Grade 7 Traditional instruments of Luzon

2. Music instruments have been used for various purposes. It
is used to accompany songs and dances. In earlier times,
they were used as an accompaniment to dance or labor. But
in later civilization, instrumental music were used for fun
and entertainment. Latest musicological studies, following
the Hornbostel-Sachs classification divides instruments into
the following categories: Idiophones, aerophones,
Chordophones, membranophones.

3. Classification of instruments
according to Hornbostel-
Sachs System

4.  Hornbostel-Sachs is a system of musical
instruments classification devised by Erich
Moritz von Hornbostel, an Austrian
ethnomusicologist, and Cuts Sachs, a German
–born but American resident, and first
published in the Zeitschhrift fur Ethnology in
1914.

5. Idiophones
Sounds are produced from the substance
of the instruments itself (wood or metal)
are classified as idiophones. They are
further subdivided into those that are
struck, scraped, plucked, shaken, or
rubbed. In the Philippines, there are metal
and woods principally bamboo
idiophones.

6. Membranophones
Sounds are produced by beating
or thumping the head/s of the
drum which are made from animal
skin (snake, deer, or goat). These
drums may be beaten with sticks
or by the palm portion or bare

7. Aerophones
Sounds are produced by
blowing the instruments.
These are mostly end-blown
with the air stream directed
into the open end of the tube.

8. Chordophones
Sounds are produced by
striking, plucking or bowing
the bamboo or wood stringed
instruments. They included
Zithers, lutes, bowed strings.

9. Different Musical Instruments of
Luzon
Gangsa
- Are handmade by the Kalinga tribe
in the Cordillera mountain range.
They are used in traditional dances
and to summon the gods for good
fortune.

10. Bunkaka
- Also known as ‘bilbil’. This is a
bamboo tube that is open on both
sides that produces a buzzing
sound when struck against the
palm. It is used by the Tingians and
Benguet Igorots.

11. Sulibaw
- Sulibaw is the drum of
the Ibaloi Igorots. The
stretched membrane of
an animal skin is used as
sound source.

12. Ludag
- Apayao uses Ludag as their drums.
Diwdiw-as
- Is a pan pipe instrument used by tingians of
Abra. Rarely used today is the bamboo
pinepipes called diwas , diwdiwas , or diw-diw
. These consist of a number of a bamboo
pipes (5-8)strung together.

13. Kalutang
- Kaluntang is one of oldest indigenous
Filipino instrument. It is commonly found
in tagalog region. These are pieces of
wood, usually from kamagong tree, used
by indigenous to signal that someone is
coming, something is happening or
meeting/ gathering is being called.

14. Tambuli
- Tambuli is an indigenous Philippine musical
instrument, somewhat like trumpet, made from
carabao horn. It played a major role in
communicating messages to early Philippine
villagers. When the meeting was to be held for
example, someone will blow a tambuli to
summon the meeting participants

15. Pas-ing
- Pas-ing is a guitar made from
bamboo. A segment of bamboo is cut
to include its two node. Its two cords
are slit from the bamboo itself and
raised by a bridge to produced tension.
It is played by picking the cords with
the fingers or striking with a stick.
