Multiculturalism ( Malveaux ) • Coming from democratic perspective • Multiculturalism is a philosophy or ideology that recognizes the personal worth and dignity of every individual regardless of culture, ethnicity, race, religion, gender, or national origin. • In many respects, multiculturalism has evolved as a response to the immigration brought about by globalization. • Multiculturalism is concerned with the impact of immigration on society and with the ways in which co- cultures interact with the dominant culture and with each other.

Immigration, indicate: ( Buffee ) • Leads to formation of co-cultures within a society. • There are some universal societal values, there also are unique values that generally are share only within culture and co-cultures. • Co-cultures should be seen as a system of values, attitudes, modes of behavior, and lifestyles of a social group that is distinct from related to dominant culture.

Point of solutions ( Singh ) • Educational system must change to meet the challenges of multiculturalism. • Develop a primary goals of preparing student at all academic level to participate fully in the ever emerging global village. • These change are going to deeply affect how education is defined. • Every one deserves equal respect and equal opportunity for self –realization by virtue of their humanity and human potential as rational being.

Cultural diversity and education • Chinese philosopher Tehyi Hsieh said : “ The schools of the country are its future in miniature “. • Consequently, it is important that you understand and appreciate these schools, whether they be located in your community or elsewhere. • Culture which formal educational systems tend to teach many of the same things: literacy, mathematics, science, history, religion and so forth.

What cultural teach • By nature all men are alike, but by education widely different “. • This different is mainly due to the influence of culture on the world’s educational system. • There is no one curriculum, no matter what the method of education what is basic and universal in human experience and practice. • What is taught in a culture , therefore is crucial to the maintenance and perpetuation of that culture and usually is a major responsibility of the formal educational systems within a culture.
  7. 7. • The teaching of history is common in all cultures, but cultures emphasize their own history ( the industrial revolutions, mexican revolution, chinesse kingdom, confucian tradition, world war, japanesse history etc ).
  8. 8. How cultures teach • Provide knowledge about the nature of the culture • Helps you understand interpersonal relationship among students and between students and teachers • Helps you understand the importance a culture places on education.

Education in Multicultural Society Should be based on the following set of beliefs and assumptions : • Cultural differences have strength and value • Schools should be models for the expression of human right and respect for cultural differences • Social justice and equality for all people should be of paramount importance in the design and delivery of curricula • Attitudes and values necessary for the continuation of a democratic society can be promoted in school • Schooling can provide the knowledge ,disposition, and skills for the redistribution of power and income among diverse groups
