Q.Tell us something about your
architecture designs in Xinhua
Mall and Mall 1? How are they
different from the rest?
A. Both Xinhua Mall and Mall 1 are the forums for high-
end fashion and entertainment. The main difference be-
tween the two is the magnitude. Xinhua Mall is an
18-storey mix-development commercial
project with four levels of underground
parking. It has five levels of shopping with a beautiful
atrium that visually links together all the floors. It has glam-
orous and modern interior decorated with some vibrant
colours.The interior blends art with
hi-technology.
Xinhua Mallis a theme mall where the owner has
been very selective about the brands to be accommodated
within whereas other buildings in the city don’t usually
reflect any specific theme.Their fundamental criteria is
“first come, first served” irrespective of the nature of
business hence no particular theme develops.
Mall 1, located at Main Boulevard, Gulberg has three
levels of shopping.
The main chunk of the mall is
occupied by the Pakistan Fash-
ion Design Council (PFDC) that
became catalyst to bringing to-
gether various famous brands
and fashion related activities like
fashion shows, exhibitions and
much more.
Saeed
Excellence in architecture
8Interview
Q.What’s your philosophy be-
hind the designs that you create
for the malls?
A.I wanted to create a building that not only fulfils the
shopping needs but at the same time visiting the building
should also be a joyful experience. Linear showrooms at
the front quickly grasps the attention of the visitor and the
shopping experience starts there and then. I wanted to
make my projects a hub, so people should not leave the
premises and explore the options under one roof. Since
all the brands are brought together as one, people quickly
find their desired item after a bit of search.
Q. How far you see your design
infrastructure progressing in
future?
A. Both Xinhua Mall and Mall 1 have
very rapidly become fashion hubs for the
city and these are the trendsetters for
future buildings, particularly in Gulberg.
This phenomenon has occurred due to the fast growing
fashion industry, which is in demand of spaces and places
to accommodate their products and activities for instance
fashion shows, fashion previews, exhibitions, etc.
Q. How have you amalgamated
fashion and entertainment
together at Mall 1?
A.Mall 1 is the extension of the same concept as far as
the space layout of the front showrooms are concerned.
The building was fortunate enough
to attract PFDC that became
another hub of fashion activity,
which attracted the fashion lovers
in town, not only through its
exhibits but also through its sleek
and modern architectural design.
Q.Tell us something about your
design philosophy in context
with fashion at Xinhua Mall?
A.Xinhua Mall project right from conceiving to its
becoming a reality has been a very exciting experience for
me.The concept behind was to create a shopping hub that
would not only be a profitable financial venture for the
developer and the shop owners but also a spot where
shopping should be an entertaining experience which
would be done by creating an exciting ambiance and
finally carefully selecting the most demanded brands. For
that I must give credit to Nadim Malik for giving me a free
hand in designing construction budget and Nadim Qadir
for sharing his inspiring ideas that made this project an
ultimate destination for fashion lovers.
Q.Were these fashion
infrastructures seen before in
Pakistan or are you the pioneer
of bringing this architecture in
the country?
A. This kind of phenomenon has never been witnessed
in the country before. There have been some malls in
the past but did not run successful due to an indifference
towards many ground realities and the needs of the end
users. Perhaps it was the right time for the right project
with the right client where I was at liberty to experiment my
concepts that I developed over a long period of time with
experience.
Q.What’s next in your projects?
A.Now this new concept has stimulated many clients
who are ready to harvest the benefits of this successful
concept without any risk. Mall-94 adjacent to Mall 1 is my
new upcoming project, which will be very compact but at
the same time an advanced version of its
predecessors.Value Heights in DHA, Lahore is also
another very ambitious and futuristic project designed by
myself, which would be in the market shortly. It would
be the largest in the city comprising
of about 700,000 square feet on three
acres of land. I foresee a very flourishing market of
this category of buildings in coming times.

Bollywood Director
Imtiaz Ali Leaves Wife
For Iman Ali
The linkup of gorgeous Pakistani beauty Iman Ali with the “Rockstar”
famed Bollywood director Imtiaz Ali has resulted in his split with wife,
Preety for the Pakistani fashion model Iman Ali. Both Iman Ali and Imtiaz
Ali are now too close to be linked up by both Indian and Pakistani media
and are most likely to get married very soon. However, the news has cre-
ated anxiety for Imtiaz Ali’s father Mansoor Ali who was not expecting his
son and daughter-in-law to get separated.
Imtiaz Ali is known for directing famous Bollywood films such as “Love
Aj Kal”, “Jab We Met” and “Rockstar”. His marital life was already having
problems and the divorce with wife Preety was kept secret as they did not
want their 11-year-old daughter Ida to be affected.
Just before the release of film “Rockstar”, Iman Ali and Imtiaz Ali visited
the Nizamuddin dargah in Delhi and now Iman Ali and Imtiaz Ali both are
enjoying the intimacy.

