2. GENERAL INFORMATION ON
PIRAEUS
Piraeus (ancient Greek: Pireefs) is a city, part of the
Athens Metropolitan Area and has the most important
port of Greece. Piraeus is included in the Municipality of
Piraeus. The Regional Unit of Piraeus consists of (
Nikea-Agios Ioannis Renti, Korydallos, Keratsini-
Drapetsona and Perama. It occupies the southwestern
part of the Capital Region and is the third largest city in
Greece.
3. THE PORT OF
PIRAEUS
Piraeus in modern times is an
important industrial and
commercial center of the country,
and has the largest port in Europe
4. CREATION OF THE
CITY OF PIRAEUS
Piraeus was proposed in 1832 by
Gutensohn, the architect of Louis I
of Bavaria, as the capital of Greece,
which would gradually expand to
Athens, but eventually Athens was
chosen as the capital and Piraeus
was later incorporated in the
district of the capital.
5. KASTELA CLASSIC
NEIGHBORHOOD
It is, by and large, one of the most
beautiful (if not the most beautiful)
neighborhoods of Piraeus: The Kastella
hill, with its old mansions, the quiet
streets with the winds and the stairs
that replace the streets in many places .
If you start to walk from its highest
point, you will quickly notice that its
alleys (or stairs)lead you almost all the
way down to its ... balcony: The wide
pavement on the "bank" of
Papanastasiou Avenue, which looks
like hanging over the Microlimano
6. THE MANIATIKA
The Maniates(coming from the historic
region of Mani in the Peloponnese)
especially honor St. Nicholas. Their
intense presence at sea, either as
pirates as merchants or as sailors,
created the need to pray to their
patron saint. Numerous churches in
the name of the Saint are found across
Mani and also at the port of Piraeus
one can find the impressive church in
his name. The picturesque
neighborhood of Maniatika just over
the port was built by workers from
Mani coming to Piraeus in search of a
better life. It is filled with narrow alleys
and small houses.
