I. Clinical Care Competencies
Elizabeth is an extraordinarily diligent clinician. She is continually examining her patient’s status as it pertains to
established care goals and looking for deviations from the plan. Elizabeth is a voracious learner – she eagerly pursues
additional formal and informal learning opportunities and works to integrate new information into her clinical repertoire.
She has participated in outside exstrophy education, fellow SIMS and PICU electives. She also has been self-directed in
obtaining IV therapy and phlebotomy sign offs and completing her Vasoactive Titration packet.
Peer Comments:
- “She is ready to learn and easy to teach.”
- “I have often seen her looking up her patients vent settings to have a better understanding, and asking RT to help
her understand.”
- “Safety remains a priority for Elizabeth, and she is constantly checking things to ensure she is correct”
- “She asked very inquisitive questions about their conditions, cares, medications etc.”
- “She manages her time well between two critical patients.”
NURSE CLINICIAN I ~ Elizabeth Muia ~ 2015 Review
II. Problem Solving/Critical Thinking
Elizabeth is very comfortable utilizing others as a sounding board to assure thoughtful consideration of aspects of care.
She attends to her patients’ changing condition and follows up with any and all identified clinical concerns. With the
guidance of senior staff, Elizabeth is becoming increasingly competent in prioritizing issues and tasks. Her actions are
always governed by an attention to clinical policy. Elizabeth takes nothing for granted and is continually considering
emerging variables and how they may be related.
Peer Comments:
- “She works well with her peers, and can early on identify her needs to both them and I (when I am in charge).”
- “Elizabeth wants to have a complete understanding of what interventions she is providing the patient and why.”
- “As always, Elizabeth was excited to learn and have someone to bounce her questions off of.”
- “She will frequently ask advice or for help if she is presented with a new policy or procedure.”

I. Accountability/Personal Effectiveness
Elizabeth truly stands out as an exceptionally accountable individual. She bears the responsibility of her role heavily and
goes to lengths to assure that her practice is sound and continually improving. She is highly self-governing. Elizabeth
can be counted upon to do everything possible to meet the needs of her patients and the unit. She functions with integrity
and demonstrates a strong sense of ownership. Not only does Elizabeth reflect on her own performance, but she also
readily seeks out feedback from others and allows herself to be redirected when warranted. It means a lot to senior staff
to have someone so committed and willing to “do right.”
Peer Comments:
- “Elizabeth knows the importance of following policies and using resources and is not afraid to ask for help.”
- “Elizabeth always has the patient’s best interest at heart. She goes above and beyond for her patients at the
bedside.”
- “She wants the best for her patient and cares about them.”

she can be and it is obvious to her patients.”

Elizabeth is appreciated for her consistently team minded approach. She is highly sensitive to the needs of others and
initiates action or dialogue to ameliorate concerns. She is naturally compassionate and has an embedded proclivity
towards including families in her care. She is a dedicated and tireless advocate and always aims to represent the needs
of her patients and their families. Beyond that, she goes the extra mile to help her peers. Elizabeth is considerate and
wonderfully supportive. She recognizes the contributions of others and makes others feel good about their work.

to my rescue in the past and acts like it was her privilege.”
- “I really enjoy working with Elizabeth!”
- “I was genuinely impressed with Elizabeth as my buddy. She was VERY helpful throughout my busy shifts! She got
me supplies, helped with my bed/baths, glucoses, tubing change, and was just consistently checking in to make
sure I didn't need help. Anytime one of my monitors beeped she was right there when I couldn't be, and there to
assist if needed.”

III. Communication
Elizabeth communicates well within the team. She comprehensively keeps all relevant parties informed and encourages
free flow of information. She speaks articulately and with great care. Elizabeth is steadfastly professional and respectful

situations. Elizabeth gives a detailed and accurate report and her documentation is complete and in accordance with
guidelines.
Peer Comments:
- “Elizabeth communicates with all members of the medical team and patients/families.”

think when you are new it is easy to lose some compassion/empathy when focusing too much on skills and tasks,
and this is not the case with Elizabeth.”
- “She is so open to feedback, especially real time lessons!”
- “Elizabeth communicates well with the interdisciplinary team. She notifies the physicians and charge nurses with
changes in a patients condition. I have witnessed her having a discussion with the fellows to better understand her
patients plan of care.”