Pakistani student is
Britain’s latest
singing sensation
“A new singing sensation has risen on the hori-
zon, instantly causing a stir on the Internet with
a song that is set to determine a new career
path for the humble singer”
Shahid Nazir Ahmad, who came as a student to
London a year ago, is not an established singer and never
dreamed of becoming one. He never imagined that he will
one day count former pop sensation Alesha Dixon as a fan
as well as more than three million members of the public
who have watched his sensational song ‘One Pound Fish
Man’ onYouTube, propelling the hardworking student into
the mainstream music scene.
Working in minorities-dominated East Ham’s fish mar-
ket, the Lahori student made his song to attract potential
customers to the discount-rate fish. It is clear that Ahmad
took his inspiration for the song from street-hawkers and
stall-sellers occupying the busy streets of inner Lahore
and other urban shopping areas.
The standout version has to be the one done by singer
turned TV superstar Alesha Dixon, now a judge on the
popular X Factor. Alesha Dixon has done a cover version
of the song on the BBC 1Xtra Breakfast Show. But that’s a
small thing as compared to what else the budding singer
has achieved. After clearing three rounds of auditions,
the singer has already recorded his song for the X Factor,
likely to be shown in the second week of August. A pirate
video of Shahid’s X Factor audition is out, showing the
house warming up to his lyrics.
Gushes the student:“X Factor is the world’s largest music
stage at the moment with millions tuning in every week.
I cannot believe how lucky I have been to be part of this
show.”
The part-time worker found a job at the fish market three
months ago.“On the first day I just did a little bit of
shouting to attract customers, shouting ‘one pound fish’,
and then on the second and third day I made up this
‘One Pound Fish’ song myself, not really
expecting anything.When I started
singing everyone liked it.
Originally from Pattoki (‘the city of flowers’), a small town
near Lahore, the hard working boy is getting his moment

of glory - and he loves it. His song has become such a
hit on the Internet that he now has little time to sell fish
on Queens Market on Green Street as he is mobbed for
photographs and impromptu performances of his song all
the time. His boss is happy to keep him on though, for his
new-found status as a celebrity, and for the same helping
with sale of the price-cut fish!
Shahid speaks in broken English but he is able to convey
his meaning and has increasingly become more confident.
He believes that God put the idea of the song in his mind,
it couldn’t have happened otherwise.“Singing has been
my hobby since childhood and I regularly sang Naats/
Nasheeds while growing up. I also enjoyed singing popular
Urdu and Punjabi songs. It wasn’t until I made up ‘One
Pound Fish’ and started singing it that my voice was ap-
preciated. I am proud and happy so many people love my
song.”
Shahid was surprised when
he was told by a friend that
people were uploading his
song onYouTube and that it
had gone viral.“I only found
out about what was
happening on the Internet
when the views of the first
uploaded video hit 40,000.
I was surprised and happy
when I saw it, but never
thought that it would become
so popular”
As the video gained more views, Shahid’s fans started
descending upon his fish stall.“First, people from all over
London started coming just to meet me, then they started
coming from around the country. They wanted me to sign
autographs and take photographs with them. Then different
people started bringing their friends down to meet me.”
Shahid hopes that at some point he gets an opportunity
to do a duet with Alesha Dixon and reckons it would be a
special collaboration.“I want to send this message espe-
cially to Alesha Dixon: I am a big fan, loved your version of
the song and I humbly request that we sing it together. She
is a very big name and I think she has a very big heart, so
won’t turn down my request.”
The unassuming fish salesman is enjoying meeting the
countless people who come to his fish stall. He is making
a lot of new friends and putting a smile on the faces of a
rapidly growing fan base.“Lots of people come to meet
me. Interestingly enough there are more non-Asians who
have become fans. I remember one man came down
from Leeds with his entire family, took photographs, an
autograph and even offered me a job. I can’t leave London
now,” he says in Punjabi.
The easygoing singer laughs that women are showing a
lot of interest in him and he has received many marriage
proposals. At a recent Asian mela, attended by thousands
of British Asians, Shahid had girls going crazy for him.
“Recently, a man came to me and gave me a photo of a
pretty girl and said she wants to marry you. I am getting
lots of marriage proposals, but I am not interested. I see
it as a blessing that such a simple English language song
has made so many people happy.”
Shahid also dreams of one day collaborating with Paki-
stani music stars.“There are so many great singers I
admire and would love to work with. I like Rahat Fateh
Ali Khan. I did a radio interview and sang ‘Main Tenu
Samjhawan’, and got a good response. I also sang a song
of Abrar-ul-Haq on the radio. I wouldn’t mind working with
both these great artists.”
“I like singing all languages, but Urdu and Punjabi are
my mother tongues. English is a new language for me
and I am just learning. I can’t do cover versions of Eng-
lish songs, so it is better for me to create new songs in
English.”Shahid’s song alone would not have taken him
anywhere if he were not a charming performer too.“I did a
lot of acting in school and even won a certificate for being
the best actor/performer at school. So I feel music and act-
ing are things I can do really well.”
What are his future plans, then? “I believe today my suc-
cess is a direct result of my mother’s prayers, she has
always prayed for me. I have been down, but my mother’s
prayers have carried me through difficulties and bought me
here today. The blessings of God, my mother and father
have given me the energy to carry on and will continue to
guide me.”

