The document summarizes the multi-year exclusive deal between Tesla and AT&T that was signed in January 2014. Under the deal, AT&T will provide wireless connectivity and data services to power Tesla's remote diagnostics, telemetrics, navigation, and entertainment systems through the vehicles' 17-inch touchscreens. The partnership also includes the creation of an innovation center called the AT&T Drive Studio to develop new connected car technologies.
2. THE TESLA-ATT DEAL
• Tesla and AT&T signed a multi-year exclusive deal
that gives AT&T control over the Model S’ wireless
connectivity – January 2014.
• Under the new partnership AT&T wireless data will
power Tesla's remote engine diagnostics and
telemetrics.
• The carrier's network will also let drivers access
Internet radio, live traffic, weather, and navigation
through the car's 17-inch touchscreen
3. THE TESLA 17-INCH HAPTIC
NAVIGATION & ENTERTAINMENT SYSTEM
• 17-inch LCD touch
computer screen
• 3G or wireless Wi-Fi
connectivity
• Google Maps,
Pandora, etc.
5. THE TESLA-ATT DEAL
• The Connected Car Innovation Center – AT&T Drive
• The partnership also announced a new "connected
car innovation center" in Atlanta it calls the AT&T
Drive Studio and a "global automotive solution and
development platform" called AT&T Drive.
6. THE “ATT DRIVE” PLATFORM
AT&T Drive will have two components.
1.
AT&T Drive itself will be modular platform offering as a
technology to automakers. In its most basic form it will be a
connectivity module - provides core internet access to a car,
but automakers will be able to add on other technologies, from
managed cloud services to custom-designed apps, Lurie said.
2.
The second component is called Drive Studio, a physical 5,000square-foot “garage” in Atlanta where AT&T will develop new
products such as hands-free speech interfaces using its Watson
natural language understanding technology. Drive Studio will
be closely tied to its Foundry development center in Atlanta,
which happens to focus on the connected home and car.
7. THE TESLA-ATT DEAL
• Readers Notes - With the current release of Model S
firmware, the car can use any Wi-Fi, including
someone’s hotspot, so, if AT&T doesn’t work, tether
the car to some other network
8. THE TESLA-ATT DEAL
• All Tesla cars come equipped with AT&T network chips,
which allow two-way connections for services such as
roadside assistance and stolen-vehicle location, the
Dallas-based carrier said today.
• The Tesla service also includes Internet access,
navigation and entertainment on a 17-inch (43centimeter) touch screen.
• Tesla’s Model S receives wireless programming updates
via an installed cellular system to improve vehicle
operations. Such updates typically occur when the car is
recharging overnight.
9. THE TESLA-ATT DEAL
• AT&T's head of emerging devices, Glenn Lurie, told
CNNMoney these advancements reflect a major
step forward in converting cars from mindless
machines to intelligent gadgets.
• The car is really just going to become another
device in your life," Lurie said. "Our view at AT&T
(T, Fortune 500) is that everything is going to be
connected... making the car easier to
use, safer, reduce distracted driving and deliver
infotainment."
10. CEO QUOTES
• “It’s an honor to work with a company as innovative as
Tesla on delivering a connected experience inside
automobiles for both drivers and passengers,” said Ralph
de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility.
• “Tesla’s goal has always been to catalyze the market for
electric vehicles for all consumers while providing an
exceptional driving experience,” said Elon Musk, cofounder and CEO of Tesla. “AT&T’s advanced and
reliable wireless connectivity will help Tesla continue to
deliver a cutting-edge ownership experience.”
