Horizons One
For the crazy ones and misfits - the people who believe they can
fundamentally change the world with technology. The time is ripe.
Horizons One
Program Overview
Letter from Founders
We live in an era in which tech and software continue to eat the world. Learning to code has been
and will continue to be one of the most valuable skills of the 21st century. From the largest financial
institutions to remote villages in Africa, even the most arcane parts of society are being disrupted by
technology. Products that required teams of engineers to build and maintain 10 years ago can now
be built by one person with a computer. Now more than ever, Marc Andreessen’s prophecy that
“software is eating the world” is coming to life.
We created Horizons to help students launch successful careers in this new world.
Our 3 month summer and 4 month study abroad programs are on track to create hundreds of
alumni in 2017. We’ve laid a foundation for a community of engineers, designers, product managers,
marketers, and entrepreneurs - the future leaders in technology. With alumni winning global
hackathons, starting companies and landing promising opportunities at companies like Google,
Slack, J.P. Morgan, Squarespace, EA Games and the Stanford Research Institute, we are excited
about the steps ahead.
Today, we use our 3 & 4 month programs to transform our students’ skills and perspectives.
However, we believe there is an opportunity to do much more. Hence we created the Horizons
One. We are rebuilding higher education in technology. We designed this program with a single
goal in mind - to build tomorrow’s leaders in technology. Our singular focus on this goal results in an
experience unlike that which any other academic institution has to offer. Horizons graduates will
leave the program with strong problem-solving abilities, engineering experience at real companies,
broad technical exposure, focused technical expertise, industry perspective beyond their years, and
world-class communication skills.
Furthermore, Horizons One is tuition-free. By lowering the barriers to participation, we will continue
to attract amazing talent from across the world. Prior programming experience is not a prerequisite
for our program - but focus, curiosity, and resolve are.
If you are reading this letter, it’s because we would like to consider you for the inaugural cohort of
our Horizons One. We are thrilled at the prospect of working with you and taking you to the next
level of technological understanding.
It will be an amazing ride and we look forward to welcoming you aboard.
Best,
Abhi, Darwish and Edward

Horizons One
Program Overview
Job Placement & Network
It’s all hands on deck
What kind of companies do you expect students to work at?
We expect students to work across a range of companies including larger technology
companies, high growth startups and smaller, up-and-coming startups. We will try and
help students find opportunities that best fit their skill-sets and career interests.
We expect the majority of students to work in San Francisco and New York in their
second year, however, we do ask students to be open to other cities within the US.
90% of software engineering job openings actually exist outside of San Francisco.
If you have any strong preferences on the city or type of company you want to work
at in year 2, please make sure to discuss this with the Horizons team during your
admissions process.
How does the Horizons Network help?
This will be our pilot launch of Horizons One. We are highly incentivized for you to be
successful in this job search! While we don’t have guaranteed job placement for any
student, we will be actively working with every student to make sure you are placed.
Our team has an extensive network that will aid in the job search process.
We have invested in over 50 companies to date
We have made over 50 investments in companies directly over the last 2 years,
providing direct access to founders of several companies. Many of our students
already work at companies that we have invested in.
Horizons One
Program Overview
Through angel investments, we have also co-invested with some of the world’s best
In each of these investments, we have co-invested with many of most iconic venture
capital firms out there, further expanding our reach. These relationships provide
strong unfair advantages for our students. This network includes investors across the
East and West Coast.
Other co-investors include: Ben Horowitz, Peter Thiel, Justin Kan, Garrett Camp, David Bonderman, Keith Rabois,
Joe Lonsdale, Mark Pincus, David Karp, Gary Vaynerchuk, Mark Cuban, Xavier Niel, Ashton Kutcher, Scott Belsky,
Yuri Milner, John and Patrick Collison, Matt Mullenweg, Kevin Colleran, Troy Carter, David Tisch, Pete Cashmore,
Paul Buchheit, Dennis Crowley, Fabrice Grinda, Tikhon Bernstam (Parse, Scribd), David Marcus (Facebook), Chris
Paik (Thrive Capital), Brian O'Kelley (AppNexus), Alex Chung (Giphy), Steven Alan, David Zwirner, Ricky Van Veen
& Josh Abramson (CollegeHumor, Vimeo), Cory Levy, Jean-Baptiste Rudelle (Criteo)
We are well on track to 200+ Horizons alumni in 2017
With our students landing opportunities across tech hubs, Horizons now has reach
across the entire spectrum of tech companies. Our alumni comprise a very strong
community and eager to help fellow Horizonites. By the time students in our pilot
program enter the job search, we expect the number of companies in our alumni
network to reach 2-3x its current size. Below are some of the larger companies our
students are working / have worked at:

Horizons One
Program Overview
Tuition
We have made promising careers accessible to everyone
Tuition Free
Horizons One is tuition free.
Students are expected to cover their own cost of housing, food and transportation
throughout the program. Horizons will use income from the 2nd year of work to cover
tuition.
We will either collect tuition via an Income Share Agreement or a direct partnership
with the company.
Living Subsidy
Students who need financial assistance with housing / living costs may apply for
need-based aid. We will factor in a family's income and a student’s past financial aid
status in determining an amount for the living subsidy. Living subsidies can range
from $0 - $1500/month.
Students who receive a living subsidy will be use their final specialization term as a
work-study term. Students can work with the Horizons team during their summer
internship as teaching assistants, pursue freelance work we provide, or contribute
their internship income to further help with living costs.
Deposit
Students accepted into the program will be asked to make a deposit ranging from
$800 - $8,000. This deposit will be returned upon completion of the 1st year of the
program. The deposit amount will be determined based on a student’s demonstrated
financial need.
Leaving the program
Students who chose to leave the program in their first year may do so. However, they
will be responsible for a prorated tuition of $40,000. The deposit can count towards
this tuition amount.
International Students
International students should speak with a Horizons Admissions member about tuition
options.
Horizons One
Program Overview
We broadens students’ perspectives and knowledge by bringing in successful entrepreneurs, engineers,
operators and investors as part of our tech speaker series. The learning experience goes beyond simply
coding in the classroom. Students gain valuable insights into the latest industry trends, learn about careers
paths, and hear the stories of successful technologists. Below are just some of our speakers from former
classes! You will have 15+ speakers during your Fall Semester at Horizons!

If switching to computer science was the best decision I made in college, taking
Horizons was probably a close second. To think that three guys could start a company
that absolutely changes how I think about my future -- it's really an incredible thing.

Horizons brings together the world’s most promising future leaders and gives them
the engineering skills, perspective and network they need to accelerate their
success. I love this and everyone in this community. I have no doubt that many of the
next great founders, engineers and world leaders will come out of this program.

Technology, Innovation, Society
Horizons changed my trajectory. I was always passionate about entrepreneurship and
tech, but I wasn’t technical. Horizons helped me cultivate the right skills and mindset to
pursue my dream in tech.
Looking back at my 12 weeks there, I realize that I’ve learned the most I’ve ever had
and probably ever will in such a short period of time. For the first time in my 14 years of
formal education, I wanted to learn.
Steven Lin
NYU Stern 2018
Finance and Information Systems
I chose to apply for Horizons because I realized that, after two years of college, my
classes alone were not doing enough to expose me to the tech industry and get a
broad view of my options after college. 12 straight weeks of hands-on learning allowed
me to gain the knowledge and skills a real software engineer needs, and working
together on a project with a team and a real client gave me valuable work experience
I could add to my resume.

Horizons One

  • 1. Horizons One For the crazy ones and misfits - the people who believe they can fundamentally change the world with technology. The time is ripe.
  • 2. Horizons One Program Overview Letter from Founders We live in an era in which tech and software continue to eat the world. Learning to code has been and will continue to be one of the most valuable skills of the 21st century. From the largest financial institutions to remote villages in Africa, even the most arcane parts of society are being disrupted by technology. Products that required teams of engineers to build and maintain 10 years ago can now be built by one person with a computer. Now more than ever, Marc Andreessen’s prophecy that “software is eating the world” is coming to life. We created Horizons to help students launch successful careers in this new world. Our 3 month summer and 4 month study abroad programs are on track to create hundreds of alumni in 2017. We’ve laid a foundation for a community of engineers, designers, product managers, marketers, and entrepreneurs - the future leaders in technology. With alumni winning global hackathons, starting companies and landing promising opportunities at companies like Google, Slack, J.P. Morgan, Squarespace, EA Games and the Stanford Research Institute, we are excited about the steps ahead. Today, we use our 3 & 4 month programs to transform our students’ skills and perspectives. However, we believe there is an opportunity to do much more. Hence we created the Horizons One. We are rebuilding higher education in technology. We designed this program with a single goal in mind - to build tomorrow’s leaders in technology. Our singular focus on this goal results in an experience unlike that which any other academic institution has to offer. Horizons graduates will leave the program with strong problem-solving abilities, engineering experience at real companies, broad technical exposure, focused technical expertise, industry perspective beyond their years, and world-class communication skills. Furthermore, Horizons One is tuition-free. By lowering the barriers to participation, we will continue to attract amazing talent from across the world. Prior programming experience is not a prerequisite for our program - but focus, curiosity, and resolve are. If you are reading this letter, it’s because we would like to consider you for the inaugural cohort of our Horizons One. We are thrilled at the prospect of working with you and taking you to the next level of technological understanding. It will be an amazing ride and we look forward to welcoming you aboard. Best, Abhi, Darwish and Edward Horizons One - Reimagining technology education

