 Package ac is a bigger version of the
window air conditioner.
 It has a higher cooling or heating capacity
and is usually able to cool an entire house
or commercial building.
 The nominal capacities ranges from 3
tonne to 15 tonne.
 it also has 2 units: indoor unit and outdoor
unit.
 This self contained unit is assembled in a
casing where all the air conditioning
components are housed. They include:
 Compressor
 Water cooled or air cooled condenser
 Electric panel
 Thermosatic expansion valve
 Air filter
 Front panel
 Evaporator fan and housing
 heating and humidifying components:
 The condenser used in a package air
conditioner can be air-cooled or water-
cooled type.
 air-cooled type is usually for capacity below
5 tone and water-cooled for capacity above 5
tone.
 The capacity of air-cooled type is lower
than that of water-cooled condenser using
the same compressor.
 In water cooled condenser- all components are
assembled at the factory site. The gas charging is
also done at the factory thus one does not have to
perform the complicated operations of the laying
piping, evacuation, gas charging and leak testing at
the site.
 In air-cooled condenser- There is a outdoor unit
that comprises of the important components like
the compressor, condenser and in some cases the
expansion valve.
 In the air distribution, centrifugal fans are
usually provided at the evaporator side
which can develop higher static pressure.
 Air distribution is done through ducts and
grills.
 The air quantities are usually in the range of
10-11.3 cubic meter/min per tone.
 In critical application such as computer
room which need higher rate of air
flow, higher capacity fans with air flow up to
550 cfm are provided.
 In some units,two independent
refrigeration systems are include
in the package. In this case, the
cooling coils have a common tube
sheets though the two systems are
independent.
 Two separate water-cooled
condenser or a condenser with an
internal partition that forms two
independent condensers are used.
 It is a common practice to have
one compressor running all the time with the other
compressor control by a single-stage thermostat.In
this case, the capacity can be controlled
either to 50% to 100%.
 Package units are unique, all-in-one self
contained systems that supply both cooling and
heating equipment in one “package”. These units
can be situated in a mechanical room, at grade
adjacent to the condition space or on the rooftop
of home or business.
 Unlike split system, package units combine a
condenser coil, evaporator coil, cooling fan,
compressor and in many models, a gas furnace
all in the same unit. All are equipped with a
blower (centrifugal fan) to distribute the
conditioned air throughout the structure.
 Package units come in
three variants:-
 Package heat pumps offering
heating/cooling using heat pump
technology.
 Packaged air conditioners to
cool your residence or business
and can heat it as well, using
electric resistance heat strips
during the cold winter season.
 Packaged gas-electric units
offer all-in-one air conditioning
and natural or LPG gas- powered
furnace performance.
 Space efficiency- Unlike split systems units,
all components of complete heating and
cooling system are contained in one
location,making package units ideal for
scenarios in which indoor space is at a
premium.
 Energy efficient heating and cooling
performance- All package units now offer 13
SEER or higher cooling performance. Gas
package units offer 80% AFUE heating
performance or better.
 Low initial investment- Manufacturers can
carefully match component capacity and efficiency
to maximize performance in a tightly integrated
cost effective package.
 Quick installation- Since all components are
factory preassembled little on-site fabrication is
necessary thereby eliminating many of the
challenges of split system installation.
 Aesthetics- Package units have virtually zero
living or commercial space requirements.
 Safety- Package units are installed by certified
professionals who understand the technical
challenges of constructing a gas supply system high
voltage wiring, high pressure refrigerant lines and
routing critical condensate lines.
