We wanted to know what migrants think about Finnish job markets and Finnish employees. So we asked!

Dialogi 2016 focuses on improving Finnish working life through embracing diversity. The mission of Dialogi programme is to improve Finnish working life through identifying trends and success factors and facilitating dialogue between operators.

  2. 2. We wanted to know what migrants think about Finnish job markets and Finnish employees…
  3. 3. So we asked The survey was conducted by phone interviews during 11.9-26.9.2015. We got responses from 402 migrants. The sample aimed at representing as the group of people whose residence permit is work based. 2/3 of respondents were working and 51 % of respondents had a Degree. The survey was conducted by Taloustutkimus.
  4. 4. of migrants report that they have had problems in finding a job.57 % Integration and finding a job matching experience and qualifications is seen difficult. “If a person knows how to work, he knows. That doesn’t depend on a nationality”

  6. 6. We especially lose the highly educated potential Of Masters & PhD’s report that they have had problems in finding a job 64% ! Of the same group think it’s easy to find a job matching experience and qualifications 22% “There are many talented people among immigrants that can bring added value to Finland” (survey)
  7. 7. Respondents think that many companies have too tight language requirements for Finnish language skills. 35% of respondents consider they can manage well with English and without speaking Finnish at their workplaces.
  8. 8. But after finding a job, most of the migrants are satisfied with their employment.

  12. 12. But there are also loads of positive things to say about Finland…
  13. 13. ”General atmosphere is free. When you get to know Finnish people, they are really nice and relaxed.” ”Good salary, good working conditions, not much bureacracy.” ”Nature and peacefulness. There is no bureaucracy in Finland. You can work and live in peace.” ”I am lucky that I can live in Finland. It is a peaceful country.” ”Finnish person is a good person. They will always help when a foreigner asks. But you have to go and ask. Finnish person is quite shy.”
  14. 14. Clearly Finnish employers haven’t fully realized the value of international knowhow and benefits of diversity.
