1. WHAT IS SELF-CONFIDENCE?
Generally speaking, self-confidence or rather confidence, is difficult to define, yet, it might
be rather easier to spot! When someone portray self-confidence traits, you intuitively think
‘this person is so confident’; it comes like a feeling. So, what exactly is self-confidence?
Oxford Languages Dictionary define self confidence as that feeling of trust in one’s
abilities, qualities, and judgment.
I tend to fully agree with this definition since it refers to that sense of comfort with yourself
and your instincts and a complete belief that you can trust your own abilities, knowledge,
and judgment. It is the kind of feeling you have when your favorite football team is playing
against a weaker opponent and you are so sure that victory is imminent such that you can bet
your life on it!

the one associated with the belief that if enough effort is exerted then results attainment is
definite.

2. WHAT ARE THE TRAITS OF A SELF-CONFIDENT PERSON?
Now that we know what self confidence is, and we know it is a particular behavior, it is high
time to dwell into the behavioral traits of a self-confident person compared to those of a
lesser confidence level. The table below provides the illustration:-

seek advice from peers due to inferiority
complex issues.
Optimistic, believing in their ability to
tackle a seemingly difficult task at the
beginning.
Pessimistic, full of self-doubt. Not believing in
themselves a midst a challenging situation.

3. WHY DOES SELF-CONFIDENCE MATTER?
So, why so much hype about self-confidence? Does it real matter? The fact is, this is one of
the pillars in the area of self development. This is so, solely due to its importance. It is vital
in almost every aspects of our lives to be confident; without which it is unlikely to achieve
the success that could further boost our confidence; a vicious cycle! It has so much influence
on our professional as well as personal lives such that it is detrimental to be ignored. Here
are some reasons as to why self-confidence is crucial:-
i. DECISION MAKING
Decision making is a skill, also an art, normally involving choosing the best option among
the existing ones. Under normal circumstances the options available will vary from highly
risky (with higher stakes) to lowly risky (with lower stakes). Confident people, with
researched information in hand, will normally go for unpopular choice which will wow their
colleagues latter when the outcome is revealed. While the majority might be thinking the
situation is in their favor so they should go all in; a confident might see the situation
otherwise and will explain to colleagues and ask them for their trust; and will take the
unpopular route, which, many times will prove as the right course of action. However, when
their choice leads to failure, they don’t take it personal but take the necessary learning from
the incident ready for use in their future endeavors.
ii. HEALTH ISSUES
On one hand, people who are self-confident have an optimistic belief in their personal
worth; on the other, it is a well known fact that optimism protects the mind against
depression and reduces stress, which are highly associated with health problems such as
high blood pressure, heart disease, obesity and diabetes.
iii. CULTIVATES GREATER RESILIENT APPROACH
Self-Confidence doesn’t keep you immune from making mistakes even failing! The two are
part of life and are bundled together with it. However, if you are self-confident, neither
mistakes nor failures will make you worry too much but rather, in your mind and perception,
will be the likes of a stepping stone leading you to higher achievements. Self-Confidence
makes you regard negativities in life as learning opportunities to take you even to higher
heights thus strive even harder while facing challenging situations.
iv. IMPROVES RELATIONSHIPS
Self-Confidence is contagious as it can be felt by people around you, consequently making
them also feel confident and comfortable when they are with you. Since confident people
are comfortable being themselves, this alone encourages honesty and trust in a relationship.
While self-confidence is a catalyst for loving others, it also make you love yourself. This
may lead you to abandon any toxic or unhealthy behavior and relationships. Because they
don’t depend on others opinion for their sense of worth, they are less likely to cave to people
who don’t respect them.

Due to their daring nature, people with higher self confidence have better chances of
climbing higher the carrier success ladder. It is agreed that we all learn through mistakes; if
mistakes motivates you to even try harder then in the long run you will accumulate a wealth
of knowledge and experiences enough to make you a good leader or practitioner in your
carrier line.

Self-Confident people give off the impression that they know what they are doing and are in
control. Such people are seen as trustworthy, inspirational and reliable as a result they get
respected in the society they are living.

Self-Confident people are very direct when talking; they don’t hide behind the bush and
have no self-doubt once they reach a consensus with their decisions. This, in most cases,
makes them good communicators. The opposite is true for less confident people. Since they
struggle with internal doubts, not sure of themselves and seek others approval; consequently
they often struggle to express themselves especially when faced with sensitive matters; thus
becoming bad communicators.
viii. IGNITES INTERNAL MOTIVATION
By nature, when somebody is self confident then their level of daring is very high. It
becomes very important for them to succeed in every situation they are faced with. This