HTC is doing a great job in the market where android

Pakistan
Institute of
Fashion and
Design
Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) is a very
unique institute, which has visibly revolutionized fashion
and design education in Pakistan.
2012 is a year of great significance for PIFD. For the first
time it displayed the work of graduation students of three
new departments apart from Fashion Design and Fashion
Marketing and Merchandising, namely Jewellery Design
and Gemological Sciences, FurnitureDesignand
ManufacturingandTextileDesign.Itholds
greathopesandaspirationsespeciallyfor
graduatingstudentsfromthesenew
departments.
This year, forty seven students of Fashion Design, made a
collection of four garments each. They dedicated their final
semester to develop and execute their creations. A spe-
cial feature is that all students designed and tailored the
garments themselves. The amount of effort put in by every
student was evident in the final presentation.
As for other detais,it is pertinent to share that the
graduating batch of Fashion Marketing and Merchandising
comprised of seventeen students. They havel presented
the final year project to the jury comprising of French
consultants, eminent fashion industry leaders and senior
faculty members.
Their projects are diverse in nature and not only capture
the essence of academic program but also realities of
the corporate world. It covers all the aspects of fashion
marketing from design, costing, market survey and promo-
tions.
The department of Jewelry Design and Gemological Sci-
ences showcased the work of twenty five students. The
pioneering graduating batch from this department made
a collection of five pieces each. Four are jewellery pieces
whereas the fifth one is an experimental, non wearable
article. The students were given a semester to develop
and execute a collection which was hand manufactured
from the initial stage to the last. Each piece is a labor of
love with hours of hard work and conscientious detailing
put into finishing the pieces. And that is why three out of
them adorn the pages of this magazine. As for others, some
of the toppers will appear in the next issue of this online
publication.

Movable jewelryAnka Naeem
My theme for the thesis project is movable jewelry. The basic inspiration has
been taken from the simple moving objects like movable toys, and such playful
things in which the movement of few elements create such an eye movement
that it makes the viewer enjoy the sight. My pieces have
mechanisms involved, on the basis of which, the
decorative elements are going to move up and
down, swing and rotate. All the pieces will have a
silver or gold finishing with the rings actually made
from silver and bangles out of copper.
Movable jewelry is new to be found in Pakistan, as it will have its focus on the
movement of the elements rather than the beauty, which is the top priority of
our local market.
My collection targets people who are fond of unique and artistic pieces
and are trend setters. My concept behind making movable jewelry
is to provide the wearer with not only a decorative, but also a
playful, eye catching jewelry piece.
Brides on
MoveNimrah Muzammil
“Twenty years from now you will be more
disappointed by the things that you didn’t
do than by the ones you did do. So throw off
the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbour.
Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore.
Dream.
Discover.”-- MarkTwain
My father read this quotation about twenty five years ago and as a result, I grew
up travelling around Pakistan, exploring and being mesmerized by our culture.
As a child, my greatest fear was overtaking or travelling behind a truck - those
brides on move while travelling on slopes, which eventually developed my as-
sociation with the art form they carry. A bejewelled traditional Pakistani truck is
not just a vehicle. It is an unfolding grandeur, an emblem of a driver’s dream of
an elaborately adorned Pakistani bride.“Brides on Move” is an amalgamation of
vibrant Pakistani culture (of truck art) with innovation in design so as to
make jewellery that would keep up with the pace of modern day life
and address the issues of present consumer.

for jewellery a tool
for dealing with
nervous habits
The topic of my collection is jewelery a tool was dealing with
nervous habits. The pieces have a dual function firstly like all
other jewelery pieces they can be worn as an adornment and
secondly they are functional pieces, each can help you deal
with a nervous habit you suffer from.
Taking inspiration from psychological theories and therapies,
building it up with technical knowledge, my collection provides
five different concepts to deal with five different nervous habits
namely nail biting, knuckle cracking, scratching, pen clicking
and lastly twisting. The pieces are just not a combination of
three basic shapes namely circle, square and triangle but
objects that closely connect with human body providing an
interactive and motivating on the spot preventive measure for
unconscious nervous habits. The pieces have changeable
tops studded with rubies in order to provide the wearer with
an option for formal and informal wearing.
The pieces are named according to the habit they are
designed.
Onychophagia nail biting
The practice of biting one’s nails especially when done habitu-
ally.Onyx means nail and phagia means eating.
Trichotillo for scratching
Repeated urge to pull or twist hair until it breaks off
Trichotill means to pull out
Crepitus for knuckle cracking
Medical term to explain cracking or popping sound under skin
From Latin word crepare
to crack, creak.
Dexedrine for clicking
Dextroamphetamine is a medicine that helps to
increase the ability to pay attention,
concentrate, stay focused, and stop fidgeting.
Akathisia to keep hands busy
It is a movement disorder and feeling of restlessness.
Constant urge to be moving
kithisia , ultimately from Greek cathedra which means seat.
The name of this piece isTrichotillo
and is used for scratching.
Trichotillomania is a hair-pulling
disorder, repeated urge to pull or
twist hair until it breaks off.Trichotill
means to pull out.The ring is
design to hinder the habit of
scratching.It is inspired by aversion
therapy in which a nagative
stimulus is
associated with the habit.Wearing
this ring if you continously scratch
the spring utilizes energy and after
a while the joint will start hurting
and hindering the action.
The ring has a changeable screw and the spring inside can
also be changed with hard or soft to control the stimulus.

is diverted to another idea. Here the
Movement and interactive relation-
ship with the body has been
the most important element
exploring the mechanical
structure which becomes
the most enjoyable form as
a motivator to divert the
person from biting nails.
The mechanism was de-
vised by studying the pieces
of DuknooYoon (2002) and with
experimentation.There are two nails one
with stones and other is plain. For the piece hand
anatomy and joint movement was studies to allow maximum
movement, making it comfortable to use.
This piece is designed for the habit of clicking which according
to observation was seen in class situation and time when you
are concentrating and your hand are free.It is named Dex-
edrine which is from Dextroamphetamine which is a medicine
that helps to increase the ability to pay attention, concentrate,
stay focused, and stop fidgeting. It is self invented mechanism
after studying various clicking mechanism, inspired from the
concept of sublimation (Freud), according to which socially
unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously trans-
formed into socially acceptable actions or behavior. The click-
ing habit is replaced in a ring which has a much low sound
thus less distracting and replicated the original habit of clicking
This ring is designed for knuckle cracking and its named
Crepitus. This word is a medical term used to explain cracking
or popping sound under skin.It is from Latin word crepare to
crack, creak.
This is a self though and designed mechanism inspired from
aversion therapy (negative stimulus)
In which when you crack your knuckle and the fingers come
on the ring, the spring gets pressed and pinches, resulting
in the person getting diverted. It has a changeable screw for
wear variation.Nervous habits as seen in the research part
are most common in leisure time like watching television. Thus
this table piece is named Akathisia.Akathisia is a movement
disorder and feeling of restlessness and constant urge to be
moving. It is from kithisia , ultimately from Greek cathedra
which means seat. The interactive box and its pieces are
designed to keep your hands all the time thus hindering the
habit the person suffers from.

