AMERICA'S AMISH; MODEL SOCIETY?
PARAGRAPH 1
America's Amish communities live a lifestyle that has changed little since the 18th century; but in other
respects, they are showing other Americans the way forward into the twenty-first....the roadsign is, to say the
least, unexpected ; driving through a prosperous rural part of north America, the last thing you expect to see
beside the highway is a yellow diamond roadsign with a horse and buggy in the middle! watch out for horses
and buggies on the road? what is this? do they exercise racehorses here, or what?
you keep an eye open for horses; for two miles you see nothing, then all of a sudden, look! coming
towards you on the other side of the road, two black horse-drawn buggies! as they go by, your surprise turns
to disbelief; what's going on? are they making a movie about eighteenth century America? the men and the
women in the buggy look like they jumped out of a novel by Fennimore cooper. then, another mile and things
get even stranger; beside a neat-looking farm-house, there is a whole line of buggies. In the door of the
house, half a dozen men in black coats, and with long beards, are talking while some women dressed in a
curiously ancient fashion are sitting on a bench. is This 2015 or 1715?

2015 o 1715?

PARAGRAPH 2
You drive on, wondering what has happened to this part of the united states of America? have you driven
into a time-warp, and without realizing it, gone back 300 years, or is it the people you've just seen who're
stuck in a time warp?
A quick enquiry at the nearest gas station gives you the answer; you are in Amish country, and the men
and women you have just seen are Amish, part of a strange religious group that settled in America in the
18th century, and much of whose lifestyle has changed little since then.
If you had seen the movie “Witness", you would have already known something about the Amish, how
their community is strictly religious and self-contained, how Amish people do without the essentials of
modern-day life such as electricity and cars, and how they do not mix with people outside of their own
community. It is virtually unheard of for anyone to become an Amish, who was not born an Amish.
This is about all that most Americans know about Amish people, unless, that is, they actually live near them
and come across them in daily life. So who are they?

PARAGRAPH 3
In brief, the Amish are members of an ultra-protestant religious movement that first came to
America from the upper Rhine valley over three hundred years ago, and have kept their traditions
and lifestyles. They are very law-abiding citizens, and their community is one in which crime is
almost, though not entirely, inexistent; Amish families live strict lives, following the same code of
morals as their ancestors. in a sense, they are indeed stuck in a time warp.
Yet the most remarkable things to note about the Amish are not their quaint lifestyles and their
home-made clothes, but the expansion of their community, its efficiency, its social cohesion, and
their recent adoption of "green" technology, including wind-power and solar energy. Although they
work the land using traditional horse-drawn machines, and use no chemical fertilizers, their
agriculture is - interestingly - among the most productive in north America!

DANILO AMAYA ACEVEDO
PARAGRAPH 5
The fact that only about 18% of young Amish abandon the austere way of life of their ancestors is not the only reason why the
community is growing so fast. Other factors include increasing life-expectancy, and higher standards of living.
As for machines and modernity, Amish families do not live a primitive life; while they reject the use of mains electricity in the
home, they accept the use of kerosene and efficient wood-burning stoves that provide plenty of light and heat and comfort in their
homes; and they are certainly not out of touch with technology. It was estimated that in 2007, 80% of homes in some Amish
communities were using wind or solar power! in this respect, far from being stuck in the past, they can be considered as one of
the most advanced communities in the world!
As for leisure, it is not one of their major preoccupations! while they do not have televisions or radios, they have other social
activities; yet Amish leaders actually fear that the development of a cult of leisure could rapidly destroy their society.
Contrary to popular belief, the Amish are not cut off from the rest of America; like any farmers, they need markets for their
products and suppliers for their goods; some work for non-Amish employers. Many have non-Amish neighbors. They know what
is going on in the rest of the united states, and like many other Americans, they are alarmed by many modern developments.
This too explains why most young Amish opt to carry on with the hard-working and strict way of life of their community. Though
Amish life is hard in many ways, it is free of most of the pressures and problems of the rest of American society. as long as this
lifestyle is not forced into radical change, many of those who have been brought up in it will continue to see it as an attractive
option.
TRANSLATION

