1.0 Introduction
Data logger is an electronic device that records the measurements over time. When the
measurements are successfully obtained, then the readings will be transfer to computer.
Data logger carried out the function of converting a physical quantity to electrical signal.
Data logger can functioning on physical, chemical and biological parameters such as in
measuring temperature, humidity, current, voltage, pressure, dissolved oxygen, soil moisture
and many more. Data logger present in various forms where it can be a compact device of a
single-unit, stand-alone device or multi-channel device of data collection that equipped with
one or more sensor in one device.
The usage of data logger in Science Education brings a lot benefits especially for the
teachers and students. The first advantage of using data logger is for the better
understanding of Science concept and scientific experiment. When data logger is use, the
scientific experiment can be carried out easily and more efficient where the data obtain will
be more accurate rather than using the manual measurement. Besides, the usage of this
technology will bring the greater interest of students in doing practical work. Students
nowadays are widely exposed to the technology, so that when the data logger is being
applied in education, this will give a positive effect in students’ academic performance.
Other than that, the applied of data logger will also help in enhancing computer literacy for
students and also for the teachers. It is also can improve the graphing skills of the students
where they do not need to create graph manually but by the presence of data logger the
graph can be plot easily using the computer.
Even there are a lot of advantages can be obtained through the data logger usage,
there are also some disadvantage on the usage of it. The first disadvantage is sometimes,
some people may not like working on computer system. For them, the usage of computer
makes them feel that the task is a burden especially for those who did not expert on
computer skills. Other than that, the data logger usage will reduce the practice of graphing
skills as they just use the computer to obtain the data and graph will automatically create
instead they are plotting the graph manually. Other than that, usage of data logger also
causes the loss the conventional methods of data collection. For example, in measuring the
temperature, they will become less expert in reading the thermometer because they have
well-use in using the data logger where the computer system will directly shows the reading
on the screen.

2.1 Engage – Brainstorming
Stream A Stream B
There are two different pictures of the same natural resources of water which is
stream. From this observation based on the physical appearance of the stream, it
can be assume that Stream A is a polluted stream while stream B is non-polluted
stream. From this assumption, there are some questions that had been created and
can be define as problem statement:
1) What are the parameters that can be used in determining that the stream is
polluted or unpolluted?
2) Is there any physical change occur when the water are polluted?
3) Is there any chemical change occur when the water are polluted?
4) What are the differences between polluted water and unpolluted water?
2.2 Empower – Planning and Doing Experiment
Title: Water and wastewater Analysis (Physical and Chemical Parameter)
Objective
i. To compare several differences between polluted and unpolluted
stream.
ii. To learn the techniques of water quality evaluation by using physical
and chemicals parameters.
3
Introduction:
Water is covering over 70 percent of Earth’s surface. Form all the water on Earth,
only 3.0% is freshwater. Freshwater is including either groundwater or readily
accessible water such as lakes, rivers or streams. Water is important natural
resources of life either for human, animals or plants that will bring a lot of benefits
towards the Earth. As there are a lot of development in agricultural, industrial and
any other factors, the water quality are declining and it brings a lot of negative effects
towards the Earth ecosystem.
In this experiment, the water analysis that will be carried out is related to the
water stream. There are several factors that affect the kinds of aquatic life that can
live in stream such as the water pH, temperature, oxygen concentration and many
more. So here, to know how the stream are having the high potential for the survival
of aquatic life, water and wastewater analysis should be carried out to measure the
physical and chemical characteristics of the stream. The physical parameters involve
the test on water temperature, pH and turbidity while chemical parameter is related to
the testing of amount of oxygen dissolved in the water.
Materials

Discussion
1) What is the definition of water pollution?
2) What is the factor of water pollution?
3) State two types of pollution sources. Explain briefly.
4) Give examples of types of pollutants that can affect stream.
5) Based on the result obtained, determine which water sample have been
polluted. State why?
6) What is the effect of water pollution to the ecosystem?
7) Based on your opinion, list three differences of water-quality that are
typical of a polluted stream and unpolluted stream?
8) How agricultural activity can affect the water-quality? Give one example.
9) In your opinion, what is the biggest factor that contributes to the water
pollution of stream?
10) In your opinion, what are another parameter that can be used to measure
the water-quality besides physical and chemical? Explain briefly about
the parameter.
7
2.3 Enhance
From this experiment, water can be analysis through some method which is based on
physical parameter and chemical parameter. There is nothing to do to drastically
stop the pollution. However, there are a lot of ways to reduce the pollution for the
sake of our ecosystem and to be inherited for the future generation. The first step to
be taken in reducing water pollution is we must not litter. Any litter should be thrown
properly and any waste that can be reuse or recycle must be concern so that it will
not contaminating the water sources. For the agricultural activity, it is also one of the
contributors of water pollution when this activity is not managed properly. The use of
pesticide in agricultural can increase the potential of water pollution. So that, to
reduce the pollution occurs by the agricultural activity, farmer must be concern on the
type of pesticide used. They can apply organic pesticide for their crop to reduce the
water pollution. Besides, in preventing water pollution in industrial activity factory
employer must be concern of the waste that will be dispose from their factory. The
proper disposal method of the industrial waste will help in reducing water pollution
and preserve our natural resources of water. Other than that, the government side
also must take a serious action by enforcing law. This is important to create
awareness to citizen so that they know the importance of preserving our natural
resources.
2.4 Unique Features of This Activity
1) In this experiment, there are several method used in analysing water and
wastewater based on temperature, pH, turbidity and dissolve oxygen.
2) More than one sensor are being used in one experiment which is thermometer,
pH meter, turbidity meter and DO meter.
3) Based on the data obtained, graph can be created directly by using computer.
Graphs do not need to plot manually.
4) Data analysis can be easily carried out based on the graph plotted and
comparison between two samples can be determined systematically.
5) Repetition of experiment is carried out to obtain the accurate result.