Americansinger,songwriter, record producer, and
actress. She made her recording debut in 1990 under the
guidance of Columbia Records executive Tommy Mottola, and
released her self-titled debut studio album,Mariah Carey. The album

VOICE AND TIMBREMariah Carey possesses a five-octave vocal range, and
has the ability to reach notes beyond the 7th octave. She
was ranked first in a 2003 MTV and Blender magazine
countdown of the 22 Greatest Voices in Music, as voted by
fans and readers in an online poll.
HONORS&
AWARDS
Carey has spent a record 79 weeks at the number-one
position on Billboard Hot 100, becoming the artist with the
most weeks at number-one in US chart history. On that
same chart, she has accumulated 18 number-one singles,
which ties her with Elvis Presley for the second most
number-one singles in the chart’s history (after only The
Beatles).
Her hit single “One Sweet Day”, which fea-
tured Boyz II Men, spent sixteen consecutive weeks at the
top of Billboard’s Hot 100 chart in 1996, setting the record
for the most weeks atop the Hot 100 chart in history. After
Carey’s success in Asia with Merry Christmas, Billboard
estimated Carey as the all-time best-selling international
artist in Japan. In 2009, Carey’s cover of Foreigner’s song
“I Want to Know What Love Is” became the
longest-running number-one song in Brazilian singles
chart history, spending 27 consecutive weeks at number-
one, Additionally, Carey has had three songs debut at
number-one on the Billboard Hot 100:“Fantasy”, “One
Sweet Day” and “Honey”, making her the artist with the
most number-one debuts in the chart’s 52-year history.
[317] Also, she is the first female artist to debut at number
1 in the U.S. with “Fantasy”.[298] In 2010, Carey’s 13th
album and second Christmas album, Merry Christmas II
You, debuted at No.1 on the R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart,
making it only the second Christmas album to top that
chart.
INFLUENCES
Carey has said that from childhood she has been
influenced by R&B and soul musicians such as Billie
Holiday and Sarah Vaughan. Her music contains strong
influences of gospel music, and she credits The Clark
Sisters, Shirley Caesar and Edwin Hawkins as the most
influential in her early years. When Carey
incorporated hip-hop into her
sound, speculation arose that
she was making an attempt to
take advantage of the genre’s
popularity.

to organizations such as the Fresh Air Fund. She became
associated with the Fund in the early 1990s, and is the

introduces them to career opportunities. The camp
was called Camp Mariah “for her
generous support and dedication
to Fresh Air children”, and she
received a Congressional Hori-

charity work. Carey also donated royalties from
her hits “Hero” and “One Sweet Day” to charities. She is
well-known nationally for her work with the Make-A-Wish
Foundation in granting the wishes of children with life-

Deepika Padukone is the young blood and the spicy
new flavor of Indian cinema. Her glamorous personality
with the looks of a girl next door and an ever charming
smile, Deepika Padukone surely knows how to take up
hearts by storm within no time.
The acting career of Deepika Padukone got a break-
through when she signed her first film Om Shanti Om
under the Red Chilies banner and starred with the king of
Bollywood, Shahrukh Khan. Since then, Deepika Padu-
kone has created a name and space for herself in Bolly-
wood and she is rising smoothly amongst the new genera-
tion of superstars in Bollywood.
The image of Deepika Padukone

own objectives and knows how
to juggle between values,
modernity and family barriers.
This is what Deepika Padukone
has clearly being depicting in
all her roles so far and she has
been remarkable impressive in
whatever she does.
Just like the quick success stories and popularity of
Deepika Padukone, her love life got much attention when
she started dating one of the most loveable and charming
heroes of this era from the Kapoor dynasty, RanbirKapoor.
The affair got a lot of media attention within no time but
as they say, the hype is all gone as quickly as it comes,
after almost a year, the sizzling romance between Deepika
Padukone and RanbirKapoor came to an end due to
personal reasons. Moreover, the appearance of Deepika
Padukone on Koffee with Karan alongwith SonamKapoor
and her remarks on her affair with Ranbir Kapoor created
a sizzling grapevine in the private circle of Bollywood.
Apart from being the eyecandy of the current Bollywood
cinema scene, Deepika Padukone is an active philanthro-
pist. She has adopted a village in India in Maharashtra and
has joined hands with the village people in order to fight
the electricity crisis in particular.