REFLECTION ABOUT
TASK 1

NESTOR FERNANDO ORBES M
Although the text looks simple and easy to understand, there are some expressions difficult to
translate without losing the Main idea, due to the narrative style and the cultural elements it has; I
had difficulties with the idiomatic expressions such as “You keep an eye” “black horse-drawn
buggies” “jumped out of” “neat-looking farm-house” “As they go by”. So, it was important for me to
use some translation strategies such as Translating without interruptions, that is for as long as
possible and correcting surface errors, this strategy helped me to be focus on the text and to save
time at the last stage, I mean the revision stage.
As techniques, first I used the literal translation because it gave me an idea of the sense of the
whole text, it worked good because the text is not so long. On the other hand, for some
expressions like the mentioned above, was useful the oblique translation due to this expression
cannot be directly translated into the Spanish due to the sense of the meaning, so I had to
reformulate the statement but keeping the idea. For instance, “You keep an eye open- translated
as “presta atención a” not literally “mantener un ojo abierto”.
JENNY VIVIANA ULABARRY MEDINA
The translation of a different language to the own, it can be a little complicated if we don`t have in
mind some factors as the culture and own words of that language. Also it can influence the
vocabulary. If we don`t know sufficiently the vocabulary it`s possible that we lose time but we can
win more knowledge related to other words.
So, the problems that I had when I was translating my text were:
• Don`t know the meaning of some words
• Try to be coherent and contextualize the reading
The translate technique that I used was the Oblique Translation Techniques. According to Bosco
Gabriela “Oblique Translation Techniques are used when the structural or conceptual elements of
the source language cannot be directly translated without altering meaning or upsetting the
grammatical and stylistics elements of the target language”
DONEY TORRES MARTÌNEZ
When I translated the text, although I knew the majority of words, there were words I did not know, it
was one of the drawbacks I found because it becomes necessary to look for different sources to
understand the meaning of each word within of the text. In addition, the order of the words is not literal
as in Spanish language, it requires comprehension and interpretation of the intentionality of the writer
to translate it into the target language, for this case Spanish, so that it has textual coherence. Some
expressions were difficult to translate for me because they require more attention and analysis
according to the order within the sentence.
The technique I used in this text was Oblique Translation and of this "Transposition" because when
translating from English to Spanish, a literal translation cannot be kept word for word, because the
grammatical sense of the target language can be altered and it Changes the meaning of the sentence.
Another important technique to take into account in this text was the Adaptation, because some words
do not translate exactly the same as Spanish. These techniques are reflected for example in the
expression "In a sense, they are indeed stuck in a time warp" where it is not possible to translate word
by word and, in that order, it is necessary the correct interpretation of the two languages.
DANILO AMAYA ACEBEDO
I must say that throughout the development of this task I did not know some
expressions, basically due to their several meanings and most importantly
because of its sense within the context of Amish communities.
The support I applied to accomplish this activity was Oblique technique as I
need it as a source that allows me to find the real connection between the
words and the whole text.

Hello dear e-mate
this is my feedback to your job, at the beginning of
the paragraph the sentence " You drive on" should be
translated as " sigues conduciendo,
preguntandote........"
the whole part to have translated is well-done, you
put the right words and it makes a good sense .

Dear Néstor, You job is very interesting, I identify with
you because it wasn´t easy to translate the paragraph
and it´s necessary a careful analysis. The unknow
expressions with some words with no apparent sense
was a difficult for me too. The translation is not an
easy task but with strategies and the correct technique
we will have excellent results.
Thanks

Hi Viviana, The task is very complete, the reflection about the
importance of the vocabulary is real and I am in agree with you
because when we unknown some word isn´t easy the translation
because we lose time and our text can be no comprehensible for
readers.

