Objectives:
1. Differentiate physical from chemical
properties;
2. Observe materials and give their properties;
and
3. Recognize their strengths and weaknesses.
EVERYTHING THAT
SURROUNDS US IS
MATTER.
WHAT IS
MATTER?
Matter
-anything that occupies space and has mass
-it is made up of particles such as molecules and
atoms
-it is generally classified into three basic
phases/states: solid, liquid and gas, with plasma
sometimes added as the fourth state for
scientific purposes.
Strengths

Weaknesses
Properties of Matter
1. Physical Properties- this can be observed or
measured without changing the substance into
another substance.
2. Chemical Properties-properties that can only
be identified when one substance reacts with
another substance.
Physical Properties
a. Intensive Properties- properties that depend
on the kind of matter regardless of the amount
- whether the amount is smaller or
bigger, these properties do not change
Ex. density, boiling point, melting point, color,
texture, solubility, metallic properties like
malleability and ductility, hardness
Density- the ability
of an object to
float or sink in
water due to its
mass and volume
Boiling, Melting
and Freezing
Point of an
object is fixed.
Ductility- the ability
of metals to be
turned into wires.
Malleability- the
ability of metals to
be hammered into
thin sheets.
Brittleness- the
ability of matter
to be broken
easily.
Physical Properties
a. Extensive Properties- properties that depend
on the amount of the matter
- it means that if the amount of matte is
small, its quantity is small too.
Ex. mass, volume, length, height, area
Chemical Properties
Examples:
a. combustion/flammability- the ability to burn
b. corrosion- the gradual destruction of metals like
rusting of iron
c. oxidation- combination of substance with
oxygen such as the browning of fruits when
exposed to the air.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
a. The victims of a shipwreck hold tight on their
floaters so that they will not sink in the water.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
b. Mother used LPG to heat the water that will be
used in cooking her favorite dish.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
c. The carpenter hammered the iron sheet so that it
will be more flattened and it can fit to the table that
he is making.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
d. The chef put the frozen canister out the freezer to
let the ice melt before he cook its content.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
e. The father smoked the meat so that it will be
tenderized.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
f. The school add an extension building to come up
with more rooms and to accommodate more
students.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
g. The construction workers made the floor rough so
that pedestrians will not slip off when it is wet.
Activity:
Identify what property of matter is involved in the
following situations. Determine if the property is
physical of chemical.
h. The students easily cracked the shell of the eggs
that they will use for their dough.
Assignment:
1. Give 5 examples for each:
a. Physical Change
b. Chemical Change
2. Bring the following for the Lab. Activity tomorrow:
a. Lab. Gown and hairnet (individual)
b. Lab. Kit (shoe box, rags, masking tape, scissors, alcohol, tissue)
c. Baking soda
d. Vinegar (bottled; small amount only)
e. Chalk
Good bye
and
God bless you all!
