had Wednesday slammed the Trinamool Con- gress (TMC) led West Bengal government and said that it is not about whose hands the ‘matchbox’ is but how it is used. While hitting back at TMC’s Mahua Moitra’s re- marks in Parliament, Sithar- aman said that the central government used ‘matchbox’ to bring light to the lives of people, whereas in Bengal, it was used for arson. Smarting under Mahua Moitra’s attack on the Cen- tre, Sitharaman hit back, say- ing “maachis” of people’s mandate given to Mamata Banerjee’s party led to arson and loot in the state post elec- tion victory . “Recently, the BJP had a fantastic victory in Gujarat. Post-election, the elected gov- ernment came to power peacefully and was sworn-in. Now, compare it with what happened in West Bengal, post-elections. Now, who used the matchbox and how, is the question,” Sitharaman said. “Whenwehadtheso-called matchbox, we gave Ujjwala Yojana, Ujala, PM Kisan, launched Swachh Bharat Ab- hiyan, but when you (TMC) got the matchbox, there was arson, rape, violence in Ben- gal post elections. Houses of BJP workers were set ablaze. A central minister was at- tacked,” she added. Earlier, known for her fiery speeches, Moitra had heavily criticised the government for its assertions of economic progress. The choice of her words, jibe and the scathing attack was backed by data and included the taunt “Who is Pappu now”. The counter- point by the Finance Minister was equably loquacious, hit- ting back to “Search Pappu in her backyard”. The Opposition lashed out at the government pointing to its effort to obtain gross supplementary expenditure for the 2022-23 grants worth around Rs 4.36 lakh crores for the current fiscal. The ad- ditional requirements in- clude net cash outgo aggre- gating to over Rs 3.25 lakh crores and gross additional expenditure, matched by en- hanced receipts aggregating to over Rs 1.10 lakh crores. However, before the action starts in 2023, politicians seemingly will all take a break as we all hope that San- ta Claus will have enough gifts for all… especially for the ones who remained de- prived in 2022 and for those who were robbed of their rights in 2022. The opposition BJP in Delhi welcomed the LG's directions and claimed that the amount to be recovered from the ruling party will rise to Rs 400 crore. The LG in his orders to the chief secretary also directed that all ad- vertisements since Sep- tember 2016 be referred to the Committee on Content Regulation in Government Advertis- ing (CCRGA), set up by the Ministry of Infor- mation and Broadcast- ing for vetting and as- certaining if they are in consonance with Su- preme Court guidelines. The Delhi govern- ment's Directorate of Information and Pub- licity (DIP), acting on a 2016 directive from the CCRGA, had notified that Rs 97.14 crore (Rs 97,14,69,137) had been spent or booked on ac- count of non-conform- ing advertisements, the sources said. Of this, while pay- ments amounting to over Rs 42.26 crore had already been released by the DIP , Rs 54.87 crore for advertisements pub- lished were still pend- ing disbursal, a source said. Asked to recover the amount, the DIP had in 2017 directed the AAP topayoverRs42.26crore to the state exchequer immediately and direct- ly pay the pending amount of Rs 54.87 crore to the advertising agen- cies or publications con- cerned within 30 days, the sources said. However, even after the lapse of five years and eight months, the AAP has not complied with the DIP order. Such defiance of a legitimate order by a registered po- litical party is not only contemptuous of the judiciary, but also does not augur well for the health of good govern- ance, the source added. The Directorate of Vigilance (DoV) also in- quired into complaints and found that not only did the DIP not recover amounts worth Rs 42.26 crore but it also proac- tively paid the pending amountof Rs54.87crore, rather than getting the AAP to pay it, a source said.Ineightcases,pay- ment of Rs 20.53 crore was made, falsely attrib- utingittocourt/arbitra- tion orders. The DoV found that Deputy Chief Manish Sisodia had approved the payment of another Rs 27 crore (approxi- mately) by entering into fraudulent com- promise deed or settle- ment, despite the fact that there was no litiga- tion nor there were any directions from the Su- preme Court or the Delhi High Court, the source claimed. The DoV also said that such advertise- ments that are prima facie and blatantly vio- lative of the Supreme Court order have been continuously issued by the DIP on direction of the ministers. Citing an example, it said that the entire cost for the bio- decomposer project was Rs 41.62 lakh but the ex- penditure incurred for advertising it was Rs 16.94 crore, which is 40 times higher than the project cost. Ambulance driver halts to have a drink, serves peg to patient First India Bureau New Delhi: An ambu- lance driver on the way to a hospital with a pa- tient on board halted his vehicle and offered his injured passenger a peg while pouring another for him. The incident took place near Sarala Road on Cuttack-Parad- ip Expressway in the Tirol area of Odisha’s Jagatsinghpur district. In videos that have gone viral on social me- dia, the driver is seen making pegs, which seems to be an alcoholic beverage for himself and the patient, while parking his vehicle on the side of a highway in Tirtol area. While the driver was seen gulping his peg down at one go, the patient, with one leg plastered, sipped his drink while lying down on the stretcher. The bi- zarre incident came to light on Monday after bystanders took videos and uploaded those on social media. When onlookers con- fronted the driver, he claimed that the patient himself had asked for a drink because of the pain and wanted to have a drink to feel relaxed. Jagatsinghpur Chief District Medical Officer (CDMO) Kshetrabasi Dash said, “Since it was a private ambulance, we don’t have much to say. But the RTO and the po- lice station concerned musttakeactionagainst the erring driver.” Angry over the inci- dent, residents of the area have demanded a probe into the incident andstrictactionagainst the ambulance driver. Jugal Kishore Das, the inspector in charge, said no formal com- plaint has been lodged and an investigation will be launched only if an FIR is registered. Drunk driving is, however, considered to be a traffic offence. JEOPARDISING LIFE ‘ON REQUEST’ The ambulance driver has been identified as Dilip Rath. LG sahab is doing everything in accordance with the BJP's directions and that is troubling the people of Delhi. The more worried Delhi's people are, the happier the BJP gets, Bhardwaj claimed. He said that the LG's directions would not stand in the eyes of law. The Delhi LG has no such power. He cannot issue such directions... The BJP's various state governments issued advertisements that have been published here. We want to ask when will the Rs 22,000 crore spent on the advertisements be recovered from them? The day that money is recovered, we will also give Rs 97 crore, the AAP leader said. Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal termed the LG's order wrong and said it will be challenged in court. Bidhuri also claimed that the amount to be re- covered from the ruling party in Delhi would rise to Rs 400 crore. BJP MP Manoj Tiwari and the Delhi BJP's working president Viren- dra Sachdeva were also present during the press conference. The BJP leaders wel- comed the direction by the LG to recover Rs 97 crore from the AAP. They also referred to the Su- preme Court guidelines issued a few years ago.
