Film Magazine and Poster Analysis

  1. 1. Film Magazine and Poster Survey Results Eleni Papaioannou
  2. 2. Yes No Have you ever gone to see a film after reading about it in a film magazine? Have you ever gone to see a film after seeing a film poster? Yes No I asked these two questions to find out what appeals more to a general audience. As you can see a lot more people said that they had been persuaded to see a film from a poster rather than a film magazine. This could be because film posters are free to look at as you don’t have to buy a full copy of a magazine. Therefore, I should pay close attention to my film poster as this is what is most likely to appeal to audiences.
  3. 3. What should catch your eye first when looking at the front cover of a film magazine? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 16 The Main Image The Colour Scheme The Layout The Main Headline The Name of the Magazine What should catch your eye first when looking at a film poster? 0 2 4 6 8 10 12 14 The Main Image The Name of the Film The Main Headline The Actors The Layout This data tells me what the general public think should be the most eye catching part of the magazine or film poster. 15/40 and 13/40 people said they think the main image should be the most eye catching part. For a film magazine a lot of people said that the colour scheme should catch their attention whereas for a film poster the name of the film seemed to be a popular choice. I think it would be wise for me to refer back to this information when I come to thinking about what I should and shouldn’t include on my film poster and magazine front cover.
  4. 4. What font style do you find most appealing on a film magazine? What font style do you find most appealing on a film poster? Serif Sans Serif A mixture of both Serif Sans Serif A mixture of both I asked this question so that I could see what font style is more suitable with each media text. For both the magazine and the film poster, sans serif seemed to be the most popular font style. This is most likely because it is easily legible font which is a necessity for a magazine and film poster. It is a necessity more so for the film poster as there tends to not be a lot of writing on the poster so the writing that is there needs to be able to be read quickly and easily by its audience.
  5. 5. What colours would you expect to find on a thriller film magazine? What colours would you expect to find on a thriller film poster? Blacks Reds Pinks Greys Whites Yellow Blues Blacks Reds Pinks Greys Whites Yellow Blues Overall, the colours that the public expected to find on thriller film posters and magazines were as expected with the colours red and black appearing most prominently. Another colour that seemed to be quite popular was blue. This is a colour that I have seen appear prominently in a few of the film posters and magazines that I have analysed in past research. This shows not only that it is a popular colour choice with audiences but it is also conventional of psychological thriller film posters and magazines.
