RFID and barcodes are technologies used to track inventory in Pakistan. RFID uses small electronic devices with antennas and memory chips to identify objects without needing direct line of sight like barcodes. Major companies in Pakistan using RFID include PIA to track cargo and Unilever/P&G to manage warehouse inventory. Barcodes require individual scanning but are used by supermarkets like Imtiaz to track sales. RFID is concluding to be more useful for businesses in Pakistan due to allowing bulk scanning of multiple items rather than individual barcodes.

What is RFID?
RFID stands for Radio-Frequency Identification. Small electronic devices that consist of a
small chip and an antenna. The chip typically is capable of carrying 2,000 bytes of data or less. A
significant advantage of RFID devices over the others is that the RFID device does not need to be
positioned precisely relative to the scanner. For example, you could just put all of your groceries
or purchases in a bag, and set the bag on the scanner. It would be able to query all of the RFID
devices and total your purchase immediately. It has only been recently that the ability to
manufacture the RFID devices has fallen to the point where they can be used as a "throwaway"
inventory or control device.
Implications of RFID in Pakistan:
There are many companies in Pakistan are using RFID to track their Inventory, goods,
supplies and many other things. The core companies that are engage in using RFID are discussed
below;
RFID in PIA. PIA use RFID to track the cargo that needs to be transported all across the
globe from or to Pakistan. RFID allows PIA to identify the objects to be transported at once.
Although, it helps its supplier and PIA itself to track where their aircraft is. It makes them easy to
determine the exact location as well as the model of aircraft and the origin of that aircraft.
3. What is RFID and Barcode and What it’s implication in Pakistan? 3
Use of RFID in Unilever and P$G warehouse. While, the use in different ware house is
very simple, as we can see, that there is a loads of bulk stored in their ware house, which needs to
be supplied to the wholesalers and retailers.
Furthermore, these companies also uses RFID to identify their products such as, GSK,
Pfizer, Engro foods and Lucky cement.
What is Barcode?
A barcode scanner reads this pattern of black and white that is then turned into a line of
text your computer can understand. You need to separately scan each product to identify the
product. Barcode can be read by the help of scanner which helps a person to easily identify the
object and equipment has sold. But one needs to separately scan the barcode of every product
separately, which makes it hectic thing to do.
Implications of Barcode in Pakistan:
There are many marts and superstores in Pakistan are using barcode to track their per day
sales. The core companies that can be seen using barcodes are discussed below;
Barcode in Imtiaz Super Mart. In Imtiaz super mart, we must have seen people paying
money after paying getting the barcodes on their products scanned. In Pakistan, different
superstores are using barcode scanners Including Metro, Naheed super mart and Makro.

It is used, to identify the object separately on the time of sale, it helps the responder (who
is scanning the products) to have a statement of the outflows and inflows by the help of barcode
scan.
Conclusion
The RFID found to be the most useful in Pakistan, because, the business are empowering
their supply chain to adopt RFID chips instead of Barcodes, because, barcodes are way too hectic
to read.
As you need to scan every product separately, while through RFID, it is very easy to have
all the objects identification at one place.
Through, RFID, it becomes efficient to track every item very easily just by retrieving data
from the server. With RFID tags on products, inventory management becomes much simplified as
it is easier to track which products need to be restocked or running out of production.
