Evaluation Question 3
This piece of work is shared by Ethan Lucey & Grace Chadwick.
It was completed with equal contribution.
Defining the audience by demographics
Our target audience age group is between 16-24. This targets Generation Z- where people are believed to be more expressive about their opinions. The indie genre is
known for producing controversial music that often involves political standpoints. We target all genders, as the genre is more current and accepting, this also applies
to sexuality- we just target people in general between the defined age group regardless of these two factors. We’re not targeting a certain social class, as anyone from
any economic background can appreciate the genre of music we’re producing- however we’d keep costs low for live music etc as our audience is young and may still
be in full time education. Our target audience involves people with interests in music instruments, unique dressing style, indie trends, social media perhaps political
interests. Our audience dislikes prejudice, the pop industry, and the right-wing.
The indie subculture is composed of fashion and music. The fashion is composed of vintage and re-released clothing, skateboarding inspired fashion, band attire,
homemade clothing and skinny fit fashion. Indie fashion can be quite minimalistic or outgoing, however large brand names are rarely on show. Fast fashion retailers
such as H&M, Topshop and Forever 21 cater to the subculture, as they offer cheap, trending clothing. Music is another factor which contributes to building the indie
subculture. It usually involves music from the past, such as The Smiths, The Beatles and other 50s/-90s bands. However it also involves new bands, and the indie
subculture is known for supporting the live music scenes in their local areas. This means they support new and upcoming indie bands. The music within their
preferred genre can involve political opinions and other controversial topics.
Defining a target audience is important in the media industry because it allows them to focus on attracting a specific group of people. Knowing who your target
audience is can affect costs such as ticket prices and album sales- this is important as you need to know the amount of money your audience would pay for your
content. For example, concerts would need to be cheap and affordable to that our target audience could afford to attend- whereas if the target audience was
unknown, then the turnout numbers could be low, as the concert price and or location didn’t cater to our audience. Furthermore you need to know your target audience
for advertisement. This is because you want to know where to advertise your brand for the highest possible exposure to your audience. For indie, advertisement would
be most easily done through social media sites where the user base fits our target age group.
Evaluate your methods of gathering feedback
Audience feedback is invaluable to the media industry as it allows companies to rework their products in order to suit the needs of the target
audience. Feedback will be sorted and totalled based on number of requests. The most requested for ideas would be taken into consideration- and if
they saw any potential profit in following through with the idea then they’d make it happen. Requests need to filtered in order to suit the majorities
needs, for example, if three people requested something it probably wouldn’t be considered; alternatively, if three-hundred fans all had the same
feedback then it would be looked into.
Feedback is gathered through emails, possibly surveys and other uses of social media interaction. This can involve YouTube comment sections,
where fans can leave a like rating and then reflect on their reasons why. Feedback can also be given back through live stream chats, fan forums,
twitter, instagram, snapchat and other forms of social networking. Our website has a contact us feature which enables our website users to contact
us with ease.
Final feedback

Overall, all three products were very well received with many respondents saying positive things about them. Many people commented on the costumes, and how the
performer suited the genre and the song well. This gave us a lot of confidence in knowing that we’d made a suitable product for our chosen genre: indie. The digipak
was praised for its creativity and the links between each panel- this was created through the digipak having; quotes from respondents: Good layout, simple but
effective, good original work, literal display of the song title, good choice of colour, consistency. We feel as though the digipak was very well received. However we
did receive one negative comment concerning the digipak which was: “You could have ensured all tracks were the same colour”. Although this feedback is
respected, we must disregard this comment as the issue highlighted was done purposefully to make the track displayed in the video stand out more.
The video also received many positive comments. These includes things such as: good lighting, good performance, appropriate to genre, good narrative, ending
works well. We also received some criticism: drums out of sync, drummer wearing lanyard, digipak doesn’t fit what the video is showing. From these points, we know
how we can improve. We will have to re-film the footage involving the lanyard, we will find ways to add more elements of the digipak into the video, and we will make
sure we edit it more accurately to get the drums in sync with the audio.