writing weekly columns in Hindustantimes and also, on an
online social network. Deepika Padukone has appeared on

would be incomplete without
mentioning her nominations, awards
and associations with the leading
designer brands. For her impressive acting skills
in Om Shanti Om, Deepika Padukone managed to grab
the Filmfare for best female debutant alongwith many other
nominations. She has also appeared in the Cannes Film
Festival in 2010. Moreover, Deepika Padukone is and has
remained a popular face for many big brand names like
Sony, Tissot, Kingfisher airlines and Nescafe
A Look into Aamir
Khans ‘Delhi Belly’Aamir Khan’s latst home production movie
‘Delhi Belly’ has created a buzz in Bollywood for
being so bold in its context.
50Interview
Aamir Khan in his upcoming
direction ‘Delhi Belly’has
appeared as an item bomb in it.
However the actor turned
producer clarifies that the item
number ‘I hate you like I love
you’does have significance in
the movie and is not only added
for publicity’s sake?
The item number was not done for the promotion of the
film. It’s there because the director and the writer felt that it
needed to be included. The character of Disco Fighter was
always in the script. Even when the first draft came, it had
Disco Fighter,” Aamir said in an interview.
But the question here arises that
if ‘Disco Fighter’has such
significance in Delhi Belly, then
why doesn’t he have any scene
in the movie? A character called
Arup (Vir Das) in the film, who is
a big fan of Disco Fighter?
There is another character called VJ Suhaya. In the open-
ing scenes of the film she speaks about having a song ‘I
hate you like I love you’ and all that. So by the end of the
film, the song comes that he was talking about. It has a
link with the story of the film. So it was required,” he said.
Aamir Khan says that he agreed
to appear as an ‘item boy’
because his wife Kiran Rao
wanted him to do it?
This idea of, I would say, an item bomb came suddenly to
Abhinay and Akshat (Verma, the script writer) and Kiran
loved it too. When Kiran asked me to do it, I took it up,” he
said.
Amir’s sudden entry in the film
has raised the expectations of
his audience to some level. On
asking him about this he
answered,
We want to excite the audience.Yes, the attention would
shift momentarily, but no film can work on an item song.
I think the film has to work in itself. Until the film is made
well at its level, audiences won’t love it. If audiences won’t
love it, the film can’t be successful.True test would be on
1st July,”
Looks like Aamir’s item song is
in competition with Big B’s item
song ‘Go Meera’in his upcoming
film ‘Bbuddah HogaTerra Baap’
which happens to release at the
same date as Delhi Belly.
I don’t feel any competition. I would definitely not compete
with Amitji because I don’t think I am capable of competing
with him,” said Aamir.
According to Aamir a film would
be successful only if it is made
skillfully because the audience
will ultimately watch it.
“I guess we have such a big audience of 1.4 billion that
two, three, four cinemas releasing at a time is a not an
issue. There is space for all films. Films have to be good
then only they will run,” he said.

Farewell,MyQueen’
Bows in NewYork
Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson are no strangers to the step-
and-repeat.“We’ve done this a few times before,” Jackson grinned at
the Museum of Modern Art in NewYork on Monday night at the
premiere of “Farewell, My Queen.”The actor initially hung off to the
side before mugging with Kruger at the behest of the photo pit.The
low neckline of Jackson’s black T-shirt mirrored that of his date: Kruger
wore an appropriately regal ice-blue, sleeveless, floor-length,
scoop-necked Azzedine Alaïa dress. She didn’t borrow it, she assured
one partygoer, she bought it.
The film, based on a novel by Chantal Thomas, stars Kruger as a
particularly convincing Marie Antoinette in the last days of her reign
with Louis XIV.The familiar story is told through the eyes of the
queen’s most devoted servant, played by Léa Seydoux (who did not
attend the NewYork premiere). Directed by Benoît Jacquot, the film
casts a decidedly sapphic tone over the female relationships of the
court.

  • 8. Sohail Anwer Q.Tell us something about your architecture designs in Xinhua Mall and Mall 1? How are they different from the rest? A. Both Xinhua Mall and Mall 1 are the forums for high- end fashion and entertainment. The main difference be- tween the two is the magnitude. Xinhua Mall is an 18-storey mix-development commercial project with four levels of underground parking. It has five levels of shopping with a beautiful atrium that visually links together all the floors. It has glam- orous and modern interior decorated with some vibrant colours. The interior blends art with hi-technology. Xinhua Mallis a theme mall where the owner has been very selective about the brands to be accommodated within whereas other buildings in the city don’t usually reflect any specific theme.Their fundamental criteria is “first come, first served” irrespective of the nature of business hence no particular theme develops. Mall 1, located at Main Boulevard, Gulberg has three levels of shopping. The main chunk of the mall is occupied by the Pakistan Fash- ion Design Council (PFDC) that became catalyst to bringing to- gether various famous brands and fashion related activities like fashion shows, exhibitions and much more. Saeed Excellence in architecture 8Interview
  • 9. Q.What’s your philosophy be- hind the designs that you create for the malls? A.I wanted to create a building that not only fulfils the shopping needs but at the same time visiting the building should also be a joyful experience. Linear showrooms at the front quickly grasps the attention of the visitor and the shopping experience starts there and then. I wanted to make my projects a hub, so people should not leave the premises and explore the options under one roof. Since all the brands are brought together as one, people quickly find their desired item after a bit of search. Q. How far you see your design infrastructure progressing in future? A. Both Xinhua Mall and Mall 1 have very rapidly become fashion hubs for the city and these are the trendsetters for future buildings, particularly in Gulberg. This phenomenon has occurred due to the fast growing fashion industry, which is in demand of spaces and places to accommodate their products and activities for instance fashion shows, fashion previews, exhibitions, etc. Q. How have you amalgamated fashion and entertainment together at Mall 1? A.Mall 1 is the extension of the same concept as far as the space layout of the front showrooms are concerned. The building was fortunate enough to attract PFDC that became another hub of fashion activity, which attracted the fashion lovers in town, not only through its exhibits but also through its sleek and modern architectural design. Q.Tell us something about your design philosophy in context with fashion at Xinhua Mall? A.Xinhua Mall project right from conceiving to its becoming a reality has been a very exciting experience for me.The concept behind was to create a shopping hub that would not only be a profitable financial venture for the developer and the shop owners but also a spot where shopping should be an entertaining experience which would be done by creating an exciting ambiance and finally carefully selecting the most demanded brands. For that I must give credit to Nadim Malik for giving me a free hand in designing construction budget and Nadim Qadir for sharing his inspiring ideas that made this project an ultimate destination for fashion lovers. Q.Were these fashion infrastructures seen before in Pakistan or are you the pioneer of bringing this architecture in the country? A. This kind of phenomenon has never been witnessed in the country before. There have been some malls in the past but did not run successful due to an indifference towards many ground realities and the needs of the end users. Perhaps it was the right time for the right project with the right client where I was at liberty to experiment my concepts that I developed over a long period of time with experience. Q.What’s next in your projects? A.Now this new concept has stimulated many clients who are ready to harvest the benefits of this successful concept without any risk. Mall-94 adjacent to Mall 1 is my new upcoming project, which will be very compact but at the same time an advanced version of its predecessors.Value Heights in DHA, Lahore is also another very ambitious and futuristic project designed by myself, which would be in the market shortly. It would be the largest in the city comprising of about 700,000 square feet on three acres of land. I foresee a very flourishing market of this category of buildings in coming times.

