CHALLENGES FOR THE AGRI-FOOD
INDUSTRY
This industry produces wastewater that is difficult to treat, as it has a high organic matter
content. The cost of treating this waste is very high and discharge fees vary from €30,000 to
€300,000 per year, a very high cost that many SMEs cannot afford and in many cases it is even
more profitable to pay the penalties than to make the investment.
On the other hand, there is an urgent need to comply with the regulatory frameworks set by
the European Union. These have recently been updated with increasingly stringent restrictions
to control waste generation and comply with the SDGs (Agenda 2030).
In addition, each company has to deal with specific challenges that are specific to its own
business activity, such as seasonality problems, dispersed relocation, limited space or very high
operating costs due to intensive energy use.

7. What is Anaergy?
Anaergy is a technology founded by the
EU Programme H2020 SME Instrument
Phase 2
It is the first time that a modular system
has been designed that integrates
aerobic, anaerobic and advanced
oxidation technology, allowing different
combinations depending on the needs.
This technology represents a
breakthrough in industrial wastewater
treatment.

It achieves a high organic matter (- BOD)
(-COD) removal rate at a very low cost.
It is a modern technological solution that
optimises the technology to the maximum to
reduce the associated operating,
maintenance and investment costs.
