2. FAO Tools to Support NAMA MRV in Agriculture
FAO provides supports to Member countries on baseline determination
and MRV of NAMAs in agriculture, forestry and other land use (AFOLU)
sector.

To support its member countries FAO
developed a NAMA tool for agriculture,
forestry and other land use which helps
agriculture sector stakeholders get started
with NAMA identification and planning.

4. Module 4: Monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV)
The MRV Module of the FAO NAMA tool provides information on:
• MRV plan components
• NAMA impact monitoring methodologies
• GHG and non-GHG indicators
• Baseline determination and Ex-post assessment of the NAMA
impacts
• Tools and materials supporting NAMA implementation and MRV:
– emissions databases (e.g. FAOSTAT)
– estimation models (e.g. GLEAM)
– GHG emission calculators (e.g. EX-ACT) and
– land use assessment tools (e.g. Collect Earth)
• Reporting and verification process of NAMAs impacts
• Institutional arrangements for MRV.
5. FAOSTAT emissions database
FAO also provides a step-by-step guide for the estimation
of GHG emissions available in three languages:

Countries
The database supports NAMA MRV process through provision of:
• Activity data collected from member countries and GHG emission
estimates
• Baselines based on projections to 2030 and 2050 for agriculture
categories
• GHG emission estimates (Tier 1) which can serve as a reference
for quality assurance purposes.
6. New Emissions Analysis Tools supporting NAMAs to be
launched in 2015
• Regional Overview tool: Gives users an overview of emissions from the
agriculture and land use sectors for one or more countries and enables
trend analysis
• QA-QC and Verification tool: Enables QA/QC and verification of data,
including the identification of inconsistencies in the GHG inventory.
• Indicators tool: Allows users to analyze emissions indicators, expressed as
carbon intensity per unit product of a given commodity, against
productivity at country and regional level.
• Geo-referenced data tool: Enables browsing and downloading of geo-
referenced data (e.g. data on land cover, livestock, climate).

7. GLEAM in support of NAMA
What is GLEAM?
• Global Livestock Environmental Accounting Model (GLEAM) is a Tier 2
livestock sector specific biophysical model based on GIS which adopts a
life cycle assessment approach.
– Assesses emissions and emission intensities from livestock supply
chains
– Assesses technical mitigation potential of interventions and their
impact on productivity
– Covers main 11 global livestock commodities, and predominant
livestock production systems
Supports countries in the development of NAMAs
define baseline scenario and support countries to identify and set
priorities for the livestock sector
measure impacts of mitigation actions for the livestock sector
quantify sustainable development benefits e.g. productivity gains
8. GLEAMS’s support to a Dairy NAMA in Kenya
GLEAM is used as a tool to support:
• upscaling of methodology for the certification and monitoring of emission
reductions for the NAMA;
• generation of national emissions factors for the NAMA;
• identification of cost-effective mitigation actions; and
• development of monitoring approach tested at farm, cooperative, county
and national level.
