Developing the Publishing Workforce: Equip Conference 2013

The Equip (Equality in Publishing) project and the Department of Creative
Practice and Enterprise at City University London welcome submissions for a
one-day conference on 8 May 2013 on the theme of Developing the
Publishing Workforce.

The first annual Equip conference will include presentations and panel
discussions by publishing practitioners, expert bodies, analysts and scholars
addressing the broad theme of how to develop the publishing workforce to
meet the industry’s current and future needs. Bobby Nayyar and Mary Ann
Kernan of Equip and City University London will also present the findings of
Equip’s research projects in 2012–13, funded by Arts Council England,
relating to workforce diversity in the industry and the Publishing Equalities
Charter, launched in November 2012.

We invite conference contributions relating to the theme, focused either on
the publishing industry or other creative industries. Some of the suggested
topics are:

   •   Case studies of current workforce development and recruitment
       practices
   •   The changing skill needs of the publishing industry
   •   Reviews of diversity or equality initiatives within publishing or
       associated creative industries
   •   Internship programmes, their effects, and the outcomes for interns
   •   Current digital-enabled developments in publishing practices

Please submit with the following information to Bobby.Nayyar.1@city.ac.uk
by Friday 22 March 2013:

       Outline: a maximum of 1000 words, A4, single spaced, 11 point font

       Your outline should include:
          • Presentation title
          • Your name, Job title and email contact
          • The focus, aims and objectives of the presentation
          • The practice or research evidence base that will inform your
             presentation
          • How the presentation will contribute to the conference theme

       Deadline: Friday 22 March 2013
       Notification of acceptance: Friday 12 April 2013

Conference venue
The event will be housed in the heart of the City of London, in the top-rated
facilities of City University London’s School of Arts and Social Sciences
(http://goo.gl/maps/m1qiy). Registration will take place outside the Oliver
Thompson Lecture Theatre, Tait Building (accessible via the Main Reception
off Northampton Square).

Event schedule
The conference will begin at 10am and end at 6pm. It will be followed by a
networking event for Equip members.

Conference fee
Earlybird – £7
Students – £10
Equip Members – £11.25
Non Members – £25

Price includes refreshments and lunch.