  • 5. JENNY VIVIANA ULABARRY MEDINA PARAGRAPH 2 You drive on, wondering what has happened to this part of the united states of America? have you driven into a time-warp, and without realizing it, gone back 300 years, or is it the people you've just seen who're stuck in a time warp? A quick enquiry at the nearest gas station gives you the answer; you are in Amish country, and the men and women you have just seen are Amish, part of a strange religious group that settled in America in the 18th century, and much of whose lifestyle has changed little since then. If you had seen the movie “Witness", you would have already known something about the Amish, how their community is strictly religious and self-contained, how Amish people do without the essentials of modern-day life such as electricity and cars, and how they do not mix with people outside of their own community. It is virtually unheard of for anyone to become an Amish, who was not born an Amish. This is about all that most Americans know about Amish people, unless, that is, they actually live near them and come across them in daily life. So who are they?
  • 7. DONEY TORRES MARTÌNEZ PARAGRAPH 3 In brief, the Amish are members of an ultra-protestant religious movement that first came to America from the upper Rhine valley over three hundred years ago, and have kept their traditions and lifestyles. They are very law-abiding citizens, and their community is one in which crime is almost, though not entirely, inexistent; Amish families live strict lives, following the same code of morals as their ancestors. in a sense, they are indeed stuck in a time warp. Yet the most remarkable things to note about the Amish are not their quaint lifestyles and their home-made clothes, but the expansion of their community, its efficiency, its social cohesion, and their recent adoption of "green" technology, including wind-power and solar energy. Although they work the land using traditional horse-drawn machines, and use no chemical fertilizers, their agriculture is - interestingly - among the most productive in north America!
  • 9. DANILO AMAYA ACEVEDO PARAGRAPH 5 The fact that only about 18% of young Amish abandon the austere way of life of their ancestors is not the only reason why the community is growing so fast. Other factors include increasing life-expectancy, and higher standards of living. As for machines and modernity, Amish families do not live a primitive life; while they reject the use of mains electricity in the home, they accept the use of kerosene and efficient wood-burning stoves that provide plenty of light and heat and comfort in their homes; and they are certainly not out of touch with technology. It was estimated that in 2007, 80% of homes in some Amish communities were using wind or solar power! in this respect, far from being stuck in the past, they can be considered as one of the most advanced communities in the world! As for leisure, it is not one of their major preoccupations! while they do not have televisions or radios, they have other social activities; yet Amish leaders actually fear that the development of a cult of leisure could rapidly destroy their society. Contrary to popular belief, the Amish are not cut off from the rest of America; like any farmers, they need markets for their products and suppliers for their goods; some work for non-Amish employers. Many have non-Amish neighbors. They know what is going on in the rest of the united states, and like many other Americans, they are alarmed by many modern developments. This too explains why most young Amish opt to carry on with the hard-working and strict way of life of their community. Though Amish life is hard in many ways, it is free of most of the pressures and problems of the rest of American society. as long as this lifestyle is not forced into radical change, many of those who have been brought up in it will continue to see it as an attractive option.

  • 12. NESTOR FERNANDO ORBES M Although the text looks simple and easy to understand, there are some expressions difficult to translate without losing the Main idea, due to the narrative style and the cultural elements it has; I had difficulties with the idiomatic expressions such as “You keep an eye” “black horse-drawn buggies” “jumped out of” “neat-looking farm-house” “As they go by”. So, it was important for me to use some translation strategies such as Translating without interruptions, that is for as long as possible and correcting surface errors, this strategy helped me to be focus on the text and to save time at the last stage, I mean the revision stage. As techniques, first I used the literal translation because it gave me an idea of the sense of the whole text, it worked good because the text is not so long. On the other hand, for some expressions like the mentioned above, was useful the oblique translation due to this expression cannot be directly translated into the Spanish due to the sense of the meaning, so I had to reformulate the statement but keeping the idea. For instance, “You keep an eye open- translated as “presta atención a” not literally “mantener un ojo abierto”.
  • 13. JENNY VIVIANA ULABARRY MEDINA The translation of a different language to the own, it can be a little complicated if we don`t have in mind some factors as the culture and own words of that language. Also it can influence the vocabulary. If we don`t know sufficiently the vocabulary it`s possible that we lose time but we can win more knowledge related to other words. So, the problems that I had when I was translating my text were: • Don`t know the meaning of some words • Try to be coherent and contextualize the reading The translate technique that I used was the Oblique Translation Techniques. According to Bosco Gabriela “Oblique Translation Techniques are used when the structural or conceptual elements of the source language cannot be directly translated without altering meaning or upsetting the grammatical and stylistics elements of the target language”
  • 14. DONEY TORRES MARTÌNEZ When I translated the text, although I knew the majority of words, there were words I did not know, it was one of the drawbacks I found because it becomes necessary to look for different sources to understand the meaning of each word within of the text. In addition, the order of the words is not literal as in Spanish language, it requires comprehension and interpretation of the intentionality of the writer to translate it into the target language, for this case Spanish, so that it has textual coherence. Some expressions were difficult to translate for me because they require more attention and analysis according to the order within the sentence. The technique I used in this text was Oblique Translation and of this "Transposition" because when translating from English to Spanish, a literal translation cannot be kept word for word, because the grammatical sense of the target language can be altered and it Changes the meaning of the sentence. Another important technique to take into account in this text was the Adaptation, because some words do not translate exactly the same as Spanish. These techniques are reflected for example in the expression "In a sense, they are indeed stuck in a time warp" where it is not possible to translate word by word and, in that order, it is necessary the correct interpretation of the two languages.
  • 15. DANILO AMAYA ACEBEDO I must say that throughout the development of this task I did not know some expressions, basically due to their several meanings and most importantly because of its sense within the context of Amish communities. The support I applied to accomplish this activity was Oblique technique as I need it as a source that allows me to find the real connection between the words and the whole text.
