Village
When Colin Underhill ’00 graduated from
the University of Georgia after a successful
swimming career, he made a decision to
move back to Louisville and join the family
business. Underhill Associates, founded by
Colin’s grandfather in 1968, is now in its
third generation. As the company grows,
so too does Colin’s desire to keep more
young professionals in the city and avoid the
dreaded “brain drain.” One of his goals has
been to create a more vibrant and sexier
lifestyle for 25- to 35-year-olds. Thus, in 2007,
his Westport Village project was launched.
Nestled in the neighborhood once known
as “Camelot,” Westport Village, an upscale
development of boutique shops and casual
restaurants, was almost dead before it got
started. Naysayers were out in full force
when plans were announced, but Colin
wanted to buck the trend of big ideas
not coming to fruition in Louisville. The self-
proclaimed “half-glass-full kind of guy” says
that “every failure has an equal or greater
opportunity.” By 2010, Westport Village
was filling up with well-known tenants
and being touted as “hugely successful.”
So what’s next for Colin?
His new project is the Pluris Fund, a real
estate investment fund designed to give
individuals a chance to be involved with a
tangible asset and work with local people.
From April 2009 until now, the Pluris Fund
has acquired $70 million worth of apartment
units in Orlando, Fla. Other opportunities in
Louisville are also on the horizon. In Colin’s
words, “If you’re not growing, you’re dying.”
The typical challenges of working in a family
business still exist. Colin reminds himself
that listening more and respecting each other’s
comments have kept the business thriving.
He states, “My family is number one behind
my religion and God.” The morals, values, and
unconditional love and support the Underhill’s
live by will surely guarantee the family business
survives to see a fourth generation.

own Chief
Oceanographer
at the
U.S. Naval
Academy
Nearly two-thirds of the Earth’s surface is
covered by water. The oceans’ mammoth
bodies of water are not inanimate, as the
currents move water from place to place and
a myriad of measurements help scientists
solve complex equations to predict tomorrow’s
weather. Dr. David Smith ’67 has devoted
his career to teaching this type of math
and science through Oceanography and
Meteorology, and it’s with this passion he
is involved with many of our nation’s future
ship captains and naval aviators.
David currently serves as the Chairman of
the Oceanography Department at the United
States Naval Academy, where in 2009 he
was selected by his peers for the Academy’s
prestigious Teaching Excellence Award. He
has worked on numerous projects utilizing
the physical aspects of oceanography to
understand its impact on potentially harmful
weather formations or to predict climate
changes. David shares his knowledge of the
ocean and the atmosphere, not only with his
students at the Naval Academy, but with
science teachers nationwide. He is the
co-director of the Maury Project, a nationally
acclaimed program in physical oceanography
in conjunction with the American
Meteorological Society.
David credits his love of and success in math
and science from lessons learned at St. X
from great teachers like Brothers Emeric,
The brothers’ success in scouting can be
credited to their parents’ love for the outdoors
and insistence that the family embraces
social diversity in school and out. Becoming
a “citizen of the world” was and continues
to be important for the family, as the
Steinbock’s spend time overseas and credit
their foreign language experiences at St. X
for their comfort level in international travel.
The brothers do have day jobs, of course.
Andy, Allen, David and sister Anne manage
and operate the 92-year-old family company,
Whip Mix, which continues to grow and
change as new technologies in the dental
industry develop. The company employs 200
people in Louisville, Colorado and Germany.
Brothers Ted and Greg forged different paths
as physicians. Ted is a radiologist with X-Ray
Associates and Greg is a urologist with
First Urology. Their sister Lynn also calls
Louisville home.
It’s mid-summer, and the Steinbock family
gathers at their mother’s Louisville home for
dinner. All are present and eager to tell their
favorite stories about their St. X experience.
The lessons of personal responsibility, self-
confidence and a can-do attitude taught by
Xaverian Brothers Leroy, Wilfrid, Cury, and
Eddie are mentioned by all as the hallmark
of a St. X education.
That belief in themselves, taught at home
and at school, has proved successful for
the Steinbocks in both their personal and
professional lives. It has also afforded each
of them the opportunity to give back to
St. X and the scouting community.

A Scouting
Tradition
Saturdays are normally set aside for recreation,
not work. Companies across the region shut
down for the weekend, their parking lots
left empty. Not so for Whip Mix Corporation,
a manufacturer of dental equipment and
supplies located just south of Papa John’s
Cardinal Stadium. On any given Saturday in
the fall, the Whip Mix parking lot is full, cars
parked end to end, and business is hopping.
But the plant adjacent to the lot is quiet; no
employees are present. Rather, the parking
lot of Whip Mix, a company owned and
operated by the Steinbock family, is bustling
with Boy Scouts as a troop parks cars for
University of Louisville football games earning
much-needed funding.
A commitment to scouting is at the center
of the Steinbock family’s life, and all five
Steinbock brothers, St. X graduates Andy
’67, Allen ’68, Ted ’70, David ’71 and
Greg ’72, have the designations to prove it.
All have earned their Eagle Scout rank and
stay active in Troop 1 in Crescent Hill as
past and present leaders and supporters.
That commitment to service has carried
over to other parts of their lives, including
their devotion to St. X. The family counts
14 St. X graduates among their ranks,
including two with board ties. David
currently serves on the Advancement
Committee and Greg’s wife, Beth, is
a former member of the quite successful
Project X Campaign Cabinet.

