Globally more than 4 million cases of COVID-19 have been reported with daily increases. It is transmitted person-to-person via respiratory droplets or airborne particles, and has also been detected in stool, blood, and semen. COVID-19 has an incubation period of 14 days and symptoms range from mild to severe/critical illness and even death in around 2.3% of cases. Risk factors for severe illness include cardiovascular disease, diabetes, hypertension, chronic lung disease, cancer, chronic kidney disease, obesity, and smoking. Diagnosis is via RT-PCR testing of nasopharyngeal, oropharyngeal, or nasal swabs. Management is symptomatic and supportive care while antiviral drugs are under investigation.
