  2. 2. Introduction  An alumnus of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Erol Onel, MD, serves as a vice president at Heron Therapeutics, Inc., a biotechnology company in La Jolla, California. Over his decades-long career, Dr. Erol Onel has maintained membership in a number of medical groups, including the American Urological Association (AUA). According to a recent AUA study, an increasing number of urologists are reporting that they are experiencing burnout at a higher rate than physicians in other specialties. Using the Maslach Burnout Inventory, which measures both emotional exhaustion and depersonalization, researchers found that nearly 39 percent of urologists report feeling burned out. Breaking the data down, only 17.2 percent of urologists reported high scores on the emotional exhaustion portion of the evaluation, which is on par with other physicians. Depersonalization scores, however, were much higher, with 37.1 percent reporting that they were experiencing it. Researchers concluded that the overall rate of 39 percent burnout requires immediate attention in an effort to help alleviate the physical and psychological burdens that urologists are experiencing.