Summer
Renovation
While students are away on summer break,
there is still plenty of activity in the classrooms
on campus. Two major renovation projects
are underway and scheduled to be completed
before classes resume in mid-August.
The largest project is the renovation of
classroom spaces that have remained
essentially the same since St. X moved to
the Poplar Level campus. Both floors of
the Chapel Wing in the 1961 Building will
be completely refurbished, including the
removal of all radiators and air conditioners.
All new heating and air conditioning, new
floors, ceilings, lights, paint, white boards,
and desks will be added. A new physics lab
will be built in room 109 and a new biology
lab in room 209. Additionally, some of the
campus ministry offices will be renewed.
The Hoeck Center will get new heating and
air conditioning, requiring changes in the

Graduates
Saint Xavier held its commencement exercises
on May 22, 2011, in Broadbent Arena.
The 139th graduating class of 312 young
men featured 10 students recognized
by the National Merit Corporation, 15
Kentucky Governor’s Scholars, two Kentucky
Governor’s School for the Arts Recipients, and
one appointment each to the United States
Naval Academy and the United States
Military Academy at West Point. The group
boasted 543 scholarships totaling over
$18.8 million and 11,650 service hours
to the Louisville community. The 2011 class
pushed the number of total alumni to
over 25,000.
Will Ford and Zach Thompson achieved
Perfect Attendance for 12 years. Michael
Blum received the Xaverian Award, the
highest honor bestowed upon a graduating
senior. Additionally, the Outstanding
Alumnus Award was presented to Tom
Musselman, Class of 1954. Tom is founder
of Musselman Hotels. In addition to being
a member of the St. X Alumni Hall of
Honors and the University of Louisville
Athletic Hall of Fame, Tom was named one
of the University of Louisville’s Distinguished
Alumni in 2002 and was honored at the
2006 Salute to Catholic School Alumni.

Receives
Service Award
The Paulie Walsh ’63 Volunteer
Service Award is given annually at Saint
Xavier’s Volunteer Appreciation Reception.
It recognizes an individual or group who has
selflessly served Saint Xavier High School by
donating countless volunteer hours. Named
for Paulie Walsh ’63†, who embodied the
true spirit of volunteerism, this individual or
group is recognized for their “behind-the-
scenes” efforts and true devotion to the
young men of St. X.
Pete Wimsatt ‘72 was presented the
award on June 3. He has volunteered at
St. X in various capacities throughout the
years. He has served as Class Agent
since 2002, becoming involved with class
reunions and Alumni Phonathon recruitment.
Pete recently completed two terms as a
member of the Alumni Association Board
of Directors. He has chaired three different
committees, served as Secretary and also
as the Association President last year.
Pete has volunteered his time at multiple
Open Houses, the Alumni Association booth
at the St. Joe Picnic, and at the former
Xtravaganza benefit.

Winning Fine
Arts Program
The Alliance for Young Artists & Writers,
a national organization, has recognized
Saint Xavier for the school’s commitment
to the creative arts. The school community,
academic chairs and administrators, and
English and Fine Arts faculty support
“creative excellence as represented by
student work selected for national honors.”
The Alliance counts Saint Xavier students
among the most talented in the nation
based on the Gold Key Regional entries to
the national competition. National Award
winners represent the top 1% of the 2011
Scholastic Art & Writing Awards. On May
31, rising junior Ian Timothy received
two national gold medals in Film and
Animation for his animated series Beaver
Creek. (He won three gold medals last year.)
Additionally, Justin Allard ’11 won a
national silver medal for his Creative
Writing Portfolio.

replaced in order to facilitate the renovations.
The final summer project is the addition of
a wireless infrastructure throughout all of
our classroom buildings. All instructional
areas will have wireless Internet and network
access when students and faculty return
in August.