  • 7. Horizons One Program Overview Job Placement & Network It’s all hands on deck What kind of companies do you expect students to work at? We expect students to work across a range of companies including larger technology companies, high growth startups and smaller, up-and-coming startups. We will try and help students find opportunities that best fit their skill-sets and career interests. We expect the majority of students to work in San Francisco and New York in their second year, however, we do ask students to be open to other cities within the US. 90% of software engineering job openings actually exist outside of San Francisco. If you have any strong preferences on the city or type of company you want to work at in year 2, please make sure to discuss this with the Horizons team during your admissions process. How does the Horizons Network help? This will be our pilot launch of Horizons One. We are highly incentivized for you to be successful in this job search! While we don’t have guaranteed job placement for any student, we will be actively working with every student to make sure you are placed. Our team has an extensive network that will aid in the job search process. We have invested in over 50 companies to date We have made over 50 investments in companies directly over the last 2 years, providing direct access to founders of several companies. Many of our students already work at companies that we have invested in.
  • 8. • 9. Horizons One Program Overview Tuition We have made promising careers accessible to everyone Tuition Free Horizons One is tuition free. Students are expected to cover their own cost of housing, food and transportation throughout the program. Horizons will use income from the 2nd year of work to cover tuition. We will either collect tuition via an Income Share Agreement or a direct partnership with the company. Living Subsidy Students who need financial assistance with housing / living costs may apply for need-based aid. We will factor in a family's income and a student’s past financial aid status in determining an amount for the living subsidy. Living subsidies can range from $0 - $1500/month. Students who receive a living subsidy will be use their final specialization term as a work-study term. Students can work with the Horizons team during their summer internship as teaching assistants, pursue freelance work we provide, or contribute their internship income to further help with living costs. Deposit Students accepted into the program will be asked to make a deposit ranging from $800 - $8,000. This deposit will be returned upon completion of the 1st year of the program. The deposit amount will be determined based on a student’s demonstrated financial need. Leaving the program Students who chose to leave the program in their first year may do so. • 11. We don’t just teach students how to build, we fundamentally shift the way they think and what they believe is possible.
  • 12. Horizons One Program Overview Caitlin Rubin University of Pennsylvania 2018 Computer Science If switching to computer science was the best decision I made in college, taking Horizons was probably a close second. To think that three guys could start a company that absolutely changes how I think about my future -- it's really an incredible thing. Sadiki Wiltshire Princeton University 2018 Physics, East Asian Studies Horizons brings together the world’s most promising future leaders and gives them the engineering skills, perspective and network they need to accelerate their success. I love this and everyone in this community. I have no doubt that many of the next great founders, engineers and world leaders will come out of this program. • 13. Horizons One Program Overview Mojia Shen Wellesley 2018 Technology, Innovation, Society Horizons changed my trajectory. I was always passionate about entrepreneurship and tech, but I wasn’t technical. Horizons helped me cultivate the right skills and mindset to pursue my dream in tech. Looking back at my 12 weeks there, I realize that I’ve learned the most I’ve ever had and probably ever will in such a short period of time. For the first time in my 14 years of formal education, I wanted to learn. Steven Lin NYU Stern 2018 Finance and Information Systems I chose to apply for Horizons because I realized that, after two years of college, my classes alone were not doing enough to expose me to the tech industry and get a broad view of my options after college. 12 straight weeks of hands-on learning allowed me to gain the knowledge and skills a real software engineer needs, and working together on a project with a team and a real client gave me valuable work experience I could add to my resume.
