Technologies in the
Harris Centre,
Walford Campus

3. The Walford campus has a long tradition of
delivering education to land-based industries
land-
and this has always included an element of
“green” practices such as composting and
conservation, and in 1993 the installation of an
Anaerobic Digester on the college farm.
The opportunity of a new build here allowed us
to put renewable technologies and intelligent
design at the heart of what we do.

4. Renewable energy technologies included in the
Harris Centre design are
Wind turbine
Ground source heat pump
Photo voltaic cells
Wood Chip boiler
But the building is successful because of good
design and its high level of specification

5. Wind Turbine
Capital cost of £26,540, current annual output
302KWh.
The turbine is a Proven 2.5 on a 6.5 m pole
and was predicted to generate 2,500 kWh per
year
Current issues include the turbines location
and height

6. Ground Source heat pump
Two Terra heat pumps that can each generate a heat
output of 34 kW from a required electric input of 6.3kW
There are deep bore holes (110m) and a “slinky”
system of pipes in a neighbouring field, the returning
liquid is a relatively constant temperature of about 15oC
This heat is then processed in a similar way to a
refrigerator works (in reverse) and warms the heating
system water to about 49oC
This heat is then is distributed around the Harris
centre via under floor heating.

7. Photovoltaic cells
Capital cost of the photovoltaic cells was
£38,782. Current annual output is 2884kWh.
There are 30sqm of cells predicted to produce
3200kWh

8. Woodchip Boiler
The Talbott’s Biomass wood chip boiler was
installed as a backup system for when additional
heat maybe required.
The boiler has only been lit twice !
