2. Greetings from the
Key Leadership
Scout Executive & CEO
Ethan V. Draddy
Commissioner
Thomas S. Bain
Dear Friend of Scouting,
Your investment in our Scouting and Exploring programs is an investment in
New York City. Thanks to dedicated volunteers and staff who care about youth
in NYC, this past year had many highlights of growth and achievement.
2014 marks our fifth year in a row of membership growth in NYC, and we are
on our way to fulfilling our vision of serving 50,000 youth. Volunteer leadership
is essential, and this year we recruited 22 new Board members. These men
and women are helping us connect to alumni and broaden our outreach in un-
derserved neighborhoods. Camping attendance is up, helping us keep kids in
Scouting longer. We are especially grateful that we have new significant capital
projects in all camp properties to better serve the next generation of Scouts.
Our programs build character in our young people, an investment that is repaid
many times as they in turn offer their time, talents, and leadership to strengthen
our community. This year, Kenneth Shinozuka, an Eagle Scout from Washing-
ton Heights, was recognized by Scientific American for his life-saving device
he had developed for Alzheimer’s patients. A Bronx Eagle Scout, Jack Dailey,
was awarded the Honor Medal with Crossed Palms for saving two neighbors
from a fire. And Anthony Vargas, an NYPD Explorer, launched an anti-bullying
campaign, speaking at the United Nations and at City Hall. In all, Scouts and
Explorers contributed over 250,000 hours of service this year. New York City is
a better place when kids have opportunities to be challenged to do more and
give back. Thank you for your investment in our Scouts and our city!
With deep gratitude and appreciation,

Our Mission: The Greater New York Councils, Boy Scouts of America has
helped over five million young people become “Prepared for Life.” The mission
of the Boy Scouts of America is to prepare young people to make ethical and
moral choices. The vision of the Greater New York Councils is to serve kids
and their families throughout the diverse communities of New York City and
to help them to prepare for success in school, career, and life.

4. Program Highlights
TRADITIONAL Volunteer-Led SCOUTING (Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts)
Our volunteer-led Cub Scout program served 4,792 boys in grades one through five. Boy Scout
Troops served 4,650 boys from sixth grade through age 18. Several local Scouts were lauded for
extraordinary service and action “doing a good turn” in our community this year. Our nominee for the
2014 Eagle Scout Project of the Year is Alex Lola, who constructed a mobile Greenhouse on Brook-
lyn’s Gowanus Canal to grow native plants and raise environmental awareness. Washington Heights
Eagle Scout Kenneth Shinozuka won the 2014 Scientific American Science in Action Award for a
sensor device he invented to help keep his grandfather and other Alzheimer’s patients safe and warn
caregivers when they start to wander. 15 year-old Kenneth was selected as a delegate to represent
the 2.5 million youth members of BSA during the 2014 Report to the Nation in Washington, DC in
February 2015 and meet President Obama.
“I could not be more proud of our support over the years.”
Peter Sloane, Chairman, Heckscher Foundation for Children, supporter of New York City Scout-
ing and Exploring
“This program teaches boys how to grow and develop into well-rounded men. I am inspired to give back and hopefully be-
come a Scoutmaster one day. Scouting has given a deeper meaning to my life.”
Michael Sorenson, Boy Scout
“Scouting has taught me persistence to do my best in everything I do. I work my hardest to
achieve the best grades that I can in school. Scouting has changed my life. It has helped me to
become a leader.”
Christine Warne, Sea Scout
SCOUTREACH
This Scouting program is delivered with paid Program Specialist leaders to
address the lack of volunteer capacity in disadvantaged neighborhoods. We
continued to expand enrollment in Scoutreach, serving 9,292 boys in first through fifth grades from
over 52 of New York City’s most low-income neighborhood public schools. We launched an anti-bul-
lying campaign, holding a retreat at Alpine Scout Camp for 600 Bronx school children. This summer,
950 Scoutreach Cub Scouts attended summer camp at Alpine Scout Camp, and 45 Bronx Scouts
travelled to Camp Seton Scout Reservation in Connecticut for a day of fishing, scout skills, and out-
door adventures.
“The Boy Scouts of America has taught me honor, loyalty, and discipline. They also taught us how to handle ourselves in emergencies.”