  • 3. 1 1.0 Introduction Data logger is an electronic device that records the measurements over time. When the measurements are successfully obtained, then the readings will be transfer to computer. Data logger carried out the function of converting a physical quantity to electrical signal. Data logger can functioning on physical, chemical and biological parameters such as in measuring temperature, humidity, current, voltage, pressure, dissolved oxygen, soil moisture and many more. Data logger present in various forms where it can be a compact device of a single-unit, stand-alone device or multi-channel device of data collection that equipped with one or more sensor in one device. The usage of data logger in Science Education brings a lot benefits especially for the teachers and students. The first advantage of using data logger is for the better understanding of Science concept and scientific experiment. When data logger is use, the scientific experiment can be carried out easily and more efficient where the data obtain will be more accurate rather than using the manual measurement. Besides, the usage of this technology will bring the greater interest of students in doing practical work. Students nowadays are widely exposed to the technology, so that when the data logger is being applied in education, this will give a positive effect in students’ academic performance. Other than that, the applied of data logger will also help in enhancing computer literacy for students and also for the teachers. It is also can improve the graphing skills of the students where they do not need to create graph manually but by the presence of data logger the graph can be plot easily using the computer. Even there are a lot of advantages can be obtained through the data logger usage, there are also some disadvantage on the usage of it. The first disadvantage is sometimes, some people may not like working on computer system. For them, the usage of computer makes them feel that the task is a burden especially for those who did not expert on computer skills. Other than that, the data logger usage will reduce the practice of graphing skills as they just use the computer to obtain the data and graph will automatically create instead they are plotting the graph manually. Other than that, usage of data logger also causes the loss the conventional methods of data collection. For example, in measuring the temperature, they will become less expert in reading the thermometer because they have well-use in using the data logger where the computer system will directly shows the reading on the screen.
  • 4. 2 2.0 Experiment by Using Data Logger 2.1 Engage – Brainstorming Stream A Stream B There are two different pictures of the same natural resources of water which is stream. From this observation based on the physical appearance of the stream, it can be assume that Stream A is a polluted stream while stream B is non-polluted stream. From this assumption, there are some questions that had been created and can be define as problem statement: 1) What are the parameters that can be used in determining that the stream is polluted or unpolluted? 2) Is there any physical change occur when the water are polluted? 3) Is there any chemical change occur when the water are polluted? 4) What are the differences between polluted water and unpolluted water? 2.2 Empower – Planning and Doing Experiment Title: Water and wastewater Analysis (Physical and Chemical Parameter) Objective i. To compare several differences between polluted and unpolluted stream. ii. To learn the techniques of water quality evaluation by using physical and chemicals parameters.
  • 5. 3 Introduction: Water is covering over 70 percent of Earth’s surface. Form all the water on Earth, only 3.0% is freshwater. Freshwater is including either groundwater or readily accessible water such as lakes, rivers or streams. Water is important natural resources of life either for human, animals or plants that will bring a lot of benefits towards the Earth. As there are a lot of development in agricultural, industrial and any other factors, the water quality are declining and it brings a lot of negative effects towards the Earth ecosystem. In this experiment, the water analysis that will be carried out is related to the water stream. There are several factors that affect the kinds of aquatic life that can live in stream such as the water pH, temperature, oxygen concentration and many more. So here, to know how the stream are having the high potential for the survival of aquatic life, water and wastewater analysis should be carried out to measure the physical and chemical characteristics of the stream. The physical parameters involve the test on water temperature, pH and turbidity while chemical parameter is related to the testing of amount of oxygen dissolved in the water. Materials Water sample A and B Thermometer pH meter Calibration solutions (pH buffer) Turbidity meter Calibration solution for turbidity meter Dissolved oxygen meter Methods Physical parameters A. Temperature 1. Use the thermometer to take the temperature reading in a free-flowing portion of the stream. 2. Record the result.

Explain briefly about the parameter.
  • 9. 7 2.3 Enhance From this experiment, water can be analysis through some method which is based on physical parameter and chemical parameter. There is nothing to do to drastically stop the pollution. However, there are a lot of ways to reduce the pollution for the sake of our ecosystem and to be inherited for the future generation. The first step to be taken in reducing water pollution is we must not litter. Any litter should be thrown properly and any waste that can be reuse or recycle must be concern so that it will not contaminating the water sources. For the agricultural activity, it is also one of the contributors of water pollution when this activity is not managed properly. The use of pesticide in agricultural can increase the potential of water pollution. So that, to reduce the pollution occurs by the agricultural activity, farmer must be concern on the type of pesticide used. They can apply organic pesticide for their crop to reduce the water pollution. Besides, in preventing water pollution in industrial activity factory employer must be concern of the waste that will be dispose from their factory. The proper disposal method of the industrial waste will help in reducing water pollution and preserve our natural resources of water. Other than that, the government side also must take a serious action by enforcing law. This is important to create awareness to citizen so that they know the importance of preserving our natural resources. 2.4 Unique Features of This Activity 1) In this experiment, there are several method used in analysing water and wastewater based on temperature, pH, turbidity and dissolve oxygen. 2) More than one sensor are being used in one experiment which is thermometer, pH meter, turbidity meter and DO meter. 3) Based on the data obtained, graph can be created directly by using computer. Graphs do not need to plot manually. 4) Data analysis can be easily carried out based on the graph plotted and comparison between two samples can be determined systematically. 5) Repetition of experiment is carried out to obtain the accurate result.