  • 12. Pakistani student is Britain’s latest singing sensation “A new singing sensation has risen on the hori- zon, instantly causing a stir on the Internet with a song that is set to determine a new career path for the humble singer” Shahid Nazir Ahmad, who came as a student to London a year ago, is not an established singer and never dreamed of becoming one. He never imagined that he will one day count former pop sensation Alesha Dixon as a fan as well as more than three million members of the public who have watched his sensational song ‘One Pound Fish Man’ onYouTube, propelling the hardworking student into the mainstream music scene. Working in minorities-dominated East Ham’s fish mar- ket, the Lahori student made his song to attract potential customers to the discount-rate fish. It is clear that Ahmad took his inspiration for the song from street-hawkers and stall-sellers occupying the busy streets of inner Lahore and other urban shopping areas. The standout version has to be the one done by singer turned TV superstar Alesha Dixon, now a judge on the popular X Factor. Alesha Dixon has done a cover version of the song on the BBC 1Xtra Breakfast Show. But that’s a small thing as compared to what else the budding singer has achieved. After clearing three rounds of auditions, the singer has already recorded his song for the X Factor, likely to be shown in the second week of August. A pirate video of Shahid’s X Factor audition is out, showing the house warming up to his lyrics. Gushes the student:“X Factor is the world’s largest music stage at the moment with millions tuning in every week. I cannot believe how lucky I have been to be part of this show.” The part-time worker found a job at the fish market three months ago.“On the first day I just did a little bit of shouting to attract customers, shouting ‘one pound fish’, and then on the second and third day I made up this ‘One Pound Fish’ song myself, not really expecting anything. When I started singing everyone liked it. Originally from Pattoki (‘the city of flowers’), a small town near Lahore, the hard working boy is getting his moment 12Features
  • 13. of glory - and he loves it. His song has become such a hit on the Internet that he now has little time to sell fish on Queens Market on Green Street as he is mobbed for photographs and impromptu performances of his song all the time. His boss is happy to keep him on though, for his new-found status as a celebrity, and for the same helping with sale of the price-cut fish! Shahid speaks in broken English but he is able to convey his meaning and has increasingly become more confident. He believes that God put the idea of the song in his mind, it couldn’t have happened otherwise.“Singing has been my hobby since childhood and I regularly sang Naats/ Nasheeds while growing up. I also enjoyed singing popular Urdu and Punjabi songs. It wasn’t until I made up ‘One Pound Fish’ and started singing it that my voice was ap- preciated. I am proud and happy so many people love my song.” Shahid was surprised when he was told by a friend that people were uploading his song onYouTube and that it had gone viral.“I only found out about what was happening on the Internet when the views of the first uploaded video hit 40,000. I was surprised and happy when I saw it, but never thought that it would become so popular” As the video gained more views, Shahid’s fans started descending upon his fish stall.“First, people from all over London started coming just to meet me, then they started coming from around the country. They wanted me to sign autographs and take photographs with them. Then different people started bringing their friends down to meet me.” Shahid hopes that at some point he gets an opportunity to do a duet with Alesha Dixon and reckons it would be a special collaboration.“I want to send this message espe- cially to Alesha Dixon: I am a big fan, loved your version of the song and I humbly request that we sing it together. She is a very big name and I think she has a very big heart, so won’t turn down my request.” The unassuming fish salesman is enjoying meeting the countless people who come to his fish stall. He is making a lot of new friends and putting a smile on the faces of a rapidly growing fan base.“Lots of people come to meet me. Interestingly enough there are more non-Asians who have become fans. I remember one man came down from Leeds with his entire family, took photographs, an autograph and even offered me a job. I can’t leave London now,” he says in Punjabi. The easygoing singer laughs that women are showing a lot of interest in him and he has received many marriage proposals. At a recent Asian mela, attended by thousands of British Asians, Shahid had girls going crazy for him. “Recently, a man came to me and gave me a photo of a pretty girl and said she wants to marry you. I am getting lots of marriage proposals, but I am not interested. I see it as a blessing that such a simple English language song has made so many people happy.” Shahid also dreams of one day collaborating with Paki- stani music stars.“There are so many great singers I admire and would love to work with. I like Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. I did a radio interview and sang ‘Main Tenu Samjhawan’, and got a good response. I also sang a song of Abrar-ul-Haq on the radio. I wouldn’t mind working with both these great artists.” “I like singing all languages, but Urdu and Punjabi are my mother tongues. English is a new language for me and I am just learning. I can’t do cover versions of Eng- lish songs, so it is better for me to create new songs in English.”Shahid’s song alone would not have taken him anywhere if he were not a charming performer too.“I did a lot of acting in school and even won a certificate for being the best actor/performer at school. So I feel music and act- ing are things I can do really well.” What are his future plans, then? “I believe today my suc- cess is a direct result of my mother’s prayers, she has always prayed for me. I have been down, but my mother’s prayers have carried me through difficulties and bought me here today. The blessings of God, my mother and father have given me the energy to carry on and will continue to guide me.”

Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design Pakistan Institute of Fashion and Design (PIFD) is a very unique institute, which has visibly revolutionized fashion and design education in Pakistan. 2012 is a year of great significance for PIFD. For the first time it displayed the work of graduation students of three new departments apart from Fashion Design and Fashion Marketing and Merchandising, namely Jewellery Design and Gemological Sciences, FurnitureDesignand ManufacturingandTextileDesign.Itholds greathopesandaspirationsespeciallyfor graduatingstudentsfromthesenew departments. This year, forty seven students of Fashion Design, made a collection of four garments each. They dedicated their final semester to develop and execute their creations. A spe- cial feature is that all students designed and tailored the garments themselves. The amount of effort put in by every student was evident in the final presentation. As for other detais,it is pertinent to share that the graduating batch of Fashion Marketing and Merchandising comprised of seventeen students. They havel presented the final year project to the jury comprising of French consultants, eminent fashion industry leaders and senior faculty members. Their projects are diverse in nature and not only capture the essence of academic program but also realities of the corporate world. It covers all the aspects of fashion marketing from design, costing, market survey and promo- tions. The department of Jewelry Design and Gemological Sci- ences showcased the work of twenty five students. The pioneering graduating batch from this department made a collection of five pieces each. Four are jewellery pieces whereas the fifth one is an experimental, non wearable article. The students were given a semester to develop and execute a collection which was hand manufactured from the initial stage to the last. Each piece is a labor of love with hours of hard work and conscientious detailing put into finishing the pieces. And that is why three out of them adorn the pages of this magazine. As for others, some of the toppers will appear in the next issue of this online publication. Movable jewelryAnka Naeem My theme for the thesis project is movable jewelry. The basic inspiration has been taken from the simple moving objects like movable toys, and such playful things in which the movement of few elements create such an eye movement that it makes the viewer enjoy the sight. My pieces have mechanisms involved, on the basis of which, the decorative elements are going to move up and down, swing and rotate. All the pieces will have a silver or gold finishing with the rings actually made from silver and bangles out of copper. Movable jewelry is new to be found in Pakistan, as it will have its focus on the movement of the elements rather than the beauty, which is the top priority of our local market. My collection targets people who are fond of unique and artistic pieces and are trend setters. My concept behind making movable jewelry is to provide the wearer with not only a decorative, but also a playful, eye catching jewelry piece.

Sail away from the safe harbour. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.”-- MarkTwain My father read this quotation about twenty five years ago and as a result, I grew up travelling around Pakistan, exploring and being mesmerized by our culture. As a child, my greatest fear was overtaking or travelling behind a truck - those brides on move while travelling on slopes, which eventually developed my as- sociation with the art form they carry. A bejewelled traditional Pakistani truck is not just a vehicle. It is an unfolding grandeur, an emblem of a driver’s dream of an elaborately adorned Pakistani bride.“Brides on Move” is an amalgamation of vibrant Pakistani culture (of truck art) with innovation in design so as to make jewellery that would keep up with the pace of modern day life and address the issues of present consumer.