5. Program Highlights
EXPLORING
This worksite-based career exploration program served 7,134 young men and women ages 14-20 this
year. We added many new Exploring posts this year in a variety of industries, including law enforce-
ment, health, and hospitality. Explorers contributed close to 130,000 hours of service in the five bor-
oughs this year, from disaster relief, walk-a-thons, and much more. We congratulate our NYC Explorers
for their team competition results at the Law Enforcement National Competition: 12 top five finishes!
“As a DEA Explorer I have helped my community through outreach programs, participated in numerous tactical training ses-
sions, competed in the National Law Enforcement Conference in Atlanta, and have been approved for an internship with the
DEA in New York.”
Victoria Cirulli, Drug Enforcement Administration Explorer
OUTDOOR PROGRAMS
New capital projects will enhance programs at our three iconic outdoor properties. At Ten Mile River
Scout Reservation in Narrowsburg, NY, preparations are underway for the Billy and Keith Johnson
Scout Center to be located at Camp Aquehonga, offering enhanced STEM programming and more,
with a generous $500,000 gift from New York Jets owner Woody Johnson. Special thanks to the
Rudin family as well as Tom and Pat Bain for their ongoing support of improvements at Ten Mile Riv-
er, including the Camp Keowa Dining Hall and shooting sports program, and our Troop Campsites.
At Alpine Scout Camp in Alpine, NJ, this summer we celebrated the 20th anniversary of the John E.
Reeves Cub World, and have received a $600,000 challenge pledge from J.E. Reeves, Jr. toward
ongoing improvements here, including the John C. Whitehead Dining Hall, comfort stations, and the
Aquatics Center.
We received a $50,000 gift from the Richmond County Savings Foundation to rebuild Beech Cabin
at William H. Pouch Scout Camp in Staten Island. We are delighted to report a new partnership with
Kaboom! to construct a new playground at Camp Pouch in the coming year.
“Camping was the best experience of my life!”

10. In Memoriam...
Alan (“Ace”) C. Greenberg, Vice
Chairman Emeritus JP Morgan. Ace was
a longtime Board member, Silver Bea-
ver Award recipient, past honoree and
Chairman of the Financial Tribute Dinner,
and our 2014 “Good Scout” posthumous
honoree at our Financial Tribute Dinner. We
have created the Alan (“Ace”) C. Green-
berg Memorial Fund in his honor, to sup-
port outdoor adventures for NYC Scouts.
Dr. Leopold Hedbavny, Jr., was
a lifelong educator and served in the
U.S. Army during the Korean War.
He was active in the Boy Scouts for
over 70 years, including serving as
President and Commissioner of the
Queens Council, and was a recipient
of the Silver Beaver Award.
Charles E. Rosser, Retired Scout
Executive and CEO, led the Greater
New York Councils as our Scout Ex-
ecutive for nine years, retiring in 2013.
During his tenure, we had three con-
secutive years of membership growth,
balanced budgets, and growing camp
attendance. He had an extensive
Scouting career in several Councils
across the country.
Karl Bernstein, An Eagle Scout,
Ten Mile River Camp Staff Member, Karl
was a longtime member of our Brooklyn
Borough Board, founding member of the
Brooklyn Heritage Society, and a recipient
of the Silver Beaver Award.
I joined the board of the Boy Scouts
of New York City. The board then was
run by two titans—John McGillicuddy
was president, and John Whitehead
was chairman. John Whitehead had
been president for years prior, and on
the board for several decades. The
organization was very important to him
because he had been a Scout as a boy,
earning his Eagle Scout medal in 1937.
Then as now, a boy must earn a fixed
number of badges to qualify. John earned that number, and then
continued to earn all the rest of the badges then available. That,
too, was classic John, giving a job all you’ve got.
John was involved with scouting for 80 years. He knew what
scouting had done for him, and he repaid more than fully so that
other boys could share in the camping and character-building
activities that Scouting provides. He was a generous benefactor,
and called upon his immense web of admirers to do likewise. For
many people, if John Whitehead asked, they could not and would
not refuse. His name opened doors and he was willing to put his
reputation to the service of our organization. And he insisted that
scouting should be open and available to all young people and adult
volunteers eager to participate.
For his 92nd birthday last year, we surprised him at his office with a
group of Scouts bringing cupcakes and singing to him. There were
broad smiles all around, as John told the boys about his difficulties
in passing the Scout swimming test and the Scouts reveled in the
presence of a national hero in the Normandy invasion.
John had a deep sense of service that underpinned everything
he did, whether his service in the Navy, his development of 12
principles to guide action at Goldman Sachs, his tenure as deputy
secretary of state, or his leadership in countless organizations over
the years, including Haverford College, the Brookings Institution,
the International Rescue Committee, the Federal Reserve Bank of
New York, the Lower
Manhattan Development
Corp. and the two
organizations in which I
have also been involved.
I know no one like him,
and doubt I ever will.
