Health Care Informatics
Professionals who understand the relationship between data,
information technology and the health care system are in
great demand. The U.S. National Library of Medicine defines
health informatics as the “interdisciplinary study of the
design, development, adoption and application of information
technology-based innovations in health care services delivery,
management, and planning.”
Lipscomb’s health care informatics program is an
interdisciplinary graduate degree and certificate designed to
provide the knowledge and skills needed to enhance quality,
safety, efficiency and patient-centric health care delivery
and outcomes through the utilization of data, information,
knowledge and technology.
• The number of health informatics jobs is increasing rapidly
and these positions often require advanced training, education
and expertise.
• Since 2007, postings for health informatics jobs have increased
10 times more rapidly than other health care positions overall.
(Burning Glass Technologies)
• The ideal student has a passion for understanding how data,
information and technology can be used to change and enhance
health care delivery and outcomes.
• Multidisciplinary training provides the ability to communicate
effectively with clinicians, administrators, business leaders and
IT professionals and the ability to understand the challenges
of each role.
• Time frame for the programs:
• MHCI completed in 14 months
• Certificate in HCI completed in five months
• Pharm.D./MHCI dual degree completed in four years
• This degree prepares one for jobs in hospitals, health care
consulting, pharmaceutical and biotech companies, corporate

Our time is on your side.
View the latest calendar for our health care informatics master’s
program and the dual degree (Pharm.D./MHCI) at our website.
Classes are scheduled on alternating weekends on Friday evenings
(4-8 p.m. or 5-9 p.m.) and Saturdays (8 a.m.-5 p.m.), allowing
the highest quality educational experience without disrupting
one’s professional career or one’s time in pharmacy school.
“The master’s courses do a great job bridging
the gap between the clinical, technical and
business applications to prepare you for any
environment in the health care field. This
program was critical in helping me secure a
position in pharmacy informatics.”
– Drew Lewis, Pharm.D.
HCI Certificate
“The informatics certificate program has
provided an invaluable advantage in that I
am able to create, implement and participate
in a wide array of projects that would
simply be beyond my scope of expertise
without this training. Integrating health care
technology can improve patient outcomes,
and it is the future of pharmacy practice.”
– Savannah Roberts, Pharm.D.

5. Earn Your Dual Degree or
Degree/Certificate
Dual Degree—Doctor of Pharmacy/Master
of Science in Health Care Informatics
The Pharm.D./MHCI program is a comprehensive dual
degree program which enhances pharmacy education with the
development of competencies and skills in the utilization and
integration of data, information, knowledge, technology and
automation to enhance health care delivery outcomes. Lipscomb
College of Pharmacy is only the second in the nation to offer
this unique program.
The dual Pharm.D./MHCI degree will be awarded to a student
who completes the 155 hours of the Pharm.D. program
along with the additional 27 hours of graduate credits in
health informatics. Select courses in the Doctor of Pharmacy
curriculum are required courses and will apply toward the dual
degree. Students enrolled in the dual Pharm.D./MHCI will
earn both the Doctor of Pharmacy and the Master of Science in
Health Care Informatics degrees at the completion of required
course work. Students will complete an application for both the
Pharm.D. and MHCI.The two programs will run concurrently.
Note: College of Pharmacy students participating in a dual degree program must
adhere to the admissions and academic policies of each graduate program that are
consistent with policies for dual degree programs. For additional information see
the Graduate Catalog, General Academic Policies, Dual Degree Programs.

pharmacist?
• An MHCI degree distinguishes you and will enhance your
chances to secure employment, residencies and fellowships.
• Salaries for graduates from this dual degree program exceed
those in the top of the market for health care professionals.
• Health care informatics is foundational to any career in pharmacy.
