I was born on April 26th, 1980 in Chicago to Maudie and Richard Garrett at Cook County Hospital. My life started out hard in the beginning. My mother experienced a coma during my delivery, and this had a profound effect on me as a newborn, due to the fact I had to go live with my maternal grandmother for nine months and didn’t recognize her when she later came out of the coma, which left me wanting my grandmother all the time, whom I thought was my mother. I was the second born of seven children. Growing up early on Chicago’s South Side, I realized that two different worlds existed. One up North where the streets were clean and everyone seemed happy and the other on the South where poverty was prevalent and wide spread. This didn’t effect me as it did most kids my age because I knew no one was better than the anyone else. I enjoyed going to the park and playing with the other kids in the neighborhood. This gave me a great sense of community and pride. It wasn’t before long when my parents decided it was time for change. By this time my family had grown to three, with the addition of my sister. So my father finished getting his CDL and decided to move to Madison, Wisconsin to find a better opportunity in life. So we moved.
In 1985 my family packed up and moved to Madison. Early on I cried a lot, due to the fact I really missed my neighborhood in Chicago, plus all the rest of my family were still there. I kind of resented my parents for moving, but I got over it quick. It was a culture shock at first, to come from the hustle and bustle of the third largest city in the U.S. to a town of less than 50,000 was weird. Add in the fact that African Americans made up only about 8 percent of the populace was hard getting used to. I started Kindergarten around this time as well and I would most times be either the only or one of a few African Americans in the class. I met a lot of new people as well.
The most fun period of my life. As with most of you, I was your typical teenage boy, I played football and baseball, was part of many activities. But the greatest experience I received in high school, is the amount of lifelong friendships that have withstood the test of my lifetime. I value friendship as one of my most gratifying qualities. We all can attest to this when I say that you will get friends for life during this period. This was also the period in which I got in the most trouble from both inside and outside the house. Many people understand this because they have been through it. I graduated in 1998 from Memorial High School, this was one of my most proud moments, because not only was I done with school at that time, but it also meant I would be moving out of my parents house soon, which brings us to the next chapter.
After high school, and once I moved out of my parents house. I went through many jobs during this time from cook to mailroom worker to factory worker. But I could never settle on something. I don’t know what it was, but I was very unsatisfied with the way my life was going. I eventually chose to go to college, but after two semesters, I ended up dropping out. That’s when I began to smoke a lot of pot, amongst other things young adults sometimes do. And I found that education was secondary to my interests of partying all night and sleeping all day. I eventually lost my job and almost my apartment. I eventually ended up at my grandma’s house. During this time my life changed. I was 24 years old, when I met my wife Colleen, she was so beautiful to me, I had to have her. Later on we moved in together and eventually had 4 Children, Kya, Kaleelah, Junior, and Charlee. Being a father is the greatest gift in life. Colleen and I are to be married next year.
I graduated in 2010 with an associates degree in Information Technology, at the age of thirty . As a father of four, I spend a lot of time raising my children, which doesn’t leave me much time for anything else. I am employed at AT&T as a line technician, specializing in VDSL and VoIP with twisted copper pair. I enjoy my job, but in the end its just a stepping stone for me, as I plan to use my Media Business degree to enhance my career with AT&T. I'm expected to graduate in early 2013 with my bachelors, this will be a crowning achievement because I will be my parents first child with a degree. I have been truly blessed and really love all the opportunities I've been given in my life. I end this Introduction of myself with a God Bless and may you achieve all you can in your life.