As you can imagine, Eric’s academic and
career resume exudes excellence. He is
forthright about his education at St. X
and indicates the competitiveness and the
camaraderie gave him the momentum
to excel at Princeton. The 43-year-old
entrepreneur maintains that “excellence
is a day-in and day-out attitude.” You can
be certain he is in the planning stages of
another project on a quest for continued

ost college undergrads would
like to think they have it all
figured out when it comes to
planning their future, only to realize they
made a wrong career choice. After all, it’s
not easy to make such a difficult decision
without experience. Eric Barnes, however,
was testing the water in college and
found out he had a knack for vision and
implementation.Today, he is an accomplished
entrepreneur, currently involved with three
different companies.
After graduating from St. X in 1986, Eric
was recruited to play football at Princeton
University.And since an Ivy League education
wasn’t cheap, he was a recipient of financial
aid and also working to offset those expenses.
He recalls flipping eggs one Sunday morning
as an undergrad and coming to the realization
that there was a better way.
The self-motivated athlete started selling
T-shirts to residents of the various dorms,
which are identified by house names.
That stint became so successful that the
Princeton University Store got in on his
gig and started selling his T-shirts for him.
During that time, he forged relationships
with other Ivy League campus bookstores,
which would later prepare him for his first
business venture.
Eric graduated magna cum laude from
Princeton in 1990 with a degree in economics
and after a very short career at Smith Barney
and Home Box Office in New York, he
returned to school. In 1997, Eric received his
MBA from the Stern School of Business at
New York University, all the while continuing
to get orders for his T-shirts. An opportunity
with EMI Music took Eric and his wife
west to Los Angeles and ultimately Orange
County. However, in 2000, Eric finally
embraced his entrepreneur instincts and
launched Ivysport (www.ivysport.com), the
official clothing company for the Ivy League.
Two years later, he moved the business from
his garage to an office park and today it is
the largest online retailer of Ivy League
merchandise. He is currently chairman of
the privately held company.
Eric’s next Internet startup was envisioned
after connecting with a former Princeton
classmate who had a successful private
tutoring practice. They determined a real
need existed for providing online video
instruction by expert teachers to help
students of all abilities achieve their
educational goals. Eric’s Internet experience
combined with his friend’s teaching
expertise allowed them to establish ePrep
(www.eprep.com) in 2005. The digital
learning company uses a well-established
“test-grade-review” methodology and a
broadband online video platform to deliver
dynamic, personal, and expert instruction
at the critical “review” stage of learning.
For the past three years, St. X juniors and
seniors have benefited from ePrep services,
which have been donated by Eric.
In addition to offering prep courses for ACT,
SAT, SAT II, PSAT, PLAN, and SSAT (secondary
school admission test) via its website,
ePrep has established strategic distribution
partnerships with Sylvan Learning Centers,
Recorded Books (public libraries), and
Naviance, which is a comprehensive college
and career planning tool for families.
At the same time that Eric founded ePrep,
he was taking on another challenge to fulfill
a more personal mission. Conflicted that
the explosion of bottled water sales were
contributing to an environmental waste
problem, Eric set out to design and market

Shillelagh Cup
Victory
For the second consecutive year, the annual
Shillelagh Cup golf outing will return to
Audubon Country Club as the Alumni
Associations from St. X and Trinity battle for
bragging rights on the greens. The Shillelagh
Cup is a match-play contest modeled after
the Ryder Cup, which features a combination
of two-ball matches and four-ball matches.
In last year’s competition, the Tiger alumni
defeated a strong Shamrock group 13-11
and now lead the series with 5 victories
versus Trinity’s four, with two ties. The rivalry,
which always takes place the Monday of the
St. X vs. Trinity football game week, will
be held September 26 with a 1:00 p.m.
shotgun start. Golfers are needed for
this event and an official handicap is
required. The cost is $140 per person and
includes golf, fees, shirt, and dinner. Visit

graduated in June from Ohio State’s College of Medicine

year in Ecuador studying critically endangered harlequin
frogs and providing healthcare to an indigenous village in
the Amazon rainforest.

men’s soccer at the University of Louisville. He previously

Bobby Curtis moved to the #7 spot, ahead of former
marathon great, Alberto Salazar, on the U.S. all-time list
for 10,000 meters. Running in the 2011 Payton Jordan
Cardinal invitational in Palo Alto, Cal., on May 1, Curtis’
race time of 27 minutes, 24.67 seconds is a personal best
and is better than the Olympic A standard for the 10,000
meters. Curtis finished second in the race to Kenyan
runner Bedan Karoki.
Justin Waskey flew one of two SH-60B US Navy
helicopters during 2011 Thunder Over Louisville. The event
is ranked as one of the top five air shows in the nation.
While at St. X, Justin was an All-State soccer player. He
graduated in 2008 from the United States Naval Academy.

Collin Wainscott was the recipient of the 2011 Gwong
Sun Scholarship at the University of Louisville. The
scholarship is awarded to an undergraduate student in
Computer Engineering and Computer Science department
with an outstanding academic record and potential for
achievement in their professional career.
Congratulations to Ben Kolb, a member of Bellarmine
University’s track and field team, for winning the
Decathlon at the Great Lakes Valley Conference Outdoor
Track and Field Championships May 8 at Missouri
University of Science & Technology. Ben tallied 6,330
points breaking a conference record which was set in
2003. Ben was also named GLVC Freshman Athlete of the
Meet. The Bellarmine Knights finished runner-up in the
Championships, which is the program’s highest achievement.
