2. • Hildegard Von Bingen was born at Böckelheim,
a castle on the Nahe River in Germany.
• At birth she was dedicated to the church.
• At age eight she was placed under the care of
Jutta, who taught her to read and sing Latin
psalms.
• Hildegard was a sickly child, but was given the
gift of visions. These visions continued
throughout her life and she became known as
somewhat of a prophetess.
• She was given the name “Sybil of the Rhine.”
3. • At the age of forty, Hildegard was commanded to
record and share her visions with the world.
• People throughout Germany came to her for wisdom,
clarity, and advice. These included bishops, popes, and
kings.
• On several occasions Hildegard traveled across the
country sharing her vision and insight.
• She was the first composer whose biography is known.
• Hildegard also founded a convent in which her music
was performed.
• After her death in 1179, she was buried in the church
of Rupertsburg.
• She is set to be canonized as a saint by the Roman
Catholic Church in October 2012.
4. The Works of Hildegard
• Hildegard produced many works of theology and
other church documents.
• She also wrote treatises on natural history and
medicinal uses of animals and plants.
• She wrote music and texts that were mostly
liturgical chant and antiphons.
• Hildegard describes music as “the means of
recapturing the original joy and beauty of
paradise.”
• Much of her music is said to sound like that of
angels singing.
