PROJECT CARS: THE NEW
STANDARD FOR RACING SIMS
2. What’s this all about?
Project CARS is a recently released racing video game
developed by Slightly Mad Studios. The game aims to deliver a
realistic driving experience for gamers, and has received a warm
welcome after many games of its kind have failed.
‘CARS’ in the game title actually stands for ‘Community Assisted
Racing Simulator’; the game has been funded by donations from
racing fans rather than a wealthy publisher.
Naturally, the game has been made on a small budget of only 5
million.
3. Gameplay
Project CARS, while maintaining the classic driving simulation
experience, has done a lot to make it stand out from the crowd.
It gives players access to many motorsport paths and all the
vehicles and racing tracks right from the start of the game.
While it is exciting to begin with, the lack of unlockable items or
monetary objectives do make the game a bit boring, as there
are no tangible achievements for the player.
4. Gameplay
There are many different types of races a player can take part in.
These vary from shakedowns to qualifying races to cup finals;
some races can even go on for days, like big tournaments in real
life.
The game offers a total of 70 cars which can be raced on more
than 100 different tracks in 30 unique locations around the world.
Only 23 of the tracks are inspired by world championship tracks
from the real world, and the rest are fictitious. It also features two
point-to-point tracks, based on real roads.
5. Graphics and sound
For a crowd funded game, the visuals are surprisingly good. Even
the sound effects are decent, making for a worthwhile playing
experience.
The game features a variety of camera angles, with the most
impressive being the ones showing the interior of the car.
6. Verdict
Project CARS is definitely a refreshing experience for racing game
fans. As big names such as Grand Turismo become more
redundant, gaming community seeks something different. It is
certainly worth a spin.