4. HOW TO BUILD SELF-CONFIDENCE
As said earlier, while self confidence is easier to spot, it is rather difficult to develop!
This is so because it is a behavioral trait embedded into one’s character buildup from
childhood influenced by the type of family one was born into, the surrounding societies one
lived within, the totality of influences and experiences one encountered in life, and so forth.
That said, however, it is still possible for one to buildup or raise their self confidence
level at latter stages of their lives. It is done by imitating and influencing similar chain of
events that would buildup self-confidence from childhood; only this time it requires much
more effort and deep willingness to undergo through the process grasping the pain and
making the necessary sacrifices to achieve the goal. It requires setting up a system around us
that influences the chain of events in our lives to work in our favor towards achieving our
goal. Let me clarify by providing some tips on how to raise confidence level:-
i. BELIEVE IN YOURSELF
Believe in yourself and trust that you are meant for bigger things. Completely avoid self
doubting. Tell yourself that you can achieve anything as long as you put your mind to it and
exert enough effort towards its accomplishment.
ii. BECOME SUCCESSFUL IN YOUR CARRIER
Whether you are a garbage collector, a politician, a business person, a farmer, a sports
man/woman etc. as much as your name gains popularity in your field as someone
dependable then it helps boost your confidence level as a person.
If you are super knowledgeable about a subject matter and the people around you regards
you as a guru then automatically you become confident with yourself and you can easily
shrug off when somebody challenging you in other areas and let them know the area of your
expertise and whether you could assist them with any issues in that area. The key here is to
strive to master an area you spend most of your time unto; most likely this will be your
carrier or hobby.
iii. BELIEVE IN OTHERS
A famous phrase originating from the Bible, also known as the ‘Golden Rule’, goes like Do
unto others as you would have them do unto you, meaning treat others the way we want
them to treat us. In my opinion, you can’t believe in yourself if you don’t believe and
appreciate others. Avoid being judgmental or hostile towards other’s success rather learn to
appreciate and celebrate their achievements. Feel genuine happiness for them rather than
comparison or envy. Encourage them to achieve even more raising their bar. Others success
should inspire you to learn whatever positive lessons you can about their success and put
them to action for your own growth, not competition.
iv. MASTER APPROPRIATE BODY LANGUAGES
Self-Confidence comes with many attributes such as the look, the walk, the talk, energy,
enthusiasm just to name a few; and all these are related to body presentation. Thus, it is
critically important to master proper body languages as part of self confidence development
process. I will not dwell much into this area but only provide some tips for powerful and
confident body languages:-
- Lean Forward – Helps showing honest interest and attention towards others.
- Sit/Stand Up Straight – Makes you look capable and self-assured.
- Avoid Fidgeting – That is, keep your hands off your hair or objects.
- Pace your Breathing – Have control of your breath; don’t sound like you just
came from a race!
- Control your Voice and Articulate – Adapt the speed and tone of your voice to the
current situation.
- Lift your Chin Up – Look ahead towards your audience shifting directions
occasionally.
- Make Eye Contact – Makes you appear trustworthy, dependable also bold/firm.
- Engage in Firm Handshake – This empower others and shows that you stand up for
yourself.
- Smile and be Warm – This seemingly small gesture will keep people remembering
you! It is good to be remembered positively.
v. ATTAIN FINANCIAL STABILITY
Financial stability soothes the heart, mind and soul. Here, I don’t mean becoming financially
free or a millionaire! Just becoming financially able such that you are not worried about
being unable to afford your basic needs, may be with a little surplus/savings!
vi. CELEBRATE AND REFLECT ON YOUR ACHIEVEMENTS
Confident people look back at their past accomplishment, regardless of their size, and use
them as fuel for future endeavors. You should develop the habit of reflecting on your
achievements, past and present, raising your hopes for bigger achievements in the future.
vii. SET UP GOALS
Make it a habit to set some SMART goals for things you desire to achieve in your carrier,
social and personal lives. It is said that if you don’t know where you are going, any roawiid
will get you there!
viii. TRACK YOUR PROGRESS
It is only natural that if you have setup your goals then you have to track their attainment.
Since our goals are set using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Attainable, Relevant &
Time bound) framework then it is easier to track progress based on deliverable set such as
quantity, quality, time factor, locations, percentage etc. This process is very crucial since it
will enable you to identify slacks and thus take corrective action on time.
ix. FIND A PASSION
Find a hobby that you are real passionate about. During your spare time or when stressed out
take refuge into your hobby and try to master it as much as possible. This could be anything,
may be a sport, cooking, gardening and so forth. If you are interested in a certain activity,
and it motivates you just to perform it, chances are you will build skills quickly within the
activity and the impact will go even outside the activity as you become more daring.
x. SOCIALIZE
Don’t be a loner! Go out with colleagues, friends and family to cheer up. Find peer groups
that share the same values as you and connect. Attend social activities, formal and informal,
giving your contribution as and when required and as the situation permits. Doing this, you
get rid of loneliness which can affect your confidence. It also helps sharpen memory and
cognitive skills due to information and experiences exchange that happens during such
gatherings. Thus reducing stress and increasing your sense of happiness and well-being.