  • 40. Literature and images for jewellery a tool for dealing with nervous habits The topic of my collection is jewelery a tool was dealing with nervous habits. The pieces have a dual function firstly like all other jewelery pieces they can be worn as an adornment and secondly they are functional pieces, each can help you deal with a nervous habit you suffer from. Taking inspiration from psychological theories and therapies, building it up with technical knowledge, my collection provides five different concepts to deal with five different nervous habits namely nail biting, knuckle cracking, scratching, pen clicking and lastly twisting. The pieces are just not a combination of three basic shapes namely circle, square and triangle but objects that closely connect with human body providing an interactive and motivating on the spot preventive measure for unconscious nervous habits. The pieces have changeable tops studded with rubies in order to provide the wearer with an option for formal and informal wearing. The pieces are named according to the habit they are designed. Onychophagia nail biting The practice of biting one’s nails especially when done habitu- ally.Onyx means nail and phagia means eating. Trichotillo for scratching Repeated urge to pull or twist hair until it breaks off Trichotill means to pull out Crepitus for knuckle cracking Medical term to explain cracking or popping sound under skin From Latin word crepare to crack, creak. Dexedrine for clicking Dextroamphetamine is a medicine that helps to increase the ability to pay attention, concentrate, stay focused, and stop fidgeting. Akathisia to keep hands busy It is a movement disorder and feeling of restlessness. Constant urge to be moving kithisia , ultimately from Greek cathedra which means seat. The name of this piece isTrichotillo and is used for scratching. Trichotillomania is a hair-pulling disorder, repeated urge to pull or twist hair until it breaks off.Trichotill means to pull out.The ring is design to hinder the habit of scratching. It is inspired by aversion therapy in which a nagative stimulus is associated with the habit.Wearing this ring if you continously scratch the spring utilizes energy and after a while the joint will start hurting and hindering the action. The ring has a changeable screw and the spring inside can also be changed with hard or soft to control the stimulus. Sara Khan
  • 41. This piece is named onychophagia. It is the practice of biting nails especially when done habitually.Onyx means nail and phagia means eating. This piece is designed to hinder the habit of nail biting. It is inspired from psychological therapy named diversion in which the mind of the client is diverted to another idea. Here the Movement and interactive relation- ship with the body has been the most important element exploring the mechanical structure which becomes the most enjoyable form as a motivator to divert the person from biting nails. The mechanism was de- vised by studying the pieces of DuknooYoon (2002) and with experimentation. There are two nails one with stones and other is plain. For the piece hand anatomy and joint movement was studies to allow maximum movement, making it comfortable to use. This piece is designed for the habit of clicking which according to observation was seen in class situation and time when you are concentrating and your hand are free.It is named Dex- edrine which is from Dextroamphetamine which is a medicine that helps to increase the ability to pay attention, concentrate, stay focused, and stop fidgeting. It is self invented mechanism after studying various clicking mechanism, inspired from the concept of sublimation (Freud), according to which socially unacceptable impulses or idealizations are consciously trans- formed into socially acceptable actions or behavior. The click- ing habit is replaced in a ring which has a much low sound thus less distracting and replicated the original habit of clicking This ring is designed for knuckle cracking and its named Crepitus. This word is a medical term used to explain cracking or popping sound under skin.It is from Latin word crepare to crack, creak. This is a self though and designed mechanism inspired from aversion therapy (negative stimulus) In which when you crack your knuckle and the fingers come on the ring, the spring gets pressed and pinches, resulting in the person getting diverted. It has a changeable screw for wear variation.Nervous habits as seen in the research part are most common in leisure time like watching television. Thus this table piece is named Akathisia.Akathisia is a movement disorder and feeling of restlessness and constant urge to be moving. It is from kithisia , ultimately from Greek cathedra which means seat. The interactive box and its pieces are designed to keep your hands all the time thus hindering the habit the person suffers from.

  • 50. A Look into Aamir Khans ‘Delhi Belly’Aamir Khan’s latst home production movie ‘Delhi Belly’ has created a buzz in Bollywood for being so bold in its context. 50Interview
  • 51. Aamir Khan in his upcoming direction ‘Delhi Belly’has appeared as an item bomb in it. However the actor turned producer clarifies that the item number ‘I hate you like I love you’does have significance in the movie and is not only added for publicity’s sake? The item number was not done for the promotion of the film. It’s there because the director and the writer felt that it needed to be included. The character of Disco Fighter was always in the script. Even when the first draft came, it had Disco Fighter,” Aamir said in an interview. But the question here arises that if ‘Disco Fighter’has such significance in Delhi Belly, then why doesn’t he have any scene in the movie? A character called Arup (Vir Das) in the film, who is a big fan of Disco Fighter? There is another character called VJ Suhaya. In the open- ing scenes of the film she speaks about having a song ‘I hate you like I love you’ and all that. So by the end of the film, the song comes that he was talking about. It has a link with the story of the film. So it was required,” he said. Aamir Khan says that he agreed to appear as an ‘item boy’ because his wife Kiran Rao wanted him to do it? This idea of, I would say, an item bomb came suddenly to Abhinay and Akshat (Verma, the script writer) and Kiran loved it too. When Kiran asked me to do it, I took it up,” he said. Amir’s sudden entry in the film has raised the expectations of his audience to some level. On asking him about this he answered, We want to excite the audience.Yes, the attention would shift momentarily, but no film can work on an item song. I think the film has to work in itself. Until the film is made well at its level, audiences won’t love it. If audiences won’t love it, the film can’t be successful.True test would be on 1st July,” Looks like Aamir’s item song is in competition with Big B’s item song ‘Go Meera’in his upcoming film ‘Bbuddah HogaTerra Baap’ which happens to release at the same date as Delhi Belly. I don’t feel any competition. I would definitely not compete with Amitji because I don’t think I am capable of competing with him,” said Aamir. According to Aamir a film would be successful only if it is made skillfully because the audience will ultimately watch it. “I guess we have such a big audience of 1.4 billion that two, three, four cinemas releasing at a time is a not an issue. There is space for all films. Films have to be good then only they will run,” he said.

Farewell,MyQueen’ Bows in NewYork Diane Kruger and Joshua Jackson are no strangers to the step- and-repeat.“We’ve done this a few times before,” Jackson grinned at the Museum of Modern Art in NewYork on Monday night at the premiere of “Farewell, My Queen.”The actor initially hung off to the side before mugging with Kruger at the behest of the photo pit.The low neckline of Jackson’s black T-shirt mirrored that of his date: Kruger wore an appropriately regal ice-blue, sleeveless, floor-length, scoop-necked Azzedine Alaïa dress. She didn’t borrow it, she assured one partygoer, she bought it. The film, based on a novel by Chantal Thomas, stars Kruger as a particularly convincing Marie Antoinette in the last days of her reign with Louis XIV.The familiar story is told through the eyes of the queen’s most devoted servant, played by Léa Seydoux (who did not attend the NewYork premiere). Directed by Benoît Jacquot, the film casts a decidedly sapphic tone over the female relationships of the court. 54P&PE
