2022-09 #7 FARO CONVENTION NETWORK
FARO CREATING COOPERATION
Novi Sad meets Castellón, Spain. //Source: City Of Novi Sad photographer Source: Facebook post
Violeta Đerković updates about the work Svilara
Cultural Station in the Almaš neighbourhood, which was
the Novi Sad factory for silk dyeing worked up until the
70s. Today, Svilara as a cultural station is renewing the
neighbourhood. During the event, organised by Novi
Sad Capital of Culture in September, a panel discussed
how to preserve the Almaški kraj for future generations.
Two ideas emerged: (1) to implement an urban-
architectural plan, which will be implemented on the
basis of the Joint Investment Agreement of APV and the
City of Novi Sad. Such an urban plan process helps to
create the conditions for the revival. (2) Through the
participation in the Faro Network, an idea emerged of a
platform for cooperation with the Jaume I University.

FARO AND OPERA
Photo: Performers during the Cabbage Field Opera (D.Petrulis 2022)
Can opera help to refresh a living cultural heritage? Well
from the experience of the "Cabbage Field" community
opera the answer is positive. A troupe of thirty-eight
community members spent a week in rehearsal and
performed twice as part of the European Capital of Culture
Esch 2022 in Differdange, Luxembourg. This process of
opera done through a community art process started in
2018. The title of the opera comes from a public site,
reclaimed by the community. It has cabbage cellars which
formed part of the 19th century army barracks. The
members of the opera troupe, professional and
nonprofessional artists, share a sense of belonging to the
neighbourhood. All events and characters are inspired by
the people and stories of Šančiai. The music was
composed by Vidmantas Bartulis, who passed away
before the last part of the opera was finished. WATCH

FARO CONVENTION: DEFINING HERITAGE
TOGETHER
Maël Lucas reminds us about the next Faro Convention
Action Research Days: a live event in Bordeaux on 27
and 28 September 2022. With the Faro Convention,
people's narratives, our memories and joys, our stories
and our sorrows, become a heritage issue for democracy
and human rights.
What new relationships should we invent between
people, communities, and historians, and
conservatives, museums, and heritage experts?
How to reconcile people living with dissent and
conflicting narratives?
We'll be talking about it all with scientists, committed
associations, conservatives, artists... who throughout
Europe, have committed to the Faro Way and experiment
to foster relationships of humanity and recognition.
Come and join us at the plenary of these European
research days! AND don't forget to register here, it's open
to all! REGISTER

FARO SECRETARIAT UPDATES
Jovana Poznan updates about various events:
Almasani Association, a member of the Faro
Convention Network is organising on 21 September, in
Novi Sad, Serbia, an international conference entitled
“Cultural Heritage: Participatory Approach”. The Faro
Secretariat will take part in the conference, together with
the local and regional authorities and representatives of
different heritage communities and initiatives from
Serbia. It will be a momentum to further disseminated the
principles of the Faro Convention and launch the
creation of the Serbian national Faro Convention
Network.
The Council of Europe, together with the Finnish
Heritage Agency and Estonian Ministry of Culture, is
organising a Faro regional seminar on 17 and 18
October, in Tallinn, Estonia. It will focus on the
experience of the Baltic states in the implementation of
the Faro Convention and will aim to showcase some
good practices in this respect, as well as offer guidance
and tools to assist the region.
Following the recent ratification of the Faro Convention
by Spain, the Spanish Ministry of Culture and Sports
is organising a meeting with the regional authorities in
Spain, on 22 November, in Siguenza, with the aim of
setting an Action plan for the implementation phase of

A new publication "The Faro Convention at work in
Europe: selected examples" will soon be available in
both digital and paper format. The publication was made
in the framework of the Joint project of the Council of
Europe and the European Union "The Faro Way:
enhanced participation in cultural heritage".
Ángel Portolés
recalls one of his
summer activities -
a two-day meeting
entitled, Citizenship
deciding their
common future
connecting People
and Heritages.
What is special
about these events
in rural areas is the
way it acts to
motivate community
members from rural
villages to share
their ideas and take responsibilities as heritage
communities. This happens when you make points of
exchange and find ways for different stakeholders to
learn together. Opening up heritage processes to
communities has so much potential and communicates
how heritage promotes a new sense of belonging and
tolerance.

NEW EUROPEAN BAUHAUS
Regaining a sense of belonging was also the Bauhaus
strand that saw two prize winners in June 2023:
GLEIS 21 VIENNA, AUSTRIA
Gleis 21 is in Vienna’s new Sonnwendviertel
neighbourhood, connecting the tenth district and the
inner-city area. The building today is visible from afar, its
wooden facade contrasting with most urban architecture.
The wood-based hybrid construction was built using an
innovative assembly method based on prefabrication.
Future residents have been involved throughout the entire
process. They now collectively own, operate and manage
this co-housing-project that emphasizes affordability,
inclusion, community and solidarity. Award: €30,000.

an example of the type of day-to-day work that PAX does
as a facilitator of a heritage community and active
member of Faro network.
PAX was announced as a winner of European Heritage
Awards-Europa Nostra Awards 2022 in the category
Citizen Participation and Awareness, in which projects
and actions that promote patrimonialization processes
stand out, as well as the inclusion of citizens as a leading
actor in the recognition of these values.
What makes PAX innovative is its governance initiative
that is promoted by a group of people from the field of
architecture and anthropology, and seeks to join efforts
of different stakeholders to implement processes that
allow the heritage rescue of the Mediterranean city.
