Development of YYB in China
2000 2006 2012
Establish the base:
 Complimentary food
strategy was discussed by
ADB, China CDC, UNICEF.
The first YYB intervention
study in 5 poor counties was
conducted by Madam Chen
CM (2001-2006) .
 Nutritionists call on the
government to scale up YYB.
Scaling up by government :
 MOH permitted the scaling up of YYB as a
trial project supported by GAIN. Promoting
projects were conducted in some regions.
 National standard was established in 2008.
GB/T 22570-2008
 YYB has been used in intervention in 2008
Wenchuan earthquake regions in 8 counties of
three provinces, supported by UNICEF and
CDC. The established work model was
successful.
National nutrition improvement
project in poor rural regions:
 from 100 counties in 10 provinces
to 341 counties in 21 provinces.
 The fund for YYB and nutrition
education increased from 100
millions to 500 millions RMB.
 National food safety standard
GB 22570-2014 promulgated.

Implement institutions
 YYB project is accepted by infants and caretakers, about 4.23 million children benefited.
 The implementing systems of MCH, LCDC and women federation at county-township-
village level are efficient for the YYB project.
 Results of monitoring showed that the coverage and compliance reached planned target.
Reduction of stunting and anemia were remarkable.
Future
 Improve the bidding system of products supply, in order to assure the quality of products
 Monitor and evaluate other indicators (cognitive performance, vitamins and minerals
status), the cost-benefit analysis is important for policy-makers.
 Marketing in urban and other rural areas
